KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA CLIPPERS: The Clips will keep closer tabs on Chris Paul's regular-season minutes after spending big to beef up their bench . . . J.J. Redick has become a decent enough defender to go along with his spot-up shooting . . . L.A. spent the offseason trying to unload Jamal Crawford, not particularly surprising after a down year . . . The Clips are rolling the dice that Lance Stephenson can become a versatile bench piece. At his worst, he's a trainwreck . . . What we'll always remember best about Austin Rivers' 2015 postseason play is the laughter . . . Pablo Prigioni gives the Clips a more reliable, more versatile, and all-around better alternative to Rivers . . . C.J. Wilcox is still a work-in-progress as a 3-and-D wing. Blake Griffin has improved immensely as a shooter, passer and ball-handler, capable of initiating the offense when Chris Paul is unavailable. He has also shown a tendency to back down and let DeAndre Jordan clean up the boards . . . Paul Pierce is the kind of shot-maker they'll need for the postseason, but they'll keep him under wraps a bit in the regular season . . . He'll back up both forward spots, and the Clippers are hoping to get an in-control Josh Smith. He is going to be a part of a combustible second unit . . . He'll be strictly a bench option, as Wesley Johnson gives them another long-range shooter on the wing . . . Second-round pick Branden Dawson should pick up garbage time minutes. Part of the Clippers' pitch to win back DeAndre Jordan was that he'd have a bigger role in the offense. He's still a top rebounder and rim protector, but could end up with more low-post oportunities . . . Plodding big Cole Aldrich gives them another traditional center to back up Jordan. . . Nikoloz Tskitishvili is also somehow in the picture for Los Angeles. He'll be trying to shed his bust label, but he won't see much playing time.
MIAMI: Goran Dragic will run the offense, as the Heat continue to evolve post-LeBron. He'll also benefit from the return of a pick-and-pop big in Chris Bosh . . . He's on the back nine of his career, but Dwyane Wade is still effective on the offensive end of the court. Durability is another issue . . . They have no need for Mario Chalmers with Dragic in town. Unfortunately, no one seems interested in trading for him . . . Sixth man Gerald Green adds firepower off the bench . . . If Chalmers is dealt, Tyler Johnson would step up as Dragic's primary back-up . . . James Ennis will be battling for a roster spot this fall . . . Josh Richardson is a good athlete with the versatile skill set to become a bench option down the line. Luol Deng will get another shot after a disappointing first season in Miami. He will have to settle for being a fourth or fifth option on offense again this season . . . Drafting in the lottery for the first time in years, the Heat landed an NBA-caliber athlete in Justice Winslow. Like all current NCAA players, he will be making a mammoth leap to NBA competition. He won't see consistent minutes unless he's knocking down shots . . . A knee injury wiped out just about all of Josh McRoberts' first season with the Heat. He'll have to be 100% healthy to earn back a rotation spot this season . . . Udonis Haslem continues to hang around as an effective back-up big man. He even talked about adding a three-point shot this summer. Chris Bosh might be slowed early in the year, but he'll be recovered from his blood-clot scare and should be comfortable in a stretch 4 role . . . Hassan Whiteside will anchor Miami's defense and in general clean up the glass . . . When Miami needs more offense than Whiteside offers, they can turn to Amar'e Stoudemire as a part-time player . . . Chris Andersen is basically a Birdman mascot.
PREVIEW
Clippers-Heat Preview
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

The Miami Heat's recent surge is about to get a pair of major tests prior to the All-Star break.

The Heat go for a seventh win in eight tries Sunday when they attempt to salvage a split of the season series with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Miami (29-22) is one-half game behind Atlanta for the Southeast Division lead with two left before the break - one fewer than the Hawks.

Entering the layoff with some momentum will be tough since the Heat host Southwest-leading San Antonio on Tuesday after facing the Clippers (33-17).

Miami, though, has won six of seven games after beating Charlotte 98-95 on the road Friday. The Heat dominated the paint with a 64-32 scoring edge, and Hassan Whiteside had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks for his fourth triple-double.

"It's obvious we're not like a big 3-point shooting team. We're going to beat guys up in the paint. That's our motto; 'A physical Miami Heat team,'" said Whiteside, whose average of 4.0 blocks is ahead of the 3.9 franchise record set by Alonzo Mourning in 1998-99.

Whiteside has totaled 33 points, 27 rebounds and five blocks during his last two meetings with the Clippers. However, his 10 points and 11 boards off the bench weren't enough in a 104-90 road defeat Jan. 13.

Los Angeles held a 42-32 scoring edge in the paint in that one even though DeAndre Jordan didn't play. Cole Aldrich had 19 points in 24 minutes in his place, while Dwyane Wade had seven turnovers - one less than the Clippers had as a team.

Wade has averaged 21.8 points over the past eight games while Chris Bosh has put up 20.3 per game. Bosh came three assists shy of a triple double against the Clippers last month, totaling 11 points and 12 boards.

That win was the last of Los Angeles' 10 straight and it's continued to play well without Blake Griffin by winning seven of its past 11. The Clippers never trailed Friday in a 107-93 victory at Orlando to open a four-game road trip.

While Chris Paul, J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford combined for 61 points, reserve Lance Stephenson made all six of his shots and finished with 13 points in 19 minutes at power forward.

"Never in my wildest imagination did I see Lance Stephenson playing the four," coach Doc Rivers said. "We have found something. You can't guard him at the four. You can't put a four on him and every team that's tried to do that, it has been good for us."

Stephenson is averaging 4.5 points on the season, but he's getting 8.8 over the last four while going 15 of 19 from the field.

"I think I can help the team anywhere on the floor," Stephenson said. "I've been in an attack mode since I've been playing the four."

Paul has averaged 21.3 points and 11 assists over the past three games against the Heat.
