| | | BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 54-19-9, 117 points, most in the NHL. Lost to Montreal Canadiens in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien, eighth season in Boston (310-165-65); 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: F Simon Gagne, G Niklas Svedberg.
LOST: F Jarome Iginla, F Shawn Thornton, G Chad Johnson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Defenseman Zdeno Chara is 37, and it's not clear how long his 6-foot-9 body can hold up. He played in 77 games, but had the least time on the ice (in a non-lockout season) since his arrival in Boston in 2006, and his fewest points and penalty minutes as a Bruin, too. He finished the season with a broken finger. Still, he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, which he won in 2009.
OUTLOOK: After winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 and returning to the finals two seasons later, the Bruins posted the NHL's best record last season but were knocked out of the playoffs by the rival Canadiens in seven games in the second round. The Bruins return essentially the same team, including Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron and Vezina winner Tuukka Rask, who led the league with seven shutouts, finished second with a .930 save percentage and was fourth with a 2.03 goals-against average. | | COLUMBUS: LAST SEASON: 43-32-7, 93 points. Eliminated in first round of playoffs by Pittsburgh in 6 games.
COACH: Todd Richards, fourth season with the Blue Jackets, 85-70-16; 5th overall in NHL.
ADDED: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Jerry D'Amigo, RW Brian Gibbons.
LOST: LW R.J. Umberger, C Derek MacKenzie, RW Jack Skille.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Brandon Dubinsky. With two of the team's top centers unavailable (Ryan Johansen, holdout; Boone Jenner, broken hand), the fiery 28-year-old's role only grows bigger. He was already the heart and soul of a team that doesn't have an official captain, even though he would seem the likely choice. Coming off a year in which he had 16 goals and 34 assists and continually came up big late in games, he'll be counted on to provide even more points and leadership.
OUTLOOK: If the contract dispute between Johansen and the club isn't resolved soon, and with Jenner and Nathan Horton (bad back) out for the foreseeable future, the Blue Jackets may have to win a lot of 1-0 and 2-1 games in which G Sergei Bobrovsky stands on his head. Also, several young players (most likely Alexander Wennberg and Simon Hjalmarsson) may have to be gangbusters right from the outset to kill time until the club's at full strength. |

*Bruins-Blue Jackets Preview* =============================
Boston (18-14-3) at Columbus (14-16-3), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Boston Bruins' Milan Lucic may be forgiven if he isn't in the holiday spirit for his team's first game after the Christmas break on Saturday night in Columbus.
Lucic has a score to settle with Dalton Prout of the Blue Jackets for a punch he called "gutless" from the last time these teams met.
Boston (18-14-3) posted a 4-3 shootout victory at Columbus on Nov. 21 to extend its win streak in the series to seven with each game decided by one or two goals.
That contest featured an incident between Lucic and Prout at the end of overtime. It took one punch for Prout to drop Lucic, who said he didn't want to fight.
"I let him know that I wasn't going to fight him," Lucic said afterward. "I wasn't prepared and I let my guard down and that's what happens sometimes when you let your guard down."
Lucic - who received a game misconduct for carrying on after he was punched - said it was one of the hardest shots he has ever absorbed. He made it clear he was looking forward to the Bruins' next game with Columbus (14-16-3).
"I didn't like it. The good thing is we get to play him two more times," he said while grinning.
Prout and Lucic also fought each other in the clubs' previous meeting Nov. 30, 2013.
Boston averages 2.54 goals to rank 21st in the league. The Bruins, however, went into the break on the strength of scoring nine goals in wins over Buffalo on Sunday and Nashville on Tuesday.
"We know that we have to be better," winger Brad Marchand said. "It just seemed like every time you made a mistake, it ended up in our net and we couldn't score. The last couple of games we've showed some character."
Marchand and Loui Eriksson each scored twice in Tuesday's 5-3 win, with Eriksson posting his third multi-point effort in his last four games. Those two have combined for 19 goals to lead the Bruins.
Columbus had gone 8-0-1 this month before losing 5-1 at home to Nashville on Monday. The Blue Jackets have 31 points - nine out of the postseason.
"It was a good run, put us back in the middle of things, we've got a long ways to go," coach Todd Richards said. "Now we've got to start another streak. We've got 12 games leading up to the All-Star break."
Ryan Johansen's goal drought is at 10 games. He is second on the team with nine goals and tied with Nick Foligno for the club lead with 30 points.
Foligno is tied for sixth in the league with 16 goals - half coming on the power play to tie for second in the NHL.
Sergei Bobrovsky saved 26 of 30 shots after posting a 2.01 goals-against average over his previous nine starts.
Bobrovsky is 0-2-2 with a 2.43 GAA in four starts against Boston, the only club he has faced that he has yet to defeat.
His counterpart figures to be Tuukka Rask, who has registered a 1.26 GAA in winning his last three starts versus the Blue Jackets.
