PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season. | | LOS ANGELES: LAST SEASON: 46-28-8, 100 points. PLAYER TO WATCH: D Brayden McNabb. Mitchell's departure was the only significant change to the Kings' championship roster, and they hope the bruising McNabb can make the full-time NHL leap into his spot.
OUTLOOK: This tenacious, balanced team has won two of the last three Stanley Cup titles, playing a record 64 postseason games in that stretch. There's no reason to think the Kings can't contend for three crowns in four years, an NHL feat that hasn't been accomplished since Edmonton did it in 1990. |

The Los Angeles Kings have not yet displayed the dominance that carried them to last season's Stanley Cup title, but judging by the recent increased production throughout the roster, they seem to be getting close.
The Kings may get another boost at home Thursday night when they face a Carolina Hurricanes team that has trouble stopping opponents from scoring.
Los Angeles (10-5-4) has earned a point in six of seven games after five players scored in a 5-2 win over Florida on Tuesday, which included the first goals of the season for defensemen Matt Greene and Robyn Regehr.
Greene had not scored since Oct. 19, 2013, and Regehr's last goal came Feb. 26.
"It's good to see Robyn and Greener score," coach Darryl Sutter said. "They don't get much credit, and they give you the blue collar every night. They deserve it."
Anze Kopitar picked up two points to give him seven in the last five games, and the steady production of Jeff Carter, whose 17 points rank second on the team behind Tyler Toffoli, was also present.
Carter scored the first of two power-play goals for Los Angeles, which has five in nine chances over the last two games. The Kings were 1 for 27 in the previous nine contests.
"We started to keep it a little more simple," Carter said. "Simple plays, getting pucks to the net. When you do that, you get rewarded."
The Kings have scored 18 times in the last five games after registering 10 goals during a 1-3-2 stretch.
Carolina (6-9-3) looks to slow Los Angeles' attack with a defensive unit that ranks among the best in the NHL with 27.7 shots allowed per game. Yet in spite of that effort, the Hurricanes give up nearly three goals per game thanks in large part to the streaky play of Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin, who combine for a .894 save percentage - one of the worst marks in the league.
Ward had an .852 save percentage Tuesday in a 6-4 win at Dallas, raising his goals-against average to 2.57, and Khudobin is 0-4-2 with a 2.96 GAA in six starts this season.
Eric Staal scored two goals and added an assist Tuesday. He ranks second among Hurricanes forwards with 11 points despite missing five games with an upper-body injury.
"He was good all night. He was good early and often," coach Bill Peters said. "I really liked his game and his line. That's what your captain does. He's been excellent for us coming back from injury."
The Hurricanes defeated the Kings 3-2 on Nov. 2 as Ward stopped 30 shots to outduel Jonathan Quick, who made 29 saves.
Quick hasn't lost in regulation since, going 4-0-2 with a 1.94 GAA in six starts, and he has a 1.63 GAA in three career matchups with Carolina. Ward is 3-0-2 with 1.75 GAA in five starts against Los Angeles.
The Kings have won five of seven overall in the series and six of seven in Los Angeles, including the last three there.
