KEY GAME INFORMATION
ST LOUIS: LAST SEASON: 52-23-7, 111 points. Tied for third overall in Western Conference, lost in first round to Chicago.
COACH: Ken Hitchcock, third full season with Blues. 124-55-20. 657-405-178 overall in 18 seasons, seventh on career win list.
ADDED: C Paul Stastny, C Jori Lehtera, D Carl Gunnarsson, C Colin Fraser, F Robby Fabbri.
LOST: G Ryan Miller, D Roman Polak, F Vladimir Sobotka, F Brenden Morrow.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaden Schwartz. Signing Stastny in free agency creates open ice for everyone else. Schwartz led team at plus-28 last season and scored 25 goals.
OUTLOOK: They've been among the NHL's best regular-season teams the last few seasons, and one of the stingiest, too. Last season they allowed the third-fewest goals, plus defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk are highly productive joining the rush. They appear to have enough firepower to contend for an ever-elusive first Stanley Cup, although as usual there's plenty of competition at the top of the Western Conference.
WINNIPEG: LAST SEASON: 37-35-10, 84 points; finished 11th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Paul Maurice, second season with the Jets, 478-469-99-73 overall.
ADDED: C Mathieu Perreault.
LOST: C Olli Jokinen, G Al Montoya.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Evander Kane: The 23-year old is entering his sixth NHL season, all with the Thrashers/Jets franchise. But the question surrounding Kane isn't where he'll start the season. Rather it's where he'll finish. Kane's name has been linked in trade rumors, leading the left winger to tell a Vancouver radio station in July he will operate under the assumption he is ''a Winnipeg Jet.''
OUTLOOK: The Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise has not qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs since the 2006-07 season. That probably won't change in 2014-15.

*Blues-Jets Preview* ====================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

St. Louis (12-6-1) at Winnipeg (10-8-3), 4:30 p.m. EDT

The St. Louis Blues' offense woke up from a brief slump to help them avoid another loss.

The Winnipeg Jets would like to see some of their stars do the same.

St. Louis seeks its eighth win in nine meetings Sunday when it visits Winnipeg.

The Blues (13-6-1) are trying to salvage a split of their four-game trip following Saturday's 3-2 win at Ottawa. They had totaled one goal in back-to-back losses after scoring four or more four times during a 4-1-0 stretch.

"It was good for the boys to get the win," said T.J. Oshie, who is without a point in seven road games. "It was good for us to get some goals for our goaltenders as they've been working hard and playing outstanding all year."

St. Louis limited Ottawa to five shots over the final 20 minutes, allowing Alexander Steen's second-period goal to hold up as the winner. The Blues have been outscored 20-19 in the third period after creating a plus-11 margin over the first two periods.

"We've had that habit in the past where we've sat back on our heels and teams just come at us in waves and waves and waves," captain David Backes told the team's official website. "I think we did a better job of getting it in there, not sitting on our heels, getting on our toes and making sure they had to come through 200 feet to score goals."

Leading point scorer Vladimir Tarasenko recorded his team-leading 12th goal and will look to be more productive against Winnipeg after posting one point in four previous meetings. Jaden Schwartz, who has 12 points over his last nine games after assisting on Tarasenko's goal, has one point in five matchups with the Jets.

Alex Pietrangelo snapped a six-game point drought with two assists Saturday.

The Jets (10-8-3) fell to 4-4-1 at home with Thursday's 4-3 loss to Detroit. They led 2-0 early in the second period but gave up the tying and go-ahead goals in the third while being outshot 14-9. They claimed a 22-13 advantage in shots through the first 40 minutes.

"We worked the first 40 (minutes) pretty good as a team," said Dustin Byfuglien, who ended a 14-game goal drought in the second period. "There were a few little things that we could have done better. Throughout the whole year we've stuck together and played pretty good as a team. You're going to have your games where you get a few mistakes and it ends up in the back of the net."

Blake Wheeler, who leads the team with eight goals, is without a point in three straight games. Andrew Ladd and Bryan Little are Winnipeg's Nos. 2 and 3 point scorers, but Ladd has two points in seven games while Little is stuck in a seven-game drought without a point.

Ladd, though, has nine points in his last nine meetings with St. Louis.

The Jets are 0 for 21 on the power play during a 2-3-1 stretch after squandering three chances Thursday. They own the league's second-least efficient power play at 8.6 percent. Wheeler has yet to find the back of the net on the man advantage after tying for the team lead with eight power-play goals in 2013-14.

Both Ottawa goals surrendered by St. Louis came on the power play.
