KEY GAME INFORMATION
TAMPA BAY: LAST SEASON: 46-27-9, 101 points. Swept in first round of playoffs by Montreal.
COACH: Jon Cooper, second full season with Lighting, 51-35-12.
ADDED: F Brian Boyle, F Brenden Morrow, D Anton Stralman, D Jason Garrison, G Evgeni Nabokov, F Jonathan Drouin.
LOST: G Anders Lindback, F Ryan Malone, F Teddy Purcell, F Nate Thompson, D Sami Salo.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ondrej Palat. One of the NHL's top rookies last season. With Steven Stamkos missing a significant portion of the year and Martin St. Louis departing in a late-season trade, Palat finished with team-leading 50 points, including 23 goals. Third among league rookies in goals and second in points, he led all rookies with 44 points after Jan. 1.
OUTLOOK: With Bishop healthy again after missing the playoffs with a dislocated elbow, many expect the Lightning to prosper in the relatively weak Eastern Conference and make a deep run in the playoffs. Stamkos has scored more goals (210) than any player in the league since the start of the 2009-10 season and Bishop is coming off a season in which he set franchise season records for wins (37), save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.23).
EDMONTON: LAST SEASON: 29-44-7, 67 points, finished 14th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Dallas Eakins, second season with the Oilers, 29-44-7.
ADDED: D Mark Fayne, D Nikita Nikitin, F Benoit Pouliot, F Teddy Purcell.
LOST: D Anton Belov, C Sam Gagner, LW Ryan Smyth.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Justin Schultz: The Oilers signed the defenseman to a one-year, $3,675,000 deal on Aug. 29. Why one year? ''Justin is going to be a great player and a great Oiler. What we wanted to do as an organization is buy ourselves a little bit of time to negotiate a long-term deal,'' general manager Craig MacTavish said. ''We as an organization wanted a little more information, fully aware information can be expensive.''
OUTLOOK: Six straight years of drafting in the top 10 and stockpiling high-end young talent without showing tangible on-ice improvement tends to create skepticism.

*Lightning-Oilers Preview* ==========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Tampa Bay (3-1-1) at Edmonton (0-4-1), 9:30 p.m. EDT

The Tampa Bay Lightning got their lengthy road trip off to a promising start but likely lost one of their top defensemen for the rest of the trek.

A matchup with winless Edmonton would appear to give the Lightning a prime chance to overcome Victor Hedman's absence, and Tampa Bay will try to send the Oilers to their first six-game winless start in franchise history Monday night.

Steven Stamkos had two first-period goals and assisted on Ryan Callahan's tiebreaking one Saturday as the Lightning (3-1-1) topped Vancouver 4-2. Hedman left the game in the second period after sustaining an upper-body injury, and coach Jon Cooper said the defenseman "is probably done" for the rest of the five-game trip.

After Saturday's games, Hedman was tied for the league lead among defensemen with three goals and seven points.

"It's unreal how these things happen, but he is going to go back to Tampa and get re-evaluated," Cooper said. "We're hoping for the best.

"We're going to test our depth. It just puts a little more pressure on the (defensive) core."

Hedman is also tied for the team lead in points with Stamkos, who has all five of his goals in the last three games. The Lightning center has four goals in five career games against Edmonton (0-4-1), with Tampa Bay winning the last two he's played.

He missed the lone visit to Rexall Place last season, a 5-3 defeat Jan. 5, because of a broken right leg.

The Lightning have outscored their first five opponents 17-9 while the Oilers have been outscored 24-11 in their worst start since 1992-93. Edmonton also went winless in its first five games in that campaign with four losses and a tie, and is one of two remaining winless teams this season along with Carolina.

After giving up 22 goals in their first four contests, the Oilers had an improved defensive showing Friday against Vancouver in their opener to a season-high, seven-game homestand but couldn't get anything past Ryan Miller in a 2-0 defeat.

"I thought we played a lot better, but your play is measured in wins and losses," goaltender Ben Scrivens said. "It's only one game, so the same way we tried not to panic after a couple of losses, we're not going to rest on anything, playing one good game.

"The key is coming out and playing another good game after that. The more we can do that, the idea is that the wins start to fall after that."

Edmonton has recorded the fewest home or tied for the fewest home wins in the Western Conference in five of the last six seasons. The Oilers also finished just one ahead of Columbus' 17 in 2011-12 but have won a series high-tying three consecutive home games over Tampa Bay.

Jordan Eberle had a pair of goals in the win in January and two assists in a 4-2 loss in Tampa Bay on Nov. 7, but he has only two assists in his first four games this season.

Taylor Hall has three goals and an assist in three career games against the Lightning. He registered three of his team-best four points this season in Wednesday's 7-4 loss.

Tampa Bay's Valtteri Filppula has a three-game goal-scoring streak versus Edmonton.

The Lightning recalled forward Jonathan Drouin from Syracuse of the AHL on Sunday and the third overall pick in the 2013 draft could make his NHL debut in this game. Drouin was one of junior hockey's top players the past two years, finishing with 29 goals and 108 points in 46 games last season for Halifax of the QMJHL.
