KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 40-31-11, 91 points, 5th Central Division. Made Western Conference playoffs as wild card, lost first-round playoff series in six games to top-seeded Anaheim.
COACH: Lindy Ruff, 2nd season with Stars, 40-31-11; 17th season overall in NHL, was 571-432-162 in Buffalo.
ADDED: C Jason Spezza, RW Ales Hemsky; G Anders Lindback, RW Patrick Eaves.
LOST: RW Alex Chiasson, D Aaron Rome, LW Ray Whitney.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jamie Benn. In his first season as the Stars captain, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked eighth in the NHL with 79 points and ninth with 34 goals. Both were career highs, as was his plus-21 rating. Benn has increasingly accepted his role as a leader on a team filled with plenty of 20-something players, and is part of a dynamic scoring line with Tyler Seguin.
OUTLOOK: With the experience of a hard-fought first-round series in their first season under veteran Ruff, the Stars expect to do more than just make the playoffs this time around. That is a reasonable goal with their added scoring punch. With Benn and Seguin on the front line, the Stars will have another line with 31-year-old former Ottawa teammates Spezza and Hemsky likely together.
NEW JERSEY: LAST SEASON: 35-29-18, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Peter DeBoer, 4th season with Devils (102-76-34); 7th overall in NHL (205-183-70).
ADDED: LW Mike Cammalleri, LW Martin Havlat, C Scott Gomez, G Scott Clemmensen.
LOST: G Martin Brodeur, D Anton Volchenkov, D Mark Fayne.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaromir Jagr. Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 43 assists in remarkable season in which he played in all 82. Can he do it again at 42-years-old. If he does, the Devils have a shot at getting back into the playoffs for the first time since reaching NHL Finals in 2011-12.
OUTLOOK: After finishing with fourth fewest goals in the league, the Devils hope free-agent signees Cammalleri (26 goals) and Havlat (12 goals in 48 games) can boost the scoring, along with Adam Henrique, who scored a career-high 25-goals last season. With Broduer not re-signed, Cory Schnedier will get most of the work in goal after posting a 1.97 goals against average in 46 games last season. Defense allowed 208 goals, ninth best in the league.

*Stars-Devils Preview* ======================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Dallas (3-1-2) at New Jersey (3-2-1), 7:00 p.m. EDT

A pair of road victories started the Dallas Stars on their prosperous stretch, and they'll try to add another by keeping the New Jersey Devils winless at home.

The Stars go for their fourth win in five games overall as they look to send New Jersey to a fourth consecutive defeat Friday night.

Dallas (3-1-2) bounced back from dropping its first two games by winning at Columbus and Pittsburgh, then strung together two high-scoring home contests.

The Stars lost a two-goal lead after two periods and suffered a 6-5 overtime loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, then got off to a flying start in a 6-3 victory over Vancouver on Tuesday. Dallas scored five times in the first 21:17 and forced Canucks goaltender Ryan Miller out of the game while sending him to his first loss.

Erik Cole finished the onslaught with his second goal 4:44 into the second period, and Jamie Benn scored his fourth in as many contests. Dallas has 18 goals in the past four games.

Kari Lehtonen made a season-high 43 saves and has had to face 83 shots over the last two contests, a priority for the Stars to fix.

"We've been good offensively. We've created enough good opportunities. ... I'd like to find a happy medium somewhere and clean up the defensive side, where we take care of that first before we start leaning on the offensive side," coach Lindy Ruff told the team's official website. "It cost us a point in the Philly game, where we were up two goals."

Dallas has gone 3-0-1 in the last four against New Jersey, which is 0-2-1 in its past three. The Devils (3-2-1) have given up 14 goals in those three games after yielding six in their first three, and allowed the New York Rangers to rally from a two-goal deficit in the third period of a 4-3 overtime loss Tuesday.

The Devils (3-2-1) gave up the tying goal with 5:28 remaining in regulation before dropping to 0-1-1 at home. They scored three-power play goals but allowed two and have given up five in the last 12 times short-handed.

Dallas has four goals in its last 13 opportunities with the man advantage.

"We've got to clean up our special teams, our penalty killing for sure, to help us win," coach Peter DeBoer said. "If we're going to give up two power-play goals a night, it's going to be hard to win. In our room, we have the confidence we can clean that up."

New Jersey last dropped its first three home games in 2010-11 during a franchise-worst 0-5-2 start. The Devils are 7-0-1 in the last eight home games against Dallas, winning the past two, and have taken three consecutive overall matchups.

Cory Schneider made 26 saves while outplaying Lehtonen in a 1-0 home victory Jan. 9, and Patrik Elias completed the season sweep with his overtime goal in a 3-2 win Jan. 30. Schneider is 7-3-0 with a 2.11 goals-against average in 10 career matchups and is likely to be in net as New Jersey looks to avoid its first four-game losing streak since last season's 0-4-3 start.

Benn, with eight points in his past four games, scored in last season's overtime loss. Linemate Tyler Seguin, who has five goals and five assists in his previous four contests, has scored three goals and added two assists in his past six matchups with the Devils.
