KEY GAME INFORMATION
COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. Won the Central Division. Lost to Minnesota 4-3 in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Patrick Roy, 2nd season with Colorado, 52-22-8; 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Jarome Iginla, D Brad Stuart, C Daniel Briere, C Jesse Winchester.
LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, F Paul Stastny, G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, D Andre Benoit, D Cory Sarich.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings.
PITTSBURGH: LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Won Metropolitan Division. Lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike Johnston (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: D Christian Ehrhoff, F Patric Hornqvist, C Nick Spaling, F Blake Comeau, G Thomas Greiss.
LOST: F James Neal, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sidney Crosby. Sid ''the Kid'' isn't so young anymore. It's been nearly a decade since he arrived in Pittsburgh and helped rescue a floundering franchise. He rolled to his second MVP Award in 2013-14 after racking 36 goals and 68 assists for a league-leading 146 points. A wrist injury slowed him in the postseason. He scored just once in 13 playoff games.
OUTLOOK: New coach, new general manager but same old expectations in Pittsburgh. It's been more than five years since they lifted the Stanley Cup, a drought that cost former coach Dan Bylsma his job. Johnston brings in a more structured philosophy. There may be growing pains early, but if Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy, the Penguins will again be a threat to make a deep playoff run.

*Avalanche-Penguins Preview* ============================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

Colorado (10-13-7) at Pittsburgh (20-6-4), 7:00 p.m. EDT

While captain Sidney Crosby may be back from a bout with mumps, at least one other member of the Pittsburgh Penguins has contracted the virus that's sweeping the NHL.

After sitting out three games, Crosby could be in the lineup Thursday night looking to help the Eastern Conference-leading Penguins continue piling up points against the sputtering Colorado Avalanche.

Crosby returned to practice Wednesday for the first time since his diagnosis, which came as a surprise after earlier tests showed he wasn't at risk. The star center had a booster shot before traveling to Russia for the Winter Olympics in February.

"It came as a bit of a surprise," team doctor Dharmesh Vyas said. "Every indication was that he was well protected against the disease."

Beau Bennett apparently wasn't, and the team said Tuesday that the right wing had contracted the illness.

The Penguins also tested goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and defensemen Olli Maatta and Robert Bortuzzo, who were cleared earlier this month.

"We're being cautious," general manager Jim Rutherford said. "All three of those players are in isolation. Any time that anybody even starts to not feel well, even if it's not mumps-like symptoms, we've gotten the person or player out of here as soon as we can."

The Penguins (20-6-4) are one of at least five NHL teams that have been affected by the virus, which spreads through mucous and saliva and causes facial swelling and fatigue. There's no specific treatment, so it must run its course over roughly two weeks.

Rutherford said the team is taking extra measures to sanitize Consol Energy Center.

Having Crosby back should at least begin to change the focus from the doctor's office to the ice, and he's among the league leaders with 35 points.

He has eight points in five career meetings with Colorado (10-13-7), but didn't get any in a 1-0 home loss Oct. 21, 2013. An injury forced him to miss a 3-2 shootout win at Colorado on April 6 that was Pittsburgh's fifth win in six meetings.

Evgeni Malkin, who also sat out that contest with a foot injury, has nine points in six career matchups. The center enters this one with seven points in five games after setting up a goal by Steve Downie on Monday.

Brandon Sutter also found the net against the Lightning, and he had two goals at Colorado in April.

The Avalanche have dropped five of six games (1-3-2) after losing 3-2 in overtime to St. Louis on Saturday to conclude a 1-1-1 homestand.

As many as five players returning during this three-game trip could give Colorado a boost, but only defenseman Brad Stuart is assured of playing at Pittsburgh.

Forwards John Mitchell (leg), Patrick Bordeleau (back) and Jesse Winchester (concussion) and goaltender Semyon Varlamov (groin) don't have a concrete return date.

"They're all going to come on the trip," coach Patrick Roy told the team's official website. "Stuart will play Thursday in Pittsburgh. He's ready. He did the testing. He's going to be ready to play.

"For the rest, we'll see on the trip. We'll reevaluate their situation every day."

Gabriel Landeskog has five assists in four games, setting up both tallies by Erik Johnson against the Blues. The captain also has five points in his last four road contests, and he had the lone goal in the most recent visit to Pittsburgh.
