KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: LAST SEASON: 46-27-9, 101 points. Swept in first round of playoffs by Montreal.
COACH: Jon Cooper, second full season with Lighting, 51-35-12.
ADDED: F Brian Boyle, F Brenden Morrow, D Anton Stralman, D Jason Garrison, G Evgeni Nabokov, F Jonathan Drouin.
LOST: G Anders Lindback, F Ryan Malone, F Teddy Purcell, F Nate Thompson, D Sami Salo.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ondrej Palat. One of the NHL's top rookies last season. With Steven Stamkos missing a significant portion of the year and Martin St. Louis departing in a late-season trade, Palat finished with team-leading 50 points, including 23 goals. Third among league rookies in goals and second in points, he led all rookies with 44 points after Jan. 1.
OUTLOOK: With Bishop healthy again after missing the playoffs with a dislocated elbow, many expect the Lightning to prosper in the relatively weak Eastern Conference and make a deep run in the playoffs. Stamkos has scored more goals (210) than any player in the league since the start of the 2009-10 season and Bishop is coming off a season in which he set franchise season records for wins (37), save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.23).
CALGARY: LAST SEASON: 35-40-7, 77 points, finished 13th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Bob Hartley, fourth season with Calgary, 383-291-61-45 overall.
ADDED: LW Brandon Bollig, D Deryk Engelland, G Jonas Hiller, LW Mason Raymond.
LOST: D Chris Butler, LW Mike Cammalleri.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Johnny Gaudreau. Offense was a major issue for the Flames, who finished 23rd and 24th, respectively, in goals per game (2.46) and power play percentage (15.7). Gaudreau, the reigning Hobey Baker winner, recorded 80 points (36 goals and 44 assists) in 40 games with Boston College.
OUTLOOK: With the possible exception of John Tortorella, who attempted to fight his way into the Calgary dressing room during the first intermission of a Jan. 18 game in Vancouver to ostensibly express his displeasure about a line brawl following the opening faceoff, Hartley and the Flames earned praise around the NHL for their hardworking style of play. Even with the addition of Gaudreau and friends to the lineup, don't expect the Flames to change their modus operandi. But it's too much to ask the Flames to compete for a playoff berth.

*Lightning-Flames Preview* ==========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Tampa Bay (3-2-1) at Calgary (4-3-0), 9:00 p.m. EDT

While the Calgary Flames used Monday's off day to give a top defenseman an extension, the Tampa Bay Lightning began getting used to playing without their top blue-liner.

The upbeat Flames return home Tuesday night to host the Lightning, who are making their third stop on a five-game trip with injuries mounting.

The Flames (4-3-0) are opening a five-game homestand in high spirits after a 4-2-0 road swing, which ended with Sunday's 4-1 victory at Winnipeg.

Calgary defenseman T.J. Brodie scored against the Jets, has seven points in seven games and was rewarded with a five-year contract extension Monday. The 24-year-old's three goals in that time are one shy of his career high set last season over 81 games.

"He's playing against the other team's top players," general manager Brad Treliving told the team's official website. "These are hard minutes, these are minutes against top players, special team minutes and it's not only what he's doing defending but, in a lot of cases - at least early on in the season - he's been driving our offense. These types of players are so critical to have success in today's game."

Such statements might feel like salt in a wound to the Lightning (3-2-1) after they lost Victor Hedman for at least a month due to a broken finger. Hedman, who also has three goals and four assists to start the season, is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday.

Monday's 3-2 loss at Edmonton was the Lightning's first game without him, and they let a 1-0 lead slip away before allowing the decisive goal in the final four minutes.

"We have to be better," goalie Ben Bishop said. "We can't come out and play like this on the road and expect to win. We had too many breakdowns all over the ice. We showed some fight in the third, but it still wasn't even close enough to win in this league."

They were also without defenseman Radko Gudas (lower body), who could return Tuesday, and center Alex Killorn, who suffered an upper-body injury in the morning skate. Forward Ryan Callahan (lower body) was also knocked out of the game and didn't return.

The game marked the NHL debut of 2013 No. 3 pick Jonathan Drouin, who was a surprise callup in place of Killorn and posted 16:10 of ice time with a shot on goal.

Bishop allowed three goals on 23 shots, though his goals-against average still stands at 1.97. His last visit to Calgary on Jan. 3 resulted in a shutout, but it's his only win in four starts against the Flames.

Backup Evgeni Nabokov is 3-8-0 with a tie, 3.19 GAA and .885 save percentage in his last 12 starts in Calgary.

In addition to Brodie's fast start, the Flames have gotten plenty of production from Mason Raymond, who joined the team in July as a free agent and has thus far made good on his three-year deal with five goals and two assists in seven games. He had a goal and two assists against the Jets and lauded the collective start of the team.

"Six games, it doesn't matter if you're traveling way east or way west or what have you, but it's not an easy trip," Raymond said. "I think collectively we're really pleased with the outcome."

In goal, fellow newcomer Jonas Hiller used a 34-save effort to improve to 2-2-0 with a 2.22 GAA and .942 save percentage.

Karri Ramo, a 2004 draft choice of Tampa Bay, has also been strong with a 2-1-0 record, 2.30 GAA and .920 save percentage. Ramo is 1-1-0 with a 1.51 GAA and .951 save percentage in two games against his former team.
