| | | BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 54-19-9, 117 points, most in the NHL. Lost to Montreal Canadiens in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien, eighth season in Boston (310-165-65); 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: F Simon Gagne, G Niklas Svedberg.
LOST: F Jarome Iginla, F Shawn Thornton, G Chad Johnson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Defenseman Zdeno Chara is 37, and it's not clear how long his 6-foot-9 body can hold up. He played in 77 games, but had the least time on the ice (in a non-lockout season) since his arrival in Boston in 2006, and his fewest points and penalty minutes as a Bruin, too. He finished the season with a broken finger. Still, he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, which he won in 2009.
OUTLOOK: After winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 and returning to the finals two seasons later, the Bruins posted the NHL's best record last season but were knocked out of the playoffs by the rival Canadiens in seven games in the second round. The Bruins return essentially the same team, including Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron and Vezina winner Tuukka Rask, who led the league with seven shutouts, finished second with a .930 save percentage and was fourth with a 2.03 goals-against average. | | WINNIPEG: LAST SEASON: 37-35-10, 84 points; finished 11th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Paul Maurice, second season with the Jets, 478-469-99-73 overall.
ADDED: C Mathieu Perreault.
LOST: C Olli Jokinen, G Al Montoya.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Evander Kane: The 23-year old is entering his sixth NHL season, all with the Thrashers/Jets franchise. But the question surrounding Kane isn't where he'll start the season. Rather it's where he'll finish. Kane's name has been linked in trade rumors, leading the left winger to tell a Vancouver radio station in July he will operate under the assumption he is ''a Winnipeg Jet.''
OUTLOOK: The Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise has not qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs since the 2006-07 season. That probably won't change in 2014-15. |

*Bruins-Jets Preview* =====================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Boston (16-13-3) at Winnipeg (16-10-6), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Boston Bruins earned one of their few victories in the past three-plus weeks during a visit from the Winnipeg Jets, but road games in the series have not gone their way.
The Bruins look for their second win in six trips to Winnipeg and try to earn back-to-back victories for the first time in nearly a month Friday night.
Boston is 3-5-3 in its last 11 but won 2-1 in overtime against the Jets on Nov. 28. The Bruins (16-13-3) needed another extra session Wednesday for a 3-2 victory at Minnesota that snapped a season high-tying three-game skid.
Loui Eriksson won it with his third goal in five games. Carl Soderberg scored his first in 16 contests, and points leader Patrice Bergeron had his first in the past 12.
The Bruins also got forward David Krejci back after an 11-game absence due to a hip injury.
"We've played some games where we've worked really hard and haven't gotten the results we wanted," backup goaltender Niklas Svedberg said. "Obviously it's a great feeling for us to get a win. We've just got to build off it."
Boston hasn't earned consecutive wins since a three-game streak Nov. 15-21 and is heading to a place where it's 1-3-1 in five visits. The Bruins are also 1-4-2 in their last seven road games against the Jets franchise compared with 13 straight home wins.
Boston is 2-0-1 in its last three on the road while Winnipeg is 3-1-1 at home this month.
The Jets are 6-1-3 in their past 10 overall after a 5-1 rout of Buffalo on Tuesday. Mark Scheifele had two goals and an assist as the Jets bounced back from their only regulation loss in the past three-plus weeks, 4-1 to Anaheim in the opener of a four-game homestand Saturday.
Winnipeg (16-10-6) earned that victory despite a thinning defense corps. Coach Paul Maurice announced Tuesday that Jacob Trouba, who leads all defensemen on the team with 12 points, is out until February with an upper-body injury. Tobias Enstrom and Zach Bogosian also are on the shelf.
The Jets did get defenseman Grant Clitsome back after a six-game absence due to an upper-body injury, and he had an assist on Scheifele's first goal. They also acquired defenseman Jay Harrison from the Hurricanes in exchange for a draft pick Thursday.
"There's nothing that really changes in what we're trying to do," Maurice said. "The big part is that we have got four healthy lines up front, fortunately. We've got to stay on the forecheck and burn the clock and generate as much time in the offensive zone as we can."
Dustin Byfuglien is being moved back to the blue line to make up for those absences. He scored in last month's defeat and has two goals and an assist in his last three games against the Bruins.
Brad Marchand didn't have a point for Boston in the first meeting after registering four goals and an assist in his previous five matchups. He has three goals and five assists in the eight games since that victory.
Evander Kane has three goals and an assist in his last five games against Boston. He had a goal and an assist Tuesday after producing two assists in his prior six contests.
