KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: LAST SEASON: 43-27-12, 98 points. Lost to Chicago 4-2 in Western Conference semifinals after beating Colorado 4-3 in first round.
COACH: Mike Yeo, fourth season, 104-82-26.
ADDED: LW Thomas Vanek, LW Brett Sutter, D Justin Falk, D Stu Bickel.
LOST: RW Dany Heatley, LW Matt Moulson, D Clayton Stoner, C Cody McCormick, LW Mike Rupp.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Vanek signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Wild after spending his first nine NHL seasons in the Eastern Conference, primarily with Buffalo. Vanek will be counted on for a scoring boost for a team that tied for 24th in the NHL in goals per game, but with Zach Parise and former Sabres teammate Jason Pominville among the top six forwards the onus is not all on him.
OUTLOOK: After advancing past the first round for only the second time in franchise history with a dramatic upset of the Central Division champion Avalanche, the Wild are on track for more with the addition of Vanek and the development of young forwards Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle, Erik Haula and Nino Niederreiter. The goalie situation is the biggest concern, with Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper returning as the top two after an injury-laden season at the position that forced the Wild to give four different players 19 starts or more in the net.
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 40-31-11, 91 points, 5th Central Division. Made Western Conference playoffs as wild card, lost first-round playoff series in six games to top-seeded Anaheim.
COACH: Lindy Ruff, 2nd season with Stars, 40-31-11; 17th season overall in NHL, was 571-432-162 in Buffalo.
ADDED: C Jason Spezza, RW Ales Hemsky; G Anders Lindback, RW Patrick Eaves.
LOST: RW Alex Chiasson, D Aaron Rome, LW Ray Whitney.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jamie Benn. In his first season as the Stars captain, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked eighth in the NHL with 79 points and ninth with 34 goals. Both were career highs, as was his plus-21 rating. Benn has increasingly accepted his role as a leader on a team filled with plenty of 20-something players, and is part of a dynamic scoring line with Tyler Seguin.
OUTLOOK: With the experience of a hard-fought first-round series in their first season under veteran Ruff, the Stars expect to do more than just make the playoffs this time around. That is a reasonable goal with their added scoring punch. With Benn and Seguin on the front line, the Stars will have another line with 31-year-old former Ottawa teammates Spezza and Hemsky likely together.
PREVIEW

*Wild-Stars Preview* ====================

Minnesota (12-9-0) at Dallas (9-9-4), 8:30 p.m. EDT

Tyler Seguin is crediting an approach that has resulted in a career-high shots on goal per game as the reason he leads the NHL in goals.

He has yet to score this season against the Minnesota Wild.

Seguin will try to change that Friday night and help the Dallas Stars extend their season-high win streak to four games when they host the Wild.

The center has 17 goals to lead the NHL after he finished tied for fifth last season with 37 in his first year with Dallas. He is averaging 3.9 shots on goal per game after averaging 3.7, 3.4 and 3.0 in his last three seasons.

"Things have been clicking, and I've been shooting the puck a bit more than I have in previous years," Seguin said. "Kind of doing more of a shooting-first mentality than always trying to pass."

Dallas (9-9-4) seeks its first four-game win streak since a five-game run April 5-13, 2013. Seguin scored twice in the second period in Tuesday's 3-2 home win over Edmonton.

"There are still things we'd like to sharpen, staying consistent for 60 minutes," center Cody Eakin told the Stars' official website. "But the three wins at home gives us a little confidence and everyone knows with a little confidence you start playing a healthier game. I think that's where we are headed."

Now Seguin will try to break through against Minnesota (12-9-0), which held the superstar pointless in two November wins. The Wild's Darcy Kuemper started both games and stopped 46 of 48 shots.

Kuemper wasn't as sharp Wednesday, allowing four goals on 10 shots before being replaced by Niklas Backstrom to start the second period of a 4-0 loss to Los Angeles.

"Off night for myself. Just was off a little bit tonight and it cost me," Kuemper said.

Both teams are starting back-to-back sets, so it's unclear how they will use their goalies.

Backstrom may not be a good choice to start since he is 1-5-3 with a 3.75 GAA in nine starts at Dallas.

Kari Lehtonen has posted a 2.33 GAA in this win streak, and he's 1-3-1 with a 3.12 GAA in his last seven against Minnesota. The Stars have dropped all three starts by backup Anders Lindback, who won his lone one versus the Wild on April 3, 2012.

The Wild will look for production from Zach Parise, who averages 4.1 shots on goal per game to rank fourth in the NHL. Parise had two assists in a 4-1 victory over the Stars on Nov. 1 before missing a 2-1 win Nov. 15 due to a concussion.

Minnesota's Mikael Granlund has scored twice against Dallas, coming up empty in his other 19 games.

The Wild are 2 for 5 on the power play in the season series. They own the league's second-worst power play at 9.0 percent, including 1 for 41 on the road to rank last in the NHL.

Minnesota defenseman Jonas Brodin (illness) and left wing Matt Cooke (hip) could both return.

Stars forward Ryan Garbutt has been suspended two games for kneeing Edmonton's Taylor Hall on Tuesday. Colton Sceviour will likely take his place in the lineup.
