KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: LAST SEASON: 46-21-15, 107 points. Finished third in Central Division, lost to Los Angeles Kings in Western Conference final.
COACH: Joel Quenneville, 7th season with the Blackhawks, 268-127-59; 18th in the NHL, 706-410-77-100.
ADDED: C Brad Richards, G Michael Leighton.
LOST: LW Brandon Bollig, D Sheldon Brookbank.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Brandon Saad. The talented winger was terrific in the final part of the playoff series against the Kings, collecting three goals and four assists in the last four games. Playing on a line with Patrick Kane and newcomer Brad Richards, he could do even better than his career highs of 19 goals and 28 assists from last season.
OUTLOOK: It's Stanley Cup or bust for the loaded Blackhawks, who have no glaring weaknesses. They should be among the league's highest-scoring teams again this season, and Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith leads a solid group of defensemen. The Central could be hockey's toughest division, but the Blackhawks are a legitimate threat for their third NHL title in the last six seasons.
COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. Won the Central Division. Lost to Minnesota 4-3 in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Patrick Roy, 2nd season with Colorado, 52-22-8; 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Jarome Iginla, D Brad Stuart, C Daniel Briere, C Jesse Winchester.
LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, F Paul Stastny, G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, D Andre Benoit, D Cory Sarich.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings.

*Blackhawks-Avalanche Preview* ==============================

By MATT BECKER STATS Editor

Chicago (23-10-2) at Colorado (13-13-8), 9:00 p.m. EDT

Following their worst performance of the season, the Chicago Blackhawks are eager to return to hockey.

The Colorado Avalanche are also ready to get back on the ice as they attempt to build on their best game of the season.

The visiting Blackhawks try to return to their dominant form Saturday night against an Avalanche team seeking a fourth straight victory.

Chicago (23-10-2) may have been caught looking ahead to the Christmas break with a listless performance in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to Winnipeg. The Blackhawks, who were 14-2-1 in their previous 17 and had won eight straight at home, were outshot 15-7 in the first period as the Jets chased Corey Crawford with three goals.

It was only the third time Chicago lost by more than one goal.

"All year long, I think we've been in every hockey game except for tonight," coach Joel Quenneville said. "We have three days to recover and get excited again."

The Avalanche (13-13-8) shouldn't have any problem being motivated to return to the rink after beating St. Louis 5-0 on Tuesday for a season-high third straight victory.

Colorado is 4-0-2 since Dec. 11 and has hit the five-goal mark twice in its last three games after scoring that many once in its previous 16.

"We have three nice days off," coach Patrick Roy said. "We gave ourselves a nice gift before Christmas - .500 hockey for the first time of the year. Now let's not look behind, let's look ahead and be ready for Chicago. It will be another good test."

Semyon Varlamov gave the Avalanche a big lift by stopping 26 shots in his return after missing six straight games with a groin injury.

Although Varlamov is 4-0-0 with a 1.59 goals-against average in five games against the Blackhawks since the start of last season, backup Calvin Pickard is expected to start Saturday.

Pickard shined when Varlamov was sidelined, allowing one goal in each of his last three starts with 109 saves on 112 shots. He was a big reason Colorado didn't get blown out by Chicago in their only meeting of the season Nov. 26. He made 42 saves but it wasn't enough as the Blackhawks won 3-2 on goals by Jonathan Toews, Andrew Shaw and Bryan Bickell.

Crawford made 27 saves to beat the Avalanche for the first time since 2011 after going 0-4-2 with a 4.38 GAA in his previous six meetings.

The Blackhawks stopped both of Colorado's power-play chances in the first matchup and have the league's best penalty kill percentage at 90.7 - the best mark by any team since 2000.

The Avalanche are one of the league's worst teams with the man advantage but are starting to show some signs of life in that department. They've scored with the extra skater in each of their last three games, converting 4 of 11 chances after going 5 for 58 in their previous 19 contests.

"We realize the importance of the power play, and we should be a better power-play team than we have been," Jarome Iginla told the Avalanche's official website. "Guys are feeling better all the way around, our whole game, and I think that is carrying over to the power play."

Alex Tanguay, Colorado's leader with 12 goals, has three in the last three games after notching two in his previous 11. He has not scored in his last seven games against the Blackhawks and has just one goal in his last 19 matchups.
