KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 37-30-15, 89 points. Ninth overall in Western Conference.
COACH: Dave Tippett, fifth season with Arizona, 156-96-42; In 10th NHL season as coach, 427-252-107.
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, C Joe Vitale, RW B.J. Crombeen, G Devan Dubnyk.
LOST: RW Radim Vrbata, C Mike Ribeiro, D Derek Morris, LW Paul Bissonnette, G Thomas Greiss.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Antoine Vermette. As Ribeiro struggled late last season, Vermette surged to the forefront as Arizona's top center. He led the Coyotes with 24 goals last season and is a superb two-way player - a perfect fit for Tippett's defense-first system. A bigger season could be on the horizon as the Coyotes lean on him more.
OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Arizona lost captain Shane Doan for 12 games due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and goalie Mike Smith was out the final 10 games with a knee injury. Even with the injuries, the Coyotes finished two points out of the West's final playoff spot. Stay relatively healthy and get back to their defensive ways, they might be in the mix again this season.
VANCOUVER: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, finished 12th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Willie Desjardins, first season with the Canucks.
ADDED: C Nick Bonino, LW Derek Dorsett, G Ryan Miller, D Luca Sbisa, RW Radim Vrbata.
LOST: RW Zac Dalpe, D Jason Garrison, C Ryan Kesler, C Mike Santorelli, C Jordan Schroeder.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ryan Miller. On June 29, 2013, the Canucks had a goaltending tandem of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider. When Vancouver's season ended 288 days later, the duo in net was Eddie Lack and Jacob Markstrom after Schneider and Luongo were traded. In a combined 45 games with Vancouver, Lack and Markstrom were 17-19-5 with a 2.39 goals against average and .908 save percentage. Miller, who was signed to a three-year, $18 million free agent deal, has a 2.55 GAA and .916 save percentage the last four seasons.
OUTLOOK: The dismissals of coach John Tortorella and Kesler, traded to Anaheim, can be seen as addition by subtraction. Kesler's in-season trade request became a distraction for a team whose 2013-14 campaign was an unmitigated failure. So the Canucks can do nothing but improve in 2014-15. Will there be enough improvement to qualify for a playoff berth? That may be too much to ask for a team in the tough Western Conference.

*Coyotes-Canucks Preview* =========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Arizona (11-17-4) at Vancouver (19-11-2), 10:00 p.m. EDT

The Vancouver Canucks have ended a five-game losing streak that featured plenty of offensive struggles.

That's also been the case in recent games against the Arizona Coyotes, which is something they'll try to remedy Monday night as they attempt to conclude a four-game homestand with an even record.

Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over Calgary halted a 0-4-1 stretch during which the Canucks (19-11-2) had scored seven goals. They're now 8-2-1 against the Pacific Division despite being outscored 30-29.

"It gives the boys a little confidence," goaltender Ryan Miller told the team's official website. "We were doing a lot right within this streak and we got rewarded with some bounces tonight."

Radim Vrbata's goal against the Flames came on the power play for Vancouver's first in 22 chances over seven games.

"You are going to go through these stretches," Miller said. "I thought we kept working, got some good bounces tonight and that's what happens with hockey."

Vrbata, who will play his former team for the second time, and Yannick Weber gave Vancouver a 2-0 lead in the first period, and Christopher Tanev scored the overtime winner to avoid giving away a point.

The Coyotes (11-17-4) are making the second stop on a three-game road trip. They've struggled greatly of late, with Saturday's 4-2 loss at Los Angeles giving them 12 goals on a 1-5-1 stretch.

After building a 2-1 lead in the second period, Arizona allowed two power-play goals and is just 14 for 23 (60.9 percent) on the penalty-kill over this seven-game span. Vancouver, conversely, has gone 23 of 24 (95.8) over eight games.

"We just didn't play hard enough and took some stupid penalties, especially in the offensive zone. It was unacceptable," said Martin Hanzal, who scored for the first time in 11 games since recording a hat trick in Vancouver on Nov. 14. "Obviously, when you're playing a team like that with a 2-1 lead and you give opportunities on the power play, at some point they're going to make you pay."

Hanzal's three goals stand as his only in 23 games against the Canucks and led to a 5-0 win to open the season series. Arizona has won three of the last four meetings with Coyotes goalies posting shutouts in each.

Devan Dubnyk made 35 saves in the November contest, but the previous two Arizona wins featured Mike Smith.

Dubnyk faced the Kings and is 1-3-1 with a 3.12 goals-against average in his last six appearances. Over the last three seasons, he's 4-2-1 with a 2.38 GAA against Vancouver.

Smith is just 1-8-2 with a 3.27 GAA in his last 12 games, but he's 6-1-2 with a 1.92 GAA in his last 10 against the Canucks.

Miller won for the first time in four starts against the Flames and has a 3.72 GAA over a 2-4-0 span. The meeting last month was his first career loss to Arizona, as he fell to 7-1-0 with a 1.73 GAA.

Vancouver expects to have forward Jannik Hansen available after he appeared to collapse on the bench against Calgary following a big hit in the second period. He was taken to the hospital but was said to be OK.

"It's concerning (in the moment)," coach Willie Desjardins said. "It seemed he couldn't get his breath there. He got hit and he couldn't breathe and went down. So whenever that happens, that's not usual.

"But everything checked out at the hospital. Everything's fine."

Arizona defenseman Michael Stone missed the Los Angeles game after suffering an upper-body injury in Tuesday's win over Edmonton. Forward Lauri Korpikoski (lower body) has missed two games.
