| | | VANCOUVER: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, finished 12th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Willie Desjardins, first season with the Canucks.
ADDED: C Nick Bonino, LW Derek Dorsett, G Ryan Miller, D Luca Sbisa, RW Radim Vrbata.
LOST: RW Zac Dalpe, D Jason Garrison, C Ryan Kesler, C Mike Santorelli, C Jordan Schroeder.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ryan Miller. On June 29, 2013, the Canucks had a goaltending tandem of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider. When Vancouver's season ended 288 days later, the duo in net was Eddie Lack and Jacob Markstrom after Schneider and Luongo were traded. In a combined 45 games with Vancouver, Lack and Markstrom were 17-19-5 with a 2.39 goals against average and .908 save percentage. Miller, who was signed to a three-year, $18 million free agent deal, has a 2.55 GAA and .916 save percentage the last four seasons.
OUTLOOK: The dismissals of coach John Tortorella and Kesler, traded to Anaheim, can be seen as addition by subtraction. Kesler's in-season trade request became a distraction for a team whose 2013-14 campaign was an unmitigated failure. So the Canucks can do nothing but improve in 2014-15. Will there be enough improvement to qualify for a playoff berth? That may be too much to ask for a team in the tough Western Conference. | | COLORADO: LAST SEASON: 52-22-8, 112 points. Won the Central Division. Lost to Minnesota 4-3 in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Patrick Roy, 2nd season with Colorado, 52-22-8; 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: RW Jarome Iginla, D Brad Stuart, C Daniel Briere, C Jesse Winchester.
LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, F Paul Stastny, G Jean-Sebastien Giguere, D Andre Benoit, D Cory Sarich.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Nathan MacKinnon. As hard as this may be to believe, the speedy 19-year-old may have even gotten faster in the offseason working out with the likes of Matt Duchene and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. MacKinnon was the league's rookie of the year in 2013-14 after scoring 24 goals and dishing out 39 assists. Roy isn't concerned with a sophomore jinx with MacKinnon, saying, ''I think Nate's going to do a very good job this year despite the way people think about a second-year player.''
OUTLOOK: The Avalanche surprised the hockey world by winning the Central Division in Roy's first season. Now, Roy's eager to see his squad take the next step, which is to go even deeper into the postseason. The team added more veteran leadership by signing Iginla, along with trading for Briere and Stuart. They also have Alex Tanguay back after he missed most of the season with knee and hip injuries. Colorado boasts two formidable lines that will include some combination of Matt Duchene, Ryan O'Reilly, captain Gabe Landeskog, Iginla, Tanguay and MacKinnon. Roy is still tinkering to find the best pairings. |

*Canucks-Avalanche Preview* ===========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Vancouver (3-2-0) at Colorado (1-4-2), 9:00 p.m. EDT
Semyon Varlamov's solid start to the 2013-14 season led to his nomination as a Vezina Trophy finalist as he helped guide the Colorado Avalanche to their first division title in 11 years.
But even when he's been in goal this season, the Avalanche haven't been nearly as good as they were during their first campaign under coach Patrick Roy.
Varlamov returns from a three-game absence as Colorado looks to snap its four-game skid Friday night against the visiting Vancouver Canucks.
The Avalanche started 12-1-0 last season as Varlamov went 8-1-0 with a 1.78 goals-against average in that stretch. He finished with a league-best 41 victories as Colorado won the Central before losing in seven games to Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs.
It's been much more of a struggle to kick off this season. The Avalanche fell to 1-4-2 after losing to Florida 4-3 in overtime Tuesday, extending a slide that began when Varlamov allowed an OT goal in a 3-2 loss to Toronto on Oct. 14.
They've been outscored 24-12 this season and have allowed at least three goals six times.
"We're close, but there's nothing wrong (with) going through some adversity at this time," Roy told the team's official website. "I think it makes every one of us realize that there's things we could do better on the ice, especially under pressure."
Varlamov is 0-2-1 with a 3.80 GAA and hasn't played since feeling discomfort in his groin prior to Colorado's 5-3 loss to Ottawa on Oct. 16. He won both of his starts with a 1.98 GAA against the Canucks last season.
"I'm ready to go. I'm healthy," Varlamov said. "Nobody wants to be injured, especially in the beginning of the season. It's very important to have a good start of the season."
Vancouver (4-2-0) won its first three games before a two-game skid, which it ended with Thursday's 4-1 victory at St. Louis on the second stop of a three-game road trip.
Chris Higgins scored 41 seconds into the game before Nick Bonino, Linden Vey and Jannik Hansen each scored in the third period. Coach Willie Desjardins, though, wasn't happy with his team's penchant for handing out power plays.
"We gave them some life in the second period with all our penalties," Desjardins said after watching his team commit at least five for a third straight game. "We have to make sure we stay disciplined."
The Canucks' inability to stay out of the box could provide more opportunities for an Avalanche team that has had its struggles with the man advantage. Colorado went 1 for 22 in its first six contests before converting 2 of 5 against the Panthers.
Tyson Barrie and captain Gabriel Landeskog each scored on the power play in the second period.
"You look at the power plays we've had, we haven't been getting enough shots," Barrie said. "Fire the puck, get some one-timers, get traffic in front and try to score some ugly ones."
Ryan Miller made 31 saves for the Canucks on Thursday, meaning Eddie Lack could get the start in this contest. Lack, whose lone career start against Colorado was a 3-2 overtime defeat March 27, made his only start of the season Saturday in a 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay.
Avalanche defenseman Ryan Wilson won't be in the lineup and is expected to miss 2-3 weeks with a shoulder injury suffered Tuesday. Roy said Zach Redmond could make his Colorado debut in Wilson's place.
