PLAYER TO WATCH: Rick Nash. The top forward will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing postseason in which the 2002 No. 1 draft notched only three goals and 10 points in 25 games and heard boos from the crowd. The 30-year-old left wing has come to training camp looking thinner and fitter as he heads into his third season with the Rangers. Nash has four seasons left for big money on his current contract, so there is plenty of time for him to win over the Madison Square Garden faithful.
OUTLOOK: The Rangers will go as far as goalie Henrik Lundqvist, ''The King,'' will take them. The team has undergone major changes since the run to the finals, but with the strong core of returning veterans such as Nash, Martin St. Louis, and defensemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh, fortified by newcomers Dan Boyle, Lee Stempniak and Ryan Malone, New York could again be a tough out in the playoffs. A new captain is expected to be announced at the start of the season to replace the trio of alternate captains that took leadership roles after former captain Ryan Callahan was traded to Tampa Bay late last season for St. Louis. | | DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 40-31-11, 91 points, 5th Central Division. PLAYER TO WATCH: Jamie Benn. In his first season as the Stars captain, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked eighth in the NHL with 79 points and ninth with 34 goals. Both were career highs, as was his plus-21 rating. Benn has increasingly accepted his role as a leader on a team filled with plenty of 20-something players, and is part of a dynamic scoring line with Tyler Seguin.
OUTLOOK: With the experience of a hard-fought first-round series in their first season under veteran Ruff, the Stars expect to do more than just make the playoffs this time around. That is a reasonable goal with their added scoring punch. With Benn and Seguin on the front line, the Stars will have another line with 31-year-old former Ottawa teammates Spezza and Hemsky likely together. |

The New York Rangers have a good chance to keep their streak going with a trio of games against average opponents before they embark on a tough Western trip.
However, that stretch begins against a Dallas Stars club whose recent play certainly belies their low position in the Western Conference standings.
The Rangers look to win a ninth straight game for the first time in over 41 years Monday night against the Stars, who have won five of their last six.
Derek Stepan recorded a hat trick Saturday to lead New York (19-10-4) to a 3-1 win over New Jersey, marking the team's first eight-game streak since Dec. 27, 1974-Jan. 11, 1975. The Rangers haven't won nine in a row since setting a franchise record with a 10-game run Jan. 19-Feb. 10, 1973.
The victory came in goaltender Henrik Lundqvist's 600th career game and was New York's second consecutive hat trick after Rick Nash's three-goal night against Washington on Tuesday. The Rangers last had back-to-back tricks Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, 1994.
"I think we believe in each other a lot right now, we believe in the system and the way we are playing," Lundqvist told the Rangers' official website. "We've gained a lot of confidence because the way we are playing and because we are winning."
Lundqvist stopped 19 shots while tying a career best with his seventh straight win and became only the ninth goalie to play 600 games with one franchise. He still trails Mike Richter (666) for career games played with New York.
The 325-game winner has been lights out during his streak, allowing 11 goals on 184 shots in that span and also earning his fifth shutout of the season Dec. 14 at Edmonton.
The Rangers, who are tied with the Capitals with 42 points, improved to 11-2-1 against the Metropolitan Division, though they still trail Pittsburgh (49) and the Islanders (47) in the standings. Their 84 goals allowed are tied for second-fewest in the East.
New York has won four of its last five meetings with the Stars (15-14-5), and while this stretch also features a visit to Florida and a home game against Buffalo - both sitting in the lower half of the Atlantic - the Panthers have won four of their last five.
Continuing to play well through those contests will go a long way toward helping the Rangers get ready for an upcoming three-game trip that features NHL-leading Anaheim, a Stanley Cup finals rematch with defending champion Los Angeles and a visit to San Jose.
"We have to continue here and push ourselves," Lundqvist said. "When you're hot and you're on a roll, you want to try to cash in as much as possible."
Dallas bounced back from being shut out for the only time this season at home against Toronto on Tuesday with a 4-3 win at St. Louis on Saturday.
Power-play goals by Trevor Daley and Jason Demers in the second period gave the Stars a 4-2 lead and helped them beat a Central opponent for the first time.
Dallas is a paltry 1-7-3 in divisional games.
"We need wins, we need points. That's what we're looking at," Daley said. "It doesn't matter who it's against. We need them."
The Stars haven't gotten much past Lundqvist in recent years, losing four of five meetings with the star goaltender allowing nine goals on 154 shots in those contests.
"It's a good test for us," coach Lindy Ruff told the Stars' official site. "They haven't been giving up a lot. They've been playing good hockey."
