KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: LAST SEASON: 46-27-9, 101 points. Swept in first round of playoffs by Montreal.
COACH: Jon Cooper, second full season with Lighting, 51-35-12.
ADDED: F Brian Boyle, F Brenden Morrow, D Anton Stralman, D Jason Garrison, G Evgeni Nabokov, F Jonathan Drouin.
LOST: G Anders Lindback, F Ryan Malone, F Teddy Purcell, F Nate Thompson, D Sami Salo.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ondrej Palat. One of the NHL's top rookies last season. With Steven Stamkos missing a significant portion of the year and Martin St. Louis departing in a late-season trade, Palat finished with team-leading 50 points, including 23 goals. Third among league rookies in goals and second in points, he led all rookies with 44 points after Jan. 1.
OUTLOOK: With Bishop healthy again after missing the playoffs with a dislocated elbow, many expect the Lightning to prosper in the relatively weak Eastern Conference and make a deep run in the playoffs. Stamkos has scored more goals (210) than any player in the league since the start of the 2009-10 season and Bishop is coming off a season in which he set franchise season records for wins (37), save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.23).
WINNIPEG: LAST SEASON: 37-35-10, 84 points; finished 11th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Paul Maurice, second season with the Jets, 478-469-99-73 overall.
ADDED: C Mathieu Perreault.
LOST: C Olli Jokinen, G Al Montoya.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Evander Kane: The 23-year old is entering his sixth NHL season, all with the Thrashers/Jets franchise. But the question surrounding Kane isn't where he'll start the season. Rather it's where he'll finish. Kane's name has been linked in trade rumors, leading the left winger to tell a Vancouver radio station in July he will operate under the assumption he is ''a Winnipeg Jet.''
OUTLOOK: The Atlanta/Winnipeg franchise has not qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs since the 2006-07 season. That probably won't change in 2014-15.

*Lightning-Jets Preview* ========================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Tampa Bay (4-2-1) at Winnipeg (2-4-0), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Injuries to key players haven't prevented the Tampa Bay Lightning from achieving some early success.

Though the visiting Lightning are off to a solid start, they'll again try to win consecutive games for the first time Friday night against the Winnipeg Jets.

With defensemen Victor Hedman (hand) and Radko Gudas (lower body) both on injured reserve and wingers Alex Killorn (upper body) and Ryan Callahan (lower body) day to day, Tampa Bay (4-2-1) pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory at Calgary on Tuesday to improve to 2-1-0 on its five-game trip.

"It's like the domino effect," said Lightning coach Jon Cooper, whose team has alternated wins and losses. "We don't know when these guys are coming back. We have to rely on some other areas. We've got to pick up the slack."

Forward Jonathan Drouin, the third overall pick in 2013, could be one of those players Cooper leans on. In his second NHL game Tuesday, Drouin recorded his first point with an assist on Valtteri Filppula's tying goal late in the third period.

"I heard he made a great play out of the corner to see (teammate Jason Garrison, who earned the primary assist)," said Cooper, who took his eyes off the ice at the time of the goal.

"That's what guys like (Drouin) do," Copper added. "I always say they've got the third eye, and with that third eye, they can see things that other guys can't and that's what he did."

After committing a costly turnover in Tampa Bay's 3-2 loss at Edmonton a night earlier, Ondrej Palat scored the winner three minutes into overtime. Palat, who posted 23 goals and 36 assists in his first full NHL season in 2013-14, has recorded all four of his points in the last five games.

"He's such an unnoticed player in this league but so good," Cooper said. "I don't know if there'd be a coach in the league that would sit here and not want to take an Ondrej Palat or have a guy like that on his team."

Palat scored in Tampa Bay's 4-2 win at Winnipeg on Jan. 7.

The Jets (2-4-0) were outscored 13-2 during their four-game losing streak, which ended with Tuesday's 3-1 home victory over Carolina.

"I think spirits are good now," said Jets defenseman Grant Clitsome, who recorded an assist in his season debut. "It was a pressure game. We needed the win and we've been talking a lot about it in the room."

Three different Jets scored, but they failed to produce goals on any of their five power-play chances.

After ranking 25th while converting 15.4 percent of such opportunities last season, Winnipeg is 0 for 19 with the man advantage.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has allowed its opponents to convert only 3 of 23 power-play chances.

"We're not getting enough from our back end to up front," said Jets coach Paul Maurice, who hopes the continued placement of versatile 6-foot-5, 265-pound Dustin Byfuglien in front of the net will help improve the team's power-play performance.

Byfuglien, who also scored Tuesday, had a goal with an assist in last season's home loss to the Lightning.
