| | | PITTSBURGH: LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Won Metropolitan Division. Lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike Johnston (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: D Christian Ehrhoff, F Patric Hornqvist, C Nick Spaling, F Blake Comeau, G Thomas Greiss.
LOST: F James Neal, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sidney Crosby. Sid ''the Kid'' isn't so young anymore. It's been nearly a decade since he arrived in Pittsburgh and helped rescue a floundering franchise. He rolled to his second MVP Award in 2013-14 after racking 36 goals and 68 assists for a league-leading 146 points. A wrist injury slowed him in the postseason. He scored just once in 13 playoff games.
OUTLOOK: New coach, new general manager but same old expectations in Pittsburgh. It's been more than five years since they lifted the Stanley Cup, a drought that cost former coach Dan Bylsma his job. Johnston brings in a more structured philosophy. There may be growing pains early, but if Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy, the Penguins will again be a threat to make a deep playoff run. | | NEW JERSEY: LAST SEASON: 35-29-18, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Peter DeBoer, 4th season with Devils (102-76-34); 7th overall in NHL (205-183-70).
ADDED: LW Mike Cammalleri, LW Martin Havlat, C Scott Gomez, G Scott Clemmensen.
LOST: G Martin Brodeur, D Anton Volchenkov, D Mark Fayne.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaromir Jagr. Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 43 assists in remarkable season in which he played in all 82. Can he do it again at 42-years-old. If he does, the Devils have a shot at getting back into the playoffs for the first time since reaching NHL Finals in 2011-12.
OUTLOOK: After finishing with fourth fewest goals in the league, the Devils hope free-agent signees Cammalleri (26 goals) and Havlat (12 goals in 48 games) can boost the scoring, along with Adam Henrique, who scored a career-high 25-goals last season. With Broduer not re-signed, Cory Schnedier will get most of the work in goal after posting a 1.97 goals against average in 46 games last season. Defense allowed 208 goals, ninth best in the league. |

*Penguins-Devils Preview* =========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Pittsburgh (22-8-5) at New Jersey (12-18-7), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Patric Hornqvist has joined the growing list of injured or sick Pittsburgh Penguins, and those issues are finally catching up to the Eastern Conference leaders.
Sidney Crosby will try to shake out of his funk and help the Penguins avoid their longest slide in nearly three years Monday night against the struggling New Jersey Devils.
Pittsburgh (22-8-5) is atop the East with 49 points despite a growing list of players who are either hurt or infected with mumps. However, the Penguins have lost three straight and are coming off Saturday's 3-0 defeat to visiting Washington.
They haven't endured a longer skid since a six-game losing streak from Dec. 29, 2011-Jan. 11, 2012, and they won't have Hornqvist available to help them avoid getting closer to that dubious mark.
Hornqvist, who is third on the team with 29 points, suffered a lower-body injury in the first period and is expected to be out "a few weeks," according to coach Mike Johnston.
The veteran forward is the 12th Penguin currently out.
"It's a bad loss (losing) 'Horny,'" center Evgeni Malkin told the team's official website. "Of course it's a tough time right now, every game we lose a couple guys, but we still have a good team ... we just (need to) show how we can play."
That's certainly true for Crosby, who has two points in five games after missing three with mumps earlier this month. The superstar center has one goal on 37 shots in his last 12 games, and was a minus-3 against the Capitals.
"You've got to trust that the puck will go in the net, so I don't think that really solves anything getting frustrated," Crosby said. "It probably makes things worse, so you just got to make sure you go out there and compete and give yourself a chance.
"You've just got to make sure you keep fighting and go to the right spot. You can't allow bad habits to creep in to change much. Chances are there so eventually they'll go in."
Crosby hasn't scored in six games at New Jersey (12-18-7), and Marc-Andre Fleury is 1-8-1 with a 3.28 goals-against average in his last 10 games there.
The Penguins, though, have won both meetings this season - both at home - and Fleury made 29 saves in the most recent, a 1-0 victory Dec. 2.
Malkin has a goal in each of those games, but he only has three points in his last nine games in New Jersey.
The Devils have dropped eight of nine (1-5-3), a stretch that cost coach Peter DeBoer his job. He was replaced by the coaching trio of general manager Lou Lamoriello, Scott Stevens (defense) and Adam Oates (forwards), with the first game under the new staff resulting in a 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Saturday.
"It was interesting - watching, listening, and seeing what was transpiring," Lamoriello said. "I thought it was extremely positive. The bench was extremely alive. We were not overly frustrated.
"There were some changes made within a 24-hour period, so we knew there would be a few breakdowns. Overall we have to build off what we saw."
The top priority for the new coaches will be getting offense from a team that ranks 28th in the league with 2.08 goals per game. The Devils have scored three goals or fewer in 11 consecutive contests, totaling 15 during that span.
Adam Henrique and Jaromir Jagr lead New Jersey with 20 points each, but they've combined for seven and a minus-14 in the past nine games.
