KEY GAME INFORMATION
PITTSBURGH: LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Won Metropolitan Division. Lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike Johnston (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: D Christian Ehrhoff, F Patric Hornqvist, C Nick Spaling, F Blake Comeau, G Thomas Greiss.
LOST: F James Neal, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sidney Crosby. Sid ''the Kid'' isn't so young anymore. It's been nearly a decade since he arrived in Pittsburgh and helped rescue a floundering franchise. He rolled to his second MVP Award in 2013-14 after racking 36 goals and 68 assists for a league-leading 146 points. A wrist injury slowed him in the postseason. He scored just once in 13 playoff games.
OUTLOOK: New coach, new general manager but same old expectations in Pittsburgh. It's been more than five years since they lifted the Stanley Cup, a drought that cost former coach Dan Bylsma his job. Johnston brings in a more structured philosophy. There may be growing pains early, but if Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy, the Penguins will again be a threat to make a deep playoff run.
CAROLINA: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, 83 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Bill Peters, 1st season with Hurricanes; 1st overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Brad Malone, D Tim Gleason.
LOST: C Manny Malhotra, G Justin Peters, C Brett Sutter.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season.

*Penguins-Hurricanes Preview* =============================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Pittsburgh (15-4-2) at Carolina (6-12-3), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Carolina Hurricanes took a small step toward ending their recent woes by beating one of the NHL's best teams.

The Hurricanes will try to sweep their back-to-back games against Pittsburgh on Saturday night and avoid a season-high third consecutive home loss as well as their fourth in as many visits from the Penguins.

Carolina (7-12-3) had dropped six of seven and three in a row before a visit to Pittsburgh on Friday night. That appeared it would be monumental challenge for the scuffling club with the Penguins (15-5-2) having gone 5-0-1 in their prior six home games.

The Hurricanes, though, came away with a 4-2 victory with Nathan Gerbe scoring the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and the first of two power-play tallies in the final 20 minutes. Carolina was 2 for 15 with a man advantage in its previous six contests, and Gerbe had one goal in his prior 16 games.

"We knew that we were going to need a complete effort in order to be successful against this team, and that could arguably be one of our most complete games thus far," goaltender Cam Ward told the team's official website.

Carolina has put together back-to-back wins just once this season, a four-game streak Nov. 1-7, and will try to accomplish that feat again while beating Pittsburgh at home for the first time since Feb. 28, 2013.

The Hurricanes have been outscored 12-7 in the last three visits from the Penguins but forced overtime in the most recent one Dec. 27 before falling 4-3.

Carolina is also returning to the building where it's been outscored a combined 5-1 in the past two games.

"It's a big game, and we know that. We have to come back with the same effort," captain Eric Staal said. "You have to think they are going to be a little bit better tomorrow, and we're going to have to match and exceed that."

The Penguins are 2-2-1 in their last five overall after Friday's loss but have one of the league's best road records at 8-2-1. However, they'll also be playing their sixth game in nine days Saturday but Carolina will play its third in four days.

"I thought Carolina had more energy than us (Friday)," coach Mike Johnston said. "I give them credit for how they played with their speed and quickness, but certainly we weren't on our game. We have to be on our game and then it's a better measuring stick."

After starting Marc-Andre Fleury on Friday, Johnston could turn to backup Thomas Greiss in this game. Greiss lost his only start against Carolina on Feb. 17, 2012, while with San Jose.

Fleury has allowed a combined seven goals in back-to-back losses to the Hurricanes after going 7-1-0 with a 2.36 goals-against average in his prior eight meetings. He's 3-0-0 with a 2.32 GAA in his last three games in Carolina.

The Hurricanes could look to Cam Ward again as he's 8-1-1 with a 1.88 GAA in his last 10 regular-season home games against the Penguins. Backup Anton Khudobin is 1-1-0 with a 2.02 GAA in his two career matchups, both in Pittsburgh.

Penguins star Sidney Crosby had two assists Friday to extend his point streak against Carolina to 12 games. He has three goals and 16 assists in that run, and one goal and seven assists in his last six games in Raleigh.
