KEY GAME INFORMATION
CAROLINA: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, 83 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Bill Peters, 1st season with Hurricanes; 1st overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Brad Malone, D Tim Gleason.
LOST: C Manny Malhotra, G Justin Peters, C Brett Sutter.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season.
TAMPA BAY: LAST SEASON: 46-27-9, 101 points. Swept in first round of playoffs by Montreal.
COACH: Jon Cooper, second full season with Lighting, 51-35-12.
ADDED: F Brian Boyle, F Brenden Morrow, D Anton Stralman, D Jason Garrison, G Evgeni Nabokov, F Jonathan Drouin.
LOST: G Anders Lindback, F Ryan Malone, F Teddy Purcell, F Nate Thompson, D Sami Salo.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ondrej Palat. One of the NHL's top rookies last season. With Steven Stamkos missing a significant portion of the year and Martin St. Louis departing in a late-season trade, Palat finished with team-leading 50 points, including 23 goals. Third among league rookies in goals and second in points, he led all rookies with 44 points after Jan. 1.
OUTLOOK: With Bishop healthy again after missing the playoffs with a dislocated elbow, many expect the Lightning to prosper in the relatively weak Eastern Conference and make a deep run in the playoffs. Stamkos has scored more goals (210) than any player in the league since the start of the 2009-10 season and Bishop is coming off a season in which he set franchise season records for wins (37), save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.23).

*Hurricanes-Lightning Preview* ==============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Carolina (10-20-4) at Tampa Bay (21-11-4), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Tampa Bay Lightning got the offensive performance they were seeking for weeks just before the Christmas break. They could get some help at the other end of the ice in their first game back.

Tampa Bay's top goaltender Ben Bishop and defenseman Jason Garrison could return from lower-body injuries in Saturday night's visit from the potentially short-handed Carolina Hurricanes.

The Lightning (21-11-4) won for just the third time in nine games Tuesday with a 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh. Tyler Johnson recorded his second career hat trick while leading Tampa Bay to its most goals since a 5-0 win over Buffalo on Dec. 4.

The Lightning scored 16 times during a 2-5-1 stretch.

"It's awesome that we were able to get a win before the break," Johnson said. "We were in a little bit of a rut there. We weren't scoring goals. For us to get four on a good team like Pittsburgh is a big step for us."

Tampa Bay will next try to move in front of idle Montreal in the Atlantic Division by earning its fifth consecutive win over the Eastern Conference's last-place club and ninth in 10 meetings. The Lightning might get Bishop back from a lower-body injury for their second matchup this season with Carolina (10-20-4), and sent Andrei Vasilevskiy back to the minors Wednesday.

Bishop is 4-0-0 with a 1.24 goals-against average lifetime against the Hurricanes, but Tampa Bay started Evgeni Nabokov in a 2-1 home victory over Carolina on Dec. 11. Bishop was hurt four days later in a 4-2 loss in Pittsburgh, and Garrison hasn't played since a 3-1 loss at the New York Islanders last Saturday.

It's unclear, meanwhile, when Carolina will get Alexander Semin back from an upper-body injury. Semin, Jiri Tlusty (upper body) and Tim Gleason (undisclosed) are considered day-to-day while Andrej Nestrasil (upper body) and Jordan Staal (leg) are on injured reserve.

Semin was recently activated from the IR for a lower-body injury that sidelined him for two weeks until a 1-0 loss to the New York Rangers on Sunday. Gleason was forced to leave after a fight with New Jersey's Jordin Tootoo in a 2-1 shootout victory Tuesday, and Staal could make his season debut Monday against Montreal.

Carolina is 2-1-1 since a six-game skid despite totaling just 17 goals in its last 12 contests. Ron Hainsey deflected in the tying goal with 8:01 left in regulation and Chris Terry had the lone one in the shootout Tuesday to help the Hurricanes avoid a fifth consecutive road loss and give goaltender Anton Khudobin his first win in 11 starts this season.

"Each period we built on it, especially in the third when we were really hunting down pucks," Terry told the team's official website. "It's funny the way it went it. We had some grade-A chances, and then we get one off two shin pads. We're not complaining. We'll take them any way they come right now."

Nikita Kucherov scored two goals in the win over Carolina, including the tiebreaker with 30.3 seconds that deflected off Hainsey, kick-starting a personal seven-game stretch that's featured five goals and five assists. Kucherov has also scored three goals in his last games versus Carolina.

Johnson has five goals and three assists in his last five games, but he has just one assist in his past five against the Hurricanes.
