KEY GAME INFORMATION
CLEVELAND: Kyrie Irving has no timetable for a return after fracturing his kneecap in the Finals. He remained effective and productive alongside LeBron James, but Cleveland has to play it safe with him in the regular season . . . Despite the shaky Finals performance, Iman Shumpert got paid this offseason. He can defend, but he's a fifth option on offense and is out until January after undergoing wrist surgery . . . Mo Williams will alleviate some of Irving's point guard load, as his shooting makes him a nice fit alongside old pal LeBron . . . Unlikely postseason hero, Matthew Dellavedova figures to lose playing time but still has a place in the NBA as an energy guy . . . Joe Harris has some upside as a shooter, but will be buried on the bench. Look for LeBron James to take a little more time off than he has in past years, but he'll still be in the MVP conversation . . . They'll have to figure something out for Kevin Love, who was neither comfortable nor effective for most of last season . . . Newly-signed Tristan Thompson is more of a big body than anything else. He'll clear space around the basket for offensive boards, but he's not a rim protector and won't scare anyone offensively . . . Richard Jefferson figures to take on solid second-unit minutes. He still has something left in the tank . . . James Jones gives them another shooter to spread the floor, and absorbs any minutes that would have gone to Mike Miller . . . Rookie Sir'Dominic Pointer has no chance to make the rotation. Timofey Mozgov will often sit when opponents go small ball, but he has made strides as a capable defender and underrated scoring threat . . . Coming off a ruptured achilles, Anderson Varejao will likely fill a part-time role. Most guys have a rough time in their first season back from that injury.
TORONTO: He was never quite right health-wise late last year (which led to the poor conditioning head coach Dwane Casey cited this summer). Still, if healthy, Kyle Lowry can regain the borderline All-Star form he had two years ago . . . DeMar DeRozan makes a fine living attacking and getting to the line, but he has still yet to add a consistent three-point shot . . . Cory Joseph had quietly developed into one of the league's best back-up point guards in San Antonio, a lock down defender and efficient offensive player . . . Rookie Delon Wright does a lot of things well, but is most likely looking at a developmental year . . . Norman Powell is a big scoring guard who could be a solid bench piece down the line. The Raptors spent big to bring in DeMarre Carroll, a true 3-and-D wing . . . With Amir Johnson signing with Boston, Patrick Patterson has a chance to step into the starting lineup. He's fairly one-dimensional offensively, mostly camping out for corner threes . . . Toronto brought in competition for the power forward spot by signing Luis Scola. He's a mediocre at best defensively, but can take advantage of weaker defenders in the low-post . . . His development seems to have stalled, and Terrence Ross will try to reinvent himself as a sixth man . . . James Johnson has never been capable of handling big minutes, but he's a solid second-unit player who does everything well . . . Bruno Caboclo is still at least a year away from the rotation. Jonas Valanciunas has plenty of talent, but he doesn't do the little things well on offense (like screening) and is a defensive liability. It's why his minutes will continue to be limited . . . Bismack Biyombo is a zero on offense, but he's effective as a rim-protector and rebounder . . . Lucas Nogueira is still coming along as a long-term project.
