KEY GAME INFORMATION
COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. Won the Central Division. Lost to Minnesota 4-3 in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Patrick Roy, 2nd season with Colorado, 52-22-8; 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Jarome Iginla, D Brad Stuart, C Daniel Briere, C Jesse Winchester.
LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, F Paul Stastny, G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, D Andre Benoit, D Cory Sarich.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings.
ARIZONA: LAST SEASON: 37-30-15, 89 points. Ninth overall in Western Conference.
COACH: Dave Tippett, fifth season with Arizona, 156-96-42; In 10th NHL season as coach, 427-252-107.
ADDED: C Sam Gagner, C Joe Vitale, RW B.J. Crombeen, G Devan Dubnyk.
LOST: RW Radim Vrbata, C Mike Ribeiro, D Derek Morris, LW Paul Bissonnette, G Thomas Greiss.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Antoine Vermette. As Ribeiro struggled late last season, Vermette surged to the forefront as Arizona's top center. He led the Coyotes with 24 goals last season and is a superb two-way player - a perfect fit for Tippett's defense-first system. A bigger season could be on the horizon as the Coyotes lean on him more.
OUTLOOK: The Coyotes should contend for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. Arizona lost captain Shane Doan for 12 games due to Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and goalie Mike Smith was out the final 10 games with a knee injury. Even with the injuries, the Coyotes finished two points out of the West's final playoff spot. Stay relatively healthy and get back to their defensive ways, they might be in the mix again this season.

*Avalanche-Coyotes Preview* ===========================

By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer

Colorado (7-9-5) at Arizona (9-11-2), 9:00 p.m. EDT

Multiple injuries forced some unlikely players into major roles the last time the Colorado Avalanche took the ice, but they still have managed to put together one of their best stretches of the season.

Colorado seeks a fourth victory in five games as it visits the slumping Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday night.

The Avalanche (7-9-5) sit in last place after winning the Central Division last season as they've struggled to find consistency with key players going down. Forwards Jamie McGinn (back) and Dennis Everberg (separated shoulder) join defenseman Brad Stuart (hamstring) on injured reserve, and goaltender Semyon Varlamov has missed the last two games with a groin strain.

Center John Mitchell won't play in this contest because of a leg injury. Alex Tanguay suffered a facial fracture in Thursday's 3-2 loss to Washington, but he has been cleared by doctors and will the Coyotes.

Colorado called up the entire line of Tomas Vincour, Andrew Agozzino and Ben Street from the AHL to make their season debuts Saturday against Carolina, and rookie Calvin Pickard was recalled to back up Reto Berra in net once Varlamov got hurt.

Vincour and Agozzino each had an assist, and Pickard picked up his first NHL victory by stopping all 17 shots in relief of Berra as Colorado rallied for a 4-3 victory.

Defenseman Zach Redmond scored twice to give him six points in 10 games since making his Avalanche debut Oct. 24.

"I'm hoping to take these opportunities and run with them and go from there," Redmond said.

Agozzino was sent back down Sunday, though, as the Avalanche recalled Paul Carey to have more speed in the lineup against the Coyotes and Chicago on Wednesday, according to coach Patrick Roy.

Berra has allowed six goals on 33 shots starting the last two games in place of Varlamov and has a 3.95 goals-against average in his last five, but Roy is giving him the nod again over Pickard. Berra has made one start against the Coyotes, losing 6-0 while with Calgary on Jan. 7.

"It was one bad period," Roy said of Berra's effort Saturday. "Right now, I think we have to give him the benefit of the doubt."

Arizona (9-11-2) is hoping to be better in front of Mike Smith, who is 0-5-1 with a 2.86 GAA over his last six starts. His coach and teammates praised his effort in Sunday's 2-1 loss to Anaheim despite his fall behind the net that led to the Ducks' first goal.

"They were dominating us, and the only reason it wasn't 4-0 after the first was because of (Smith)," said Keith Yandle, who scored the Coyotes' lone goal. "He made huge saves, timely saves. He was awesome for us and we weren't able to help him out."

Smith wasn't ready to dish out compliments, though. Arizona, playing in the second of a back-to-back set, fell to 1-2-1 in its last four.

"We played the first two periods like we expected to be tired," Smith said. "You've got to push through that. A lot of teams in this league are tired. We've played the least back-to-back games of any team in this league. The first two periods we played like we felt tired instead of going after it."

Smith has been solid in his career against the Avalanche, going 6-0-3 with a 1.72 GAA in nine starts.

The Coyotes were 5-0-2 in the previous seven matchups before Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and two assists in Colorado's 4-2 victory in the most recent meeting Feb. 28.
