|
| | | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set. | | UTAH: GUARDS: TREY BURKE is likely the lead guard here, though it's really by default. He doesn't have the athleticism to make a lot of plays in the lane, and will have to rely on difficult shot-making . . . He continues to steadily improve, and there could be a bigger role available for ALEC BURKS. He'll have to develop a more consistent three-point shot before he really breaks out though . . . DANTE EXUM is an electrifying athlete, but he's making an enormous jump from essentially high school ball in Australia. He could be a gem in the long run, but don't expect him to do much as a rookie . . . TOURE' MURRY will likely play some garbage minutes. FORWARDS: He ascended to the alpha role in Utah, but GORDON HAYWARD had some struggles with the extra defensive attention. He should improve somewhat, as he knows what's coming, and has added a runner to his repertoire . . . DERRICK FAVORS will play more at the 4-spot this season, and he has the strength to power his way to easy baskets. He's a potential double-double guy . . . RODNEY HOOD had an up-and-down year at Duke despite his physical gifts. He has an NBA-caliber combination of size and athleticism, but right now he's a streaky shooter with a lot of rough edges on his game . . . TREVOR BOOKER is a solid second-unit big man, a defensive bruiser and good screener on offense . . . JEREMY EVANS can dunk, but provides little else . . . STEVE NOVAK will never be a full-time player, but he's still one of the league's elite shooters. CENTERS: He was disappointing last season, but ENES KANTER still has some upside on the offensive end of the floor. How he and Favors will mesh is yet to be seen . . . RUDY GOBERT is a shot-blocking fool, but still ultra-raw |

*Nuggets-Jazz Preview* ======================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Denver (28-46) at Utah (33-41), 9:00 p.m. EDT
Resurgent defensive play has been the difference for the Utah Jazz of late, as they've won back-to-back games since last week's sloppy performance against the Denver Nuggets.
The Jazz can exact some revenge Wednesday night as they try to salvage a four-game series split with the visiting Nuggets.
Utah (33-41) ranks as the NBA's stingiest team with 94.9 points allowed per game, and it's gone 29-7 when allowing 96 or fewer. The Jazz beat Oklahoma City 94-89 on Saturday and Minnesota 104-84 on Monday after allowing an average of 102.8 points during a four-game skid.
The last of those defeats was 107-91 at Denver on Friday as Utah surrendered its highest point total in 35 games. Gordon Hayward had 24 points and Rudy Gobert added 14 and 14 rebounds, but the Jazz couldn't keep up as the Nuggets shot 51.3 percent - including 13 of 24 from 3-point range.
"They cause a lot of problems and they have a lot of guys who can shoot, so they're a dangerous team," Hayward said.
Utah also lost this season's first meeting 103-101 at home Dec. 1 with a 104-82 road victory sandwiched in between. Hayward has averaged 23.4 points in his last five games against the Nuggets, 6-3 in the last nine meetings.
Hayward led the way with 22 points against the Timberwolves while Gobert and Trevor Booker combined for 32 and 25 boards. The Jazz held a 47-34 edge on the glass and outscored Minnesota 22-11 in transition.
"We found a little bit of a rhythm. I think, again, when you get some stuff off your defense and get some easy baskets, the game just gets easier," coach Quin Snyder said.
The Nuggets (28-46) are looking to bounce back from their fifth loss in seven games, 120-114 at Portland on Saturday. Jameer Nelson delivered another strong performance with 22 points off the bench as Denver mostly kept it close down the stretch.
"Our guys played terrific. We got better. I hated walking into the locker room and telling those guys, obviously it's a loss, but they played extremely hard," interim coach Melvin Hunt said. "They're playing till the last tick on that clock, and that right there really makes me feel proud about my group."
Nelson has averaged 17.4 points while shooting 52.3 percent - including 24 of 47 from beyond the arc - over the last eight games. He scored 18 while making 4 of 5 of his 3s against Utah on Friday.
Jazz forward Derrick Favors has missed the last two games after his back locked up Friday. Favors, who scored seven points while shooting 2 of 9, had averaged 18.6 points and 61.7 percent from the field over his previous five games in the series.
"Backs are tricky things," Snyder said. "You always wonder if there's going to be something that makes it worse or aggravates it."
Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari sat out against the Trail Blazers with a shoulder injury, but he could be back Wednesday.
Denver claimed guard Ian Clark off waivers Saturday, two days after the Jazz released him. Clark averaged 1.9 points in 23 games with Utah.
The Nuggets are 8-7 since Hunt replaced Brian Shaw.
