KEY GAME INFORMATION
PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 42-30-10, 94 points. Finished 3rd in Metropolitan Division. Sixth in Eastern Conference. Lost to New York Rangers in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Craig Berube, 2nd season with Flyers (42-27-10); 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: C R.J. Umberger, LW Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, D Michael Del Zotto
LOST: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Steve Downie, LW Tye McGinn, C Kris Newbury, D Erik Gustafsson, D Bruno Gervais
PLAYER TO WATCH: Flyers center Claude Giroux. Back earlier than expected from an unspecified lower-body injury, Giroux needs to be in top form if the Flyers expect to play deep into the postseason. Giroux was selected last season as a Hart Trophy finalist, the league's MVP award. He matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race (86 points).
OUTLOOK: The Flyers need Steve Mason to play again like a true No. 1 goalie and for Giroux to play like an MVP candidate for the Flyers to have a shot at ending their Stanley Cup drought. The Flyers are 0 for the Cup since they won consecutive Cups in 1974 and 1975 and seemed poised to build a dynasty. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs (1966-67) have suffered longer than any other team that was won at least one Stanley Cup.
ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 37-30-15, 89 points. Ninth overall in Western Conference.
COACH: Dave Tippett, fifth season with Arizona, 156-96-42; In 10th NHL season as coach, 427-252-107.
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, C Joe Vitale, RW B.J. Crombeen, G Devan Dubnyk.
LOST: RW Radim Vrbata, C Mike Ribeiro, D Derek Morris, LW Paul Bissonnette, G Thomas Greiss.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Antoine Vermette. As Ribeiro struggled late last season, Vermette surged to the forefront as Arizona's top center. He led the Coyotes with 24 goals last season and is a superb two-way player - a perfect fit for Tippett's defense-first system. A bigger season could be on the horizon as the Coyotes lean on him more.
OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Arizona lost captain Shane Doan for 12 games due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and goalie Mike Smith was out the final 10 games with a knee injury. Even with the injuries, the Coyotes finished two points out of the West's final playoff spot. Stay relatively healthy and get back to their defensive ways, they might be in the mix again this season.

*Flyers-Coyotes Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Philadelphia (14-15-6) at Arizona (13-18-4), 9:00 p.m. EDT

Devyn Dubnyk has been making the majority of the starts in goal for the Arizona Coyotes lately, helping them become more competitive.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Flyers continue to struggle to kill penalties, especially away from home.

Arizona looks for its third straight win Monday night versus Philadelphia.

The Coyotes (13-18-4) had dropped 10 of 12 while surrendering 45 goals but have limited opponents to one goal in each of their back-to-back wins. Dubnyk stopped 61 shots while starting both.

They knocked off the league's best team with a 2-1 shootout win at home against Anaheim on Saturday, marking their first consecutive victories since Nov. 14-16. Shane Doan scored the tiebreaker's only goal despite breaking his stick on the shot.

"It's better than the seven the game before that," Doan said, referencing a 7-1 loss at Vancouver on Dec. 22. "We've got a long ways to go, but obviously two in a row is big and if we can find a way to win the next game, that's all we're focusing on."

Dubnyk, who started for the fifth time in six games, helped Arizona hang on for a shootout despite being outshot 17-8 in the third period and 36-29 overall. He is 8-3-2 with a 2.52 goals-against average while Mike Smith has disappointed with a 5-15-2 record and 3.48 GAA.

"You gotta enjoy each game and enjoy the wins and realize what we have to do to get on a streak here," Dubnyk said.

Monday's starter has yet to be announced, though Smith could be on the bench again given his 5.39 GAA during a six-start losing streak versus Philadelphia.

The Flyers (14-15-6) scored 16 goals while opening a season-high eight-game trip with three victories but lost 4-1 Saturday in Nashville. They gave up three power-play goals on five chances against a unit that had scored an NHL-worst two goals in 48 opportunities on the man advantage at home.

Philadelphia owns one of the league's worst penalty kills, stifling just 74.4 percent of its opponents opportunities. The team has been especially poor on the road, giving up 22 goals on 67 chances.

The Flyers were also empty-handed on four power-play opportunities of their own, including a 5-on-3 advantage for 58 seconds in the second period. They fell to 0 for 13 over the last five games after scoring exactly one power-play goal in eight straight.

"I thought we had a good 5-on-5 game," coach Craig Berube told the team's official website. "Those kills in the second period couldn't get the job done, so it's something we've got to look at."

Claude Giroux scored his 12th goal and has four goals and three assists during a four-game point streak. He has scored a goal in each of his last two visits to Arizona.

Philadelphia has won three of the last four meetings, most recently taking a 5-3 road victory on Jan. 4 as Jakub Voracek had a goal and an assist.
