KEY GAME INFORMATION
PITTSBURGH: LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Won Metropolitan Division. Lost to New York Rangers in Eastern Conference semifinals.
COACH: Mike Johnston (first season, first NHL season).
ADDED: D Christian Ehrhoff, F Patric Hornqvist, C Nick Spaling, F Blake Comeau, G Thomas Greiss.
LOST: F James Neal, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Sidney Crosby. Sid ''the Kid'' isn't so young anymore. It's been nearly a decade since he arrived in Pittsburgh and helped rescue a floundering franchise. He rolled to his second MVP Award in 2013-14 after racking 36 goals and 68 assists for a league-leading 146 points. A wrist injury slowed him in the postseason. He scored just once in 13 playoff games.
OUTLOOK: New coach, new general manager but same old expectations in Pittsburgh. It's been more than five years since they lifted the Stanley Cup, a drought that cost former coach Dan Bylsma his job. Johnston brings in a more structured philosophy. There may be growing pains early, but if Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are healthy, the Penguins will again be a threat to make a deep playoff run.
BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 54-19-9, 117 points, most in the NHL. Lost to Montreal Canadiens in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien, eighth season in Boston (310-165-65); 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: F Simon Gagne, G Niklas Svedberg.
LOST: F Jarome Iginla, F Shawn Thornton, G Chad Johnson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Defenseman Zdeno Chara is 37, and it's not clear how long his 6-foot-9 body can hold up. He played in 77 games, but had the least time on the ice (in a non-lockout season) since his arrival in Boston in 2006, and his fewest points and penalty minutes as a Bruin, too. He finished the season with a broken finger. Still, he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, which he won in 2009.
OUTLOOK: After winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 and returning to the finals two seasons later, the Bruins posted the NHL's best record last season but were knocked out of the playoffs by the rival Canadiens in seven games in the second round. The Bruins return essentially the same team, including Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron and Vezina winner Tuukka Rask, who led the league with seven shutouts, finished second with a .930 save percentage and was fourth with a 2.03 goals-against average.

*Penguins-Bruins Preview* =========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Pittsburgh (13-4-2) at Boston (13-9-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Boston Bruins have struggled offensively over the past six games, a cause for extra concern for many teams entering a matchup with the high-scoring Pittsburgh Penguins.

Recent history in the series, however, has featured the Bruins dominating and containing the Penguins' offensive production.

They'll try to carry that into 2014-15 when the teams meet in Boston on Monday night to open the three-game season series.

The Bruins (13-9-0) took two of three last season and have won six of seven dating to a postseason sweep in 2013 while limiting the Penguins to 10 goals. They've won the last four in Boston, but they're more concerned with current offensive struggles and injuries.

Boston has scored nine goals during a 3-3-0 stretch after Saturday's 2-0 home loss to Montreal opened a three-game homestand on a down note.

"If there's something we're going to critique here it's probably the fact that we didn't put enough pucks on net and get some net-front presence," coach Claude Julien told the team's official website. "... We're not scoring goals easily these days, so we've really got to get our noses dirty in front of the net and throw some pucks in areas where we can jump on those loose pucks."

The Bruins were missing forwards David Krejci, Brad Marchand and Chris Kelly because of undisclosed injuries, and they're also dealing with ongoing defensive injuries highlighted by the absence of Zdeno Chara. Krejci has missed eight of the last 10 games, Marchand has been out for three, and Kelly has been sidelined for one.

"I don't think we can start thinking about when this guy's coming back, when this guy's coming back because then we can lose our focus and our focus needs to be playing our hockey and grinding it out," goaltender Tuukka Rask said.

Despite not knowing who will be in front of him lately, Rask has been strong over a 6-2-0 stretch this month with a 1.89 goals-against average.

Against the Penguins (13-4-2), Rask has been even better with a .956 save percentage over a 6-1-0 stretch, including playoffs. That could be tested more than in seasons past.

Pittsburgh fell 4-1 at the New York Islanders on Saturday to complete a disappointing 0-1-1 home-and-home series, though it is still averaging a league-best 3.53 goals, which is over a goal better than Boston (2.50).

Part of that prolific scoring in the early going was due to special teams, but that's leveled out some for the Penguins, who are 1 for 10 on the power play in the last six games and had just two opportunities over the last three.

Evgeni Malkin scored Saturday and has two goals and four assists on a four-game point streak. Against Boston, Malkin has been very quiet with an assist in his last six games.

Teammate Sidney Crosby went a second straight game without a point and hasn't gone three straight in the regular season since a five-game drought from Oct. 31-Nov. 10, 2009. He's been limited to four points in his last nine against Boston.

"All we do after this one is forget it," Crosby said of the latest loss.

In goal, backup Thomas Greiss faced the Islanders, which likely puts Marc-Andre Fleury between the pipes against Boston. His last 10 starts have resulted in a 8-1-1 record and 1.76 GAA. In Boston, he's 5-2-2 with a 2.27 GAA in 10 career games.
