KEY GAME INFORMATION
SEATTLE: Under head coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks have churned out yards behind a zone-blocking scheme, first overseen by Alex Gibbs and now by Tom Cable. They use a lot of inside zone plays to free up Marshawn Lynch for yardage between the tackles. Lynch took a huge workload last year, and could give way to Christine Michael and Robert Turbin a bit more often this season. Seattle also gets a lot of rushing yards out of quarterback Russell Wilson, who takes the option to run on a lot of designed rollouts. The red zone is typically all Lynch all the time, as he had nearly two-thirds of their red zone touches. That won't change this year.
Seattle utilizes Wilson's mobility by moving the pocket around a lot'Wilson also moves when it isn't by design due to his lack of size and Seattle's shaky pass protection. They'll move Percy Harvin around and feature him in catch-and-run situations as the likely focal point of the passing game. The other receivers, some mix of Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Sidney Rice and rookie Paul Richardson, will work downfield. They'll use Zach Miller as a check- down option, while Lynch is occasionally used in the screen game. When they throw in the red zone, Miller was most often their top weapon in the end zone.
Seattle led the NFL in scoring defense, total defense, red-zone defense and interceptions in 2013. The 'Legion of Boom' may miss cornerbacks Brandon Browner and Walter Thurmond, but All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman and free safety Earl Thomas still remain. The front seven is still stacked with defensive ends Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril, who combined for 16.5 sacks for the Seahawks last season.
ST LOUIS: The Rams' running game found its footing in the second half of last year. They use a variety of looks behind a scheme that is heavy in zone blocking, utilizing a fullback and two tight ends, and running out of shotgun sets. Zac Stacy will be the workhorse. He thrived running in space behind the creative blocking schemes, especially on the perimeter. Rookie Tre Mason figures to take a decent workload behind him, as the Rams look to keep both their undersized runners healthy and fresh. The 224-pound Stacy will once again likely take on a monster red-zone workload, as the Rams tend to go very ground-heavy near the goal line. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's playbook is full of short drops, play-action and catch-and-run situations. Tight end Jared Cook emerged as the No. 1 target by default, as the Rams effectively move him around to find mismatches. They're hoping Titans cast-off Kenny Britt can take over at split end and provide a true No. 1 receiver. Tavon Austin figures to have a more consistent role this year, and they'll use him throughout formations. Chris Givens will be a deep threat again, and expect more screen-game work for Stacy, as Mason isn't ready to passing downs. When they throw inside the 20, quarterback Sam Bradford will usually look for one of his tight ends: Cook or Lance Kendricks. Britt might also work his way into the red-zone mix.
This team has an NFL-high 105 sacks since 2012 and new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will make sure that doesn't change with basically the same personnel plus some rookies. The Rams recovered 11 more fumbles last season than in 2012, and scored five defensive touchdowns for the second straight year.

*Seahawks-Rams Preview* =======================

By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Though the Seattle Seahawks are battered physically and bruised mentally, they still appear to be in much better shape than the St. Louis Rams.

Left agitated from their latest defeat and maybe by the sudden trade of Percy Harvin, the Seahawks look to bounce back by sending the Rams to an 0-4 home start Sunday.

Seemingly out of nowhere Friday afternoon, Seattle agreed to deal Harvin to the New York Jets even though the speedy wideout leads the team with 22 receptions. However, he had only 133 yards receiving, including zero on three catches last week as his touches continued to mostly initiate behind the line of scrimmage.

It's unclear if Harvin, who also has 92 yards on 11 rushing attempts this season, was unhappy with his current role. It's possible the Seahawks also were struggling with how to properly use him.

"He's got great quickness so we can use him in that. The test always is, is to make sure some of those guys get the ball in their hands," offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said earlier in the week.

The highlight of Harvin's brief Seahawks career was an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the Super Bowl.

Seattle (3-2) never expected things to go as smoothly as they might have appeared during their 2013 championship season, and Sunday's 30-23 home loss to surging Dallas proved that.

Averaging an NFL-leading 167.3 rushing yards entering the contest, the Seahawks were held to 80 with Marshawn Lynch gaining 61 on only 10 carries.

Russell Wilson was 14 of 28 for a season-low 126 yards with an interception, and led a Seattle offense that went 5 of 13 on third down. With Harvin gone, Wilson's only receivers who have more than 10 catches this year are Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse.

A Seahawks defense that yielded 249 rushing yards in the first four games gave up 162 to a Cowboys team that went 10 for 17 on third down. Dallas joined San Diego in reaching the 30-point mark against Seattle this season.

The Seahawks, who allowed an opponent to hit that mark once last year, hasn't lost back-to-back games since October 2012.

"I think everybody was a little frustrated," Wilson said. "We're so competitive, and we all want to win. "When things aren't going the way that you practice them all the time, or the way that you're used to, or the way that you expect, sometimes you get a little frustrated."

While coach Pete Carroll took responsibility for the performance, he's pleased with his team's understanding of the situation.

"We just have to get better," Carroll told the Seahawks' official website. "Players seem to be willing to accept they have to get better, too. So we're working on that, and point the finger at me first.

"I think we're still working at it. Sometimes it takes quite a while before you find it and we're not quite there yet because we haven't found the consistency."

Carroll and the Seahawks might need to move on without more key performers.

Linebacker Bobby Wagner (toe) is expected to miss at least the next two games, center Max Unger will sit out a second straight Sunday and tight end Zach Miller (ankle) will miss his third in a row. Cornerback Byron Maxwell (calf) also has been ruled out, and offensive tackle Russell Okung continues to play through a shoulder injury.

Carroll knows Lynch will be on the field and needs to get the ball in his hands more.

In Seattle's three victories, Lynch has 63 attempts for 270 yards and three touchdowns. He's carried 16 times for 97 and no rushing scores in the defeats.

"We don't ever want to play a game when Marshawn carries the ball 10 times," Carroll said. "That's not enough. That's not our format that we're trying to build from."

Lynch has rushed for at least 97 yards in four of his last five games against the Rams (1-4), but was held to a season-low 23 on eight carries in a 14-9 win at St. Louis on Oct. 28.

Carroll, however, seems likely to feed "The Beast" often against a St. Louis defense that ranks 26th against the run with 139.8 yards allowed per game.

Losers of three straight and 16 of 18 to Seattle, the Rams allowed 89 rushing yards to San Francisco on Monday, but a season-high 343 through the air in dropping their third in a row, 31-17.

Coach Jeff Fisher's main concern, however, should be with his team's play at home, where it's in danger of dropping its first four games for the first time since 2009. The Rams opened at home with a 34-6 loss to Minnesota on Sept. 7, blew a 21-0 lead in a three-point defeat to Dallas on Sept. 21 and squandered a 14-point advantage against the 49ers.

They've been outscored 66-19 in the second half of those contests.

"What we're doing here is right," Fisher said. "The players are coming to work. They're having fun, they're working hard. We don't have the production that we'd like. Things will turn."

St. Louis will look to make that happen with running backs Zac Stacy, Benny Cunningham and rookie Tre Mason in the mix.

After rushing for 973 yards and seven TDs as a rookie in 2013, Stacy has scored once while gaining 240 on 61 carries this season. He was held to 17 on eight attempts Monday, but rushed for a career-high 134 in the home loss to the Seahawks last year.

Cunningham has scored a TD in two straight games and Mason ran five times for 40 yards and caught a pass for 12 in his NFL debut Monday.

Fellow rookie Austin Davis has thrown all seven of his TD passes in the last three games, but also three picks, two of which have been returned for scores. Three of his four interceptions have been brought back for touchdowns.
