KEY GAME INFORMATION
MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO is a fine ball-handler and creative passer, but it would be nice if he knocked down some shots . . . The Wolves are still trying to move KEVIN MARTIN's contract. He has devolved into more of a spot-up shooter . . . ANDREW WIGGINS should immediately contribute for this team. He'll be an elite defender, sooner rather than later, and should be able to produce points as well . . . Shoot-first combo guard MO WILLIAMS will head up the second unit . . . J.J. BAREA is also likely to be moved. He can still do the Mighty Mouse, sixth-man thing . . . On paper, CHASE BUDINGER is a great fit alongside Rubio due to his shooting and movement off the ball. He has to stay healthy though . . . Head coach Flip Saunders is high on ZACH LaVINE, a pure athlete who didn't do much of anything as a freshman at UCLA. FORWARDS: THADDEUS YOUNG is now the best player in this Timberwolves frontcourt. He'll lead the team in scoring and eats up rebounds as well . . . ANTHONY BENNETT should play some significant minutes with this team. He's a good scorer and will try to prove that he was just not ready to come into a bad situation last season . . . COREY BREWER has established himself as a solid defender on the wing who can knock down some threes and run the floor well . . . GLENN ROBINSON III should earn immediate minutes due to his defense . . . SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD gets new life with a new coaching regime coming in. He could be a crafty second-unit scorer . . . RONNY TURIAF is a big body who can protect the rim. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a big part of this offense without needing plays designed for him. He's arguably the top offensive rebounder in the NBA . . . GORGUI DIENG impressed late last season and should be ready for a bigger role. He and Pekovic might be in a timeshare by the season's second half.
NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: He's set to return from shin surgery, and the Pelicans need JRUE HOLIDAY to rescue this backcourt. He'll play as many minutes as he can handle . . . ERIC GORDON seems to be playing at half-speed. While his defense is atrocious, he's still an efficient scorer . . . Sixth man TYREKE EVANS will play solid minutes. He has the aggressiveness of an alpha, but he never developed a complete offensive game . . . The Pels seem just about done with AUSTIN RIVERS. He's still overmatched . . . RUSS SMITH could have a future as a scoring sixth man. He'll need injuries in front of him to crack this rotation . . . JIMMER FREDETTE can shoot, but can't stay on the court as arguably the league's biggest defensive liability. FORWARDS: The lone bright spot on this team, ANTHONY DAVIS is a bona fide star. He has improved defensively in space and as a rim protector, and his offensive game is coming along nicely . . . RYAN ANDERSON returns after missing most of last season with a back injury, which could potentially linger. If healthy, he'll play big minutes as a much-needed floor spacer . . . JOHN SALMONS will look to earn a rotation spot after being scooped up off waivers . . . After a few decent moments late last season, LUKE BABBITT will try to reinvent himself as a stretch-4. Unfortunately, he still can't guard anyone . . . DARIUS MILLER is still hanging around as a practice player. CENTERS: OMER ASIK provides a bodyguard for Anthony Davis. He'll also help clean up the many mistakes of this horrendous perimeter defense . . . ALEXIS AJINCA did enough late last season to warrant a look as the Pelicans No. 2 center . . . JEFF WITHEY can protect the rim, and might be able to carve out a role in his second season in head coach Monty Williams' system.

*Timberwolves-Pelicans Preview* ===============================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Minnesota (16-56) at New Orleans (38-34), 4:00 p.m. EDT

The New Orleans Pelicans' margin for error remains thin as they try to reach the postseason for the first time in four years. Tyreke Evans' recent play at point guard and Anthony Davis' continued dominance figures to give them a fighting chance, however.

New Orleans looks to capitalize on Sunday's matchup with the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves to remain in the hunt.

The Pelicans (38-34) snapped a four-game skid with a 102-88 win over Sacramento on Friday and still have a chance, albeit an unlikely one, to catch eighth-place Oklahoma City. They haven't made the playoffs since 2011, though they already have their highest win total since that season.

"There's a lot of new frontiers for us as far as dealing with the kind of pressure that we have right now to win all these games down the stretch. I think winning a game like this can be contagious," coach Monty Williams said. "I hope we can carry this over and be even better on Sunday."

Evans, a 27.5 percent career 3-point shooter, has scored 53 over his last two games while going 6 of 10 from deep.

"I think guys don't respect him (on the perimeter) because they don't think he can shoot," said Davis, who has averaged 27.9 points over his last 10 contests. "But like I said, he's been working on it."

Evans recorded 25 points and 10 assists against the Kings for his career-high 17th double-double. He has averaged 7.8 assists in 33 games at point guard with Jrue Holiday sidelined due to a right leg injury. He averaged 5.3 assists previously.

"I've had enough time to be at this position," said Evans, who is also averaging 16.8 points. "I'm just working at it every day, you know, just trying to make this team better and do what I got to do for us to win. If it's a scoring night, passing night, I've just got to be out there to help us."

The Timberwolves (16-56) remain at the bottom of the Western Conference and lost 120-110 at Houston on Friday despite the Rockets missing three starters.

Andrew Wiggins continued his excellent play, though, scoring 31. He has averaged 23.3 points on 51.6 percent shooting over his last four.

"He's playing at a really, really high level," coach Flip Saunders said. "He's doing things that I really didn't envision he'd get to as far advanced as he has gotten to at this point. It seems like every time we give him more responsibility, he continues to thrive."

Minnesota continues to be plagued by poor defense, though, letting Houston shoot 53.0 percent and match the league's season high with 20 3-pointers as it dropped to 4-24 when an opponent hits at least 10 shots from beyond the arc. The Timberwolves have yielded 109.5 points per game while dropping eight of 10.

A number of injuries has them without Ricky Rubio, Nikola Pekovic, Shabazz Muhammad, Kevin Garnett and Anthony Bennett. Kevin Martin, the team's leader with 20.2 points per game, is questionable after missing the last three contests with a strained left hamstring.

The Pelicans set a franchise record for points in a 139-91 home win on Nov. 14, shooting an NBA season-high and club-record 66.7 percent. They were 15 for 20 from beyond the arc.
