KEY GAME INFORMATION
NY ISLANDERS:

LAST SEASON: 34-37-7, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 14th in the Eastern Conference.

COACH: Jack Capuano, 3rd season with Islanders, 60-66-21; 3rd overall in NHL.

ADDED: D Lubomir Visnovsky, D Matt Carkner, RW Brad Boyes, LW Eric Boulton, D Radek Martinek.

LOST: RW P.A. Parenteau, G Al Montoya, C Micheal Haley.

PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. Fresh off his first 30-goal season in the NHL, the 22-year-old center is already establishing himself as a star heading into his fourth year with the Islanders. Tavares has increased his goal and point totals each season, topping out at 31 goals and 81 points in 2011-12 while playing in all 82 games.

OUTLOOK: With veteran goalie Evgeni Nabokov behind them, the Islanders could surprise some people in a short season. With young talent up front, led by Tavares, the up-and-coming club could hang around and perhaps sneak into a playoff spot in the sprint to the finish.

NY RANGERS:

LAST SEASON: 51-24-7, 109 points. Lost to New Jersey 4-2 in Eastern Conference finals.

COACH: John Tortorella, 6th season with Rangers, 145-100-26; 14th overall, 384-322-100 in NHL.

ADDED: LW Rick Nash, RW Arron Asham, C Micheal Haley, LW Taylor Pyatt, C Jeff Halpern.

LOST: C Artem Anisimov, C Brandon Dubinsky, D Tim Erixon, C John Mitchell, RW Brandon Prust, G Chad Johnson, D Jeff Woywitka, D John Scott, LW Ruslan Fedotenko.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Nash. The big power forward has finally emerged from relative obscurity and landed on the big stage. The 28-year-old Nash, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft by Columbus, played in only four playoff games in nine seasons with the Blue Jackets. His size and scoring ability will both be major factors for the Rangers' offense, which now boasts three premier forwards in Nash, Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards.

OUTLOOK: With reigning Vezina Trophy winner Henrik Lundqvist in net, and Nash teaming up with Gaborik and Richards up front, the Rangers have every reason to believe they can again top the Eastern Conference in the regular season and carry that through the playoffs, as well.

*Islanders-Rangers Preview* ===========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

New York (4-7-1) at New York (7-5-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The New York Rangers' home dominance of the New York Islanders showed few signs of stopping last week.

The Islanders' latest effort may not inspire much confidence, either.

The Rangers look to extend their longest winning streak of the season by beating the Islanders for a ninth consecutive time at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

The Rangers (7-5-0) have outscored the Islanders 35-11 during the home win streak, which was extended last Thursday with a 4-1 victory. That started their longest run of the season, which reached three games with Tuesday's 4-3 shootout victory at Boston after squandering a three-goal third-period lead.

"We have to learn from it," said captain Ryan Callahan, who scored the decisive goal in the fourth round of the shootout. "But at the same time we showed some character in not giving up and not folding the tent in overtime."

The Rangers lead the league in bench penalties, and they're all for having too many men on the ice. They were whistled for another versus the Bruins and had one against the Islanders last week.

"It (stinks). It's stupid. It (stinks). It's brutal. I can use a lot of different things," coach John Tortorella said.

Marian Gaborik may feel somewhat similar about his lack of offensive production recently. He leads the Rangers with six goals but has one in the past seven games, scoring last week against the Islanders.

The right wing has nine goals and three assists in the last eight meetings against them at MSG, scoring seven times in the past six.

Rookie J.T. Miller, 19, scored his first two goals last week against the Islanders, but he's come up empty in two games since.

Carl Hagelin hasn't, scoring three goals and setting up another in the past two contests.

Henrik Lundqvist may be back in net since he's won seven straight home starts against the Islanders while compiling a 1.27 goals-against average and posting three shutouts.

He has a 1.63 GAA during the Rangers' three-game winning streak.

The Islanders (4-7-1) have dropped five in a row after blowing three different leads before surrendering four third-period goals in a 6-4 loss to Carolina on Monday.

"Anybody that's seen us play knows we're limiting the opposition's chances per game, but we're just not finding a way to get it done right now," coach Jack Capuano told the team's official website. "The guys are working hard. We've got to stay positive. We're going through a funk right now, facing some adversity."

The Islanders are trying to avoid their first six-game losing streak since Oct. 20-Nov. 3, 2011.

The Islanders went 4 for 5 on the power the Hurricanes after failing to convert on their previous 22 chances.

John Tavares had one of those tallies to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games after starting it against the Rangers. Of his team-leading seven goals, four have come with the man advantage.

The center has 19 points in the past 13 meetings with the Rangers, registering three goals and four assists in the past six visits to Manhattan.

Islanders left wing Matt Moulson has also found success in this series, scoring 10 goals with 10 assists in 19 meetings. He has eight points in the six most recent games at the Garden and enters after notching two goals and an assist Monday.
