KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: LAST SEASON: 43-27-12, 98 points. Lost to Chicago 4-2 in Western Conference semifinals after beating Colorado 4-3 in first round.
COACH: Mike Yeo, fourth season, 104-82-26.
ADDED: LW Thomas Vanek, LW Brett Sutter, D Justin Falk, D Stu Bickel.
LOST: RW Dany Heatley, LW Matt Moulson, D Clayton Stoner, C Cody McCormick, LW Mike Rupp.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Vanek signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Wild after spending his first nine NHL seasons in the Eastern Conference, primarily with Buffalo. Vanek will be counted on for a scoring boost for a team that tied for 24th in the NHL in goals per game, but with Zach Parise and former Sabres teammate Jason Pominville among the top six forwards the onus is not all on him.
OUTLOOK: After advancing past the first round for only the second time in franchise history with a dramatic upset of the Central Division champion Avalanche, the Wild are on track for more with the addition of Vanek and the development of young forwards Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle, Erik Haula and Nino Niederreiter. The goalie situation is the biggest concern, with Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper returning as the top two after an injury-laden season at the position that forced the Wild to give four different players 19 starts or more in the net.
PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 42-30-10, 94 points. Finished 3rd in Metropolitan Division. Sixth in Eastern Conference. Lost to New York Rangers in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Craig Berube, 2nd season with Flyers (42-27-10); 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: C R.J. Umberger, LW Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, D Michael Del Zotto
LOST: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Steve Downie, LW Tye McGinn, C Kris Newbury, D Erik Gustafsson, D Bruno Gervais
PLAYER TO WATCH: Flyers center Claude Giroux. Back earlier than expected from an unspecified lower-body injury, Giroux needs to be in top form if the Flyers expect to play deep into the postseason. Giroux was selected last season as a Hart Trophy finalist, the league's MVP award. He matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race (86 points).
OUTLOOK: The Flyers need Steve Mason to play again like a true No. 1 goalie and for Giroux to play like an MVP candidate for the Flyers to have a shot at ending their Stanley Cup drought. The Flyers are 0 for the Cup since they won consecutive Cups in 1974 and 1975 and seemed poised to build a dynasty. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs (1966-67) have suffered longer than any other team that was won at least one Stanley Cup.

*Wild-Flyers Preview* =====================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Minnesota (10-7-0) at Philadelphia (7-8-2), 7:00 p.m. EDT

Zach Parise helped keep the Minnesota Wild's win streak going in his return from injury this past weekend. The Philadelphia Flyers, meanwhile, couldn't end their skid despite having Claude Giroux available.

The Wild seek a season-high fourth straight win while sending the Flyers to a fourth consecutive loss Thursday night.

Parise tallied a pair of goals Sunday after missing five games with a concussion, and Marco Scandella scored the winning one in a 4-3 overtime victory against Winnipeg in his return from a two-game absence due to an illness.

"As soon as you start feeling too good about yourself in this league, you get yourself in trouble. We know that we have a lot of work to do, and we know we have a tough (three-game) road trip coming up," coach Mike Yeo said.

Minnesota (10-7-0) is 3-6-0 away from home but claimed a 2-1 win over Dallas in its most recent game there Saturday.

In their next one, the Wild face a Flyers team that's had trouble at both ends of the ice during its three consecutive defeats. Philadelphia (7-8-2) gave up a combined 10 goals in the first two losses and fell 2-0 at the New York Rangers on Wednesday while Giroux - among the NHL leaders with 16 assists - played through an ankle injury.

The Flyers captain, who hurt himself in practice Monday, was held without a point for just the second time in 11 games.

Philadelphia's performance in that defeat led general manager Ron Hextall to chew out the team behind closed doors.

"It bothered me a lot," Hextall said. "I don't think we were hungry enough. I'm very disappointed."

The Flyers will try to respond while adding to their 7-1-1 all-time home record against Minnesota. Philadelphia is 5-0-1 in the past six visits and has outscored the Wild 29-12 in those nine home games.

Wayne Simmonds had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 home victory over the Wild on Dec. 23, and Giroux provided a goal and an assist. Josh Harding made 21 saves in a 2-0 victory for Minnesota on Dec. 2, but was sent to the minors Tuesday.

Darcy Kuemper, who earned the win Sunday after replacing Niklas Backstrom, might be in net in Philadelphia. He's 8-5-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average heading into what would be his first matchup with the Flyers.

Playing in back-to-back games and facing a Western Conference opponent, Philadelphia could counter with backup Ray Emery, but he's given up a combined 10 goals in his last two starts. Emery is 4-1-1 with a respective 2.29 GAA in his six career games against the Wild while Steve Mason is 2-1-0 with a 1.68 GAA in his last three meetings.

Philadelphia had won five straight home games before a 4-3 loss to Columbus on Friday.
