KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench.

*Lakers-Nets Preview* =====================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Los Angeles (19-52) at Brooklyn (31-40), 3:30 p.m. EDT

The Brooklyn Nets gave themselves a much-needed boost in the playoff race by beating one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

They'll try to get another by ending a lengthy home skid to one of the worst teams in the West.

The Nets will also try to match their longest win streak of the season Sunday at the expense of the lowly Los Angeles Lakers.

Brooklyn (31-40) stayed within one-half game of eighth-place Boston in the East with a 106-98 victory over Central Division-leading Cleveland on Friday. Bojan Bogdanovic, Jarrett Jack and Joe Johnson each had seven fourth-quarter points to help the Nets pull away.

"At this point for us, every game is important. I was glad, man, that we could just come out and get off to a great start and just sustain for 48 minutes," Johnson said. "That was the main thing, to just give ourselves a chance. This was definitely a much-needed victory."

Brooklyn has aided its postseason hopes by winning six of eight and has taken two of three at home following four consecutive defeats there.

"It's definitely satisfying to be able to take care of business at home," point guard Deron Williams told the team's official website. "We've talked a lot about it lately, what every game means to us."

The Nets now seek their first three-game win streak since Feb. 2-6, but they've dropped seven straight at home to the Lakers - their longest active home losing streak to any opponent.

Last season's defeat came to a 27-win Lakers team, and Los Angeles (19-52) is on its way to an even worse showing this season. The Lakers are 3-11 since the beginning of March, with two of those wins coming against a pair of the league's worst teams, Philadelphia and Minnesota.

They failed to sustain the momentum of Wednesday's overtime win at Minnesota, losing 94-83 on Friday to Atlantic Division champion Toronto to fall to 1-1 on their five-game road swing.

Jeremy Lin was a bright spot with a team-best 18 points despite dealing with a respiratory infection and is averaging 21.3 on 50.0 percent shooting in his last four games with starts in the past three.

Lin had 18 points and made 6 of 9 shots in the only other matchup with Brooklyn this season, a 114-105 loss Feb. 20.

"I think he's getting better compared to where he was (Friday)," coach Byron Scott said after practice Saturday. "We'll just have to wait to see how he feels."

The Nets have won their past two games against Los Angeles, and Johnson had 23 points in the latest meeting. Brook Lopez, who provided 22 points and 14 rebounds, has proved dangerous against the Lakers when healthy.

Lopez is averaging 27.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in his last four matchups but missed both last season because of injuries.

The Nets are seeking their first series sweep of the Lakers since 2005-06 and fifth since coming over from the ABA in 1976-77.
