| | | DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 40-31-11, 91 points, 5th Central Division. Made Western Conference playoffs as wild card, lost first-round playoff series in six games to top-seeded Anaheim.
COACH: Lindy Ruff, 2nd season with Stars, 40-31-11; 17th season overall in NHL, was 571-432-162 in Buffalo.
ADDED: C Jason Spezza, RW Ales Hemsky; G Anders Lindback, RW Patrick Eaves.
LOST: RW Alex Chiasson, D Aaron Rome, LW Ray Whitney.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jamie Benn. In his first season as the Stars captain, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked eighth in the NHL with 79 points and ninth with 34 goals. Both were career highs, as was his plus-21 rating. Benn has increasingly accepted his role as a leader on a team filled with plenty of 20-something players, and is part of a dynamic scoring line with Tyler Seguin.
OUTLOOK: With the experience of a hard-fought first-round series in their first season under veteran Ruff, the Stars expect to do more than just make the playoffs this time around. That is a reasonable goal with their added scoring punch. With Benn and Seguin on the front line, the Stars will have another line with 31-year-old former Ottawa teammates Spezza and Hemsky likely together. | | COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. Won the Central Division. Lost to Minnesota 4-3 in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Patrick Roy, 2nd season with Colorado, 52-22-8; 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Jarome Iginla, D Brad Stuart, C Daniel Briere, C Jesse Winchester.
LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, F Paul Stastny, G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, D Andre Benoit, D Cory Sarich.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings. |

*Stars-Avalanche Preview* =========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Dallas (9-9-4) at Colorado (8-10-5), 9:00 p.m. EDT
The Colorado Avalanche won four of the five meetings with the Dallas Stars last season en route to tying their franchise record for wins and finishing atop the Central Division.
The Avalanche have hardly looked like the same team at times this season but had a successful stretch going before their most recent game. The Stars, however, will also be seeking to get back into the win column Saturday night in Denver after having a season-high win streak snapped.
Colorado (8-10-5) has often labored one season after its 52-22-8 campaign in Patrick Roy's NHL coaching debut, but had won four of five before a 3-2 loss to visiting Chicago on Wednesday.
"I think Chicago's fast. We're fast. Dallas is fast, and you don't want to turn it into a track meet because when you trade chances like that, it can go either way. You're either going to score a ton or you're going to give up a ton," defenseman Erik Johnson told the team's official website. "For us, avoiding that track meet type of play will be crucial."
After Ryan O'Reilly scored a tying goal early in the third period Wednesday, the Avalanche gave up the go-ahead one with 5:17 remaining. Colorado erased deficits in the final period in each of its four previous wins and rallied from an early 3-0 hole in Arizona on Tuesday for a 4-3 overtime victory.
Johnson is expected to play in this game after sitting out the loss to Chicago, and John Mitchell could be back after missing the past three contests due to a leg injury.
The Avalanche, losers in four of six at home, might need that extra depth against a Stars team that's 3-0-1 in its last four following a 2-8-2 stretch. Dallas had won three in a row before a 5-4 overtime loss to Minnesota on Friday.
The Stars (9-9-5) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take a lead on Alex Goligoski's goal with 6:31 remaining in regulation but gave up the tying score with 1:52 left.
"We battled for a point, which is awesome," coach Lindy Ruff said. "There's a lot of good in the game, but we seem to throw something really bitter in there to make it hard for me to stand here and tell you I like most parts of our game."
Tyler Seguin had a goal and an assist, giving his six goals and two assists in his last four games. He has four goals and four assists in his last five matchups with Colorado.
Seguin and the Stars are expected to take on Avalanche rookie goaltender Calvin Pickard with usual starter Semyon Varlamov still healing from a groin injury.
Pickard, 2-3-0 with a 2.24 goals-against average in his first five NHL appearances, made his second career start Wednesday.
"It's good for me playing games in the NHL," Pickard said. "You get to feel more comfortable each one that goes by."
The Stars could give backup Anders Lindback his first start since Nov. 8 after Kari Lehtonen was in net for Friday's loss. In his only start against Colorado, Lindback stopped 34 shots in Nashville's 6-1 victory in Denver on April 7, 2012.
Lehtonen, meanwhile, has allowed a combined 10 goals in his last two starts versus the Avalanche.
Colorado's Matt Duchene had three goals and four assists in last season's five-game series. Johnson has two goals and one assist in his past three meetings.
