| | | OTTAWA: LAST SEASON: 37-31-14, 88 points, finished 11th in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Paul MacLean, fourth season with Ottawa, 102-79-30.
ADDED: RW Alex Chiasson, C David Legwand.
LOST: RW Alex Hemsky, C Jason Spezza.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Bobby Ryan. The right winger is in the final year of a five-year, $25.5 million deal, and according to general manager Bryan Murray has decided to wait before determining whether to re-sign. Murray noted the sides will talk ''in October or November to get something done.''
OUTLOOK: It was only 2012 and 2013 when many thought Ottawa was a franchise on the ascent after back-to-back playoff appearances. Now the Senators are facing an uncertain future as Ottawa lost centers Daniel Alfredsson and Spezza the last two offseasons. There is a very real possibility the organization may have to deal Ryan and Methot during the season if the players cannot come to terms with the team. It is not a playoff formula. | | ANAHEIM: LAST SEASON: 54-20-8, 116 points. Won Pacific Division. Lost to Los Angeles in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Bruce Boudreau, 4th season with Ducks, 111-55-22; 8th overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Ryan Kesler, C Nate Thompson, D Clayton Stoner, LW Dany Heatley.
LOST: G Jonas Hiller, RW Teemu Selanne, C Saku Koivu, C Nick Bonino, C Mathieu Perreault, C Daniel Winnik, D Luca Sbisa, D Stephane Robidas.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Devante Smith-Pelly. After bouncing between the NHL and the minors for three years, the speedy, tough-nosed right wing is poised to build on his breakthrough effort as Anaheim's top goal-scorer in the postseason. He's likely to get a chance to contribute on the deep Ducks' top three lines.
OUTLOOK: Kesler and Thompson make the Ducks tougher down the middle, and this deep, balanced club should be in position to contend for the Stanley Cup again. Anaheim is taking its biggest risk in net, hoping Frederik Andersen and prospect John Gibson are ready for full-time NHL duty. |

*Senators-Ducks Preview* ========================
By TOM CASTRO STATS Senior Editor
Ottawa (24-23-10) at Anaheim (38-16-7), 10:00 p.m. EDT
The Anaheim Ducks are back on track after a rough stretch and pushing for the top spot in the Western Conference.
They'll look to keep the pressure on as they try for their fourth straight win Wednesday night against the Ottawa Senators, who have also gotten hot and routed the Ducks in the first meeting of the season.
Anaheim (38-16-7) has put a 1-4-1 stretch behind it with its three consecutive victories, rallying to beat Detroit 4-3 in a shootout at home Monday.
Outshot 22-10 through the first 40 minutes, the Ducks stayed focused and scored three times in a 3:40 span of the third period.
"We learned our lesson in terms of times during the season when we've gone down two or three and lost our composure and taken penalties trying to win the game in five minutes," center Andrew Cogliano told the team's official website after delivering Anaheim's first goal of the spurt.
"I thought tonight we stuck to the game plan and kept forcing them, putting more pressure on them. You get one and you start feeling good, the crowd gets into it and you get a couple more."
The Ducks registered 14 shots in the third.
"A lot of times this year, you get down two like that and all of a sudden things unravel and you're down three and we're getting mad," coach Bruce Boudreau told the team's website. "We stayed within striking distance of a team that was outplaying us the first two periods."
Anaheim is in second place in the West, a handful of points behind Nashville. The Ducks' win streak has been powered by a resurgent attack, as they've scored 11 non-shootout goals after managing 13 in the previous six.
Defenseman Francois Beauchemin scored for the third straight game Monday.
Anaheim will be facing an Ottawa team that's gone 4-1-1 in its last six as it opens a five-game road trip. The Senators have totaled 15 goals in their past three victories.
Ottawa (24-23-10) defeated Florida 4-1 on Saturday as Kyle Turris had a goal and two assists to help Ottawa win consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 29 and Jan. 3. It hasn't won three in a row since a four-game run Oct. 11-18.
The push has likely come too late for the Senators to make the playoffs, as they'll need to pass four teams to capture the second wild-card spot in the East.
"It's another step forward," Andrew Hammond told the team's website after making 21 saves to win for the second time in as many NHL starts. "We're obviously still a little ways to go for the playoff (spot), but I think the last two games have helped us, and you can't really count yourselves out until you're mathematically eliminated."
Ottawa routed Anaheim 6-2 on Dec. 19 as Mike Hoffman scored twice, Turris had a goal and an assist and ex-Duck Bobby Ryan - who ended a seven-game goal drought Saturday - added two assists.
That snapped the Senators' four-game losing streak in the series.
Ryan Getzlaf scored both Anaheim goals in the game to give him six and six assists in a seven-game point streak against Ottawa.
Turris has recorded four goals and five assists in his past six games, Erik Karlsson has two goals and eight assists in six and Milan Michalek has three goals and four assists in four.
The Ducks acquired rookie forward Jiri Sekac from Montreal for forward Devante Smith-Pelly on Tuesday. Sekac has seven goals and nine assists in 50 games this season.
