|
| | | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set. | | PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD |

*Nuggets-Trail Blazers Preview* ===============================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Denver (28-45) at Portland (46-25), 10:00 p.m. EDT
The Portland Trail Blazers have put together back-to-back wins, but their play at times has brought reminders of the issues that led to the losing streak that preceded those victories.
Another matchup with the Denver Nuggets could bring out their best.
The Blazers look to win an eighth consecutive meeting with the visiting Nuggets on Saturday night.
Portland (46-25) ended a season-high five-game slide with Wednesday's 92-89 win over Utah, then defeated Phoenix 87-81 on Friday. The Blazers, though, needed to outscore the Jazz 37-24 in the fourth quarter before rallying from an eight-point deficit in the final quarter against the Suns.
LaMarcus Aldridge scored 12 of his 27 points in the fourth Friday for Portland, which shot just 40.4 percent overall and missed 10 of 18 from the free-throw line.
"I was just trying to find a rhythm, and then I made one shot, and then kind of played off of that," Aldridge said. "My teammates kept looking for me. I was just trying to make shots for us."
Nicolas Batum went 1 for 6 from the floor and scored five points in his return after missing the previous two with back problems. Chris Kaman had four and 11 rebounds off the bench after sitting out the last three with a shoulder injury.
Although the Blazers struggled for a majority of the contest, coach Terry Stotts won't complain about the victory. Portland is 2 1/2 games back of Houston for the Western Conference's third seed.
"I'm really proud of the way we continued to compete," Stotts said.
Portland has won seven straight meetings with the Nuggets since last losing April 14, 2013. Aldridge had a season-high 39 points and 11 rebounds before Robin Lopez scored with one second remaining to beat Denver 105-103 in the third and most recent meeting this season Dec. 2.
The Nuggets were coached in those matchups by Brian Shaw, who was fired March 3 and replaced with Melvin Hunt on an interim basis. Hunt is making his case for the full-time gig, going 8-6 since the switch after beating Utah 107-91 on Friday.
Ty Lawson and Jameer Nelson scored 18 points apiece for Denver (28-45), which has won two of three. Lawson also added nine assists.
"The kid is playing some of the best basketball I've seen him play," Hunt said of Lawson. "Ty set the tone, he set the table. He spoon-fed some people. He generated offense for different guys in different ways.
"That speed is special. It's a special weapon."
Danilo Gallinari scored 13 points despite playing through a sore right triceps. He's totaled 21 while shooting 7 of 24 from the field over the last two since netting a career-high 40 in Sunday's win at Orlando.
"The game just flowed," Hunt said.. "We weren't looking for certain things, just kind of played and found offense - the offense found us. We fell into a lot of things that I'd love to say I created, but it was kind of created from them playing hard."
Lawson has averaged 24.7 points in the three meetings with Portland this season, including a season-high 32 on Nov. 12 and 24 and 13 assists in the last matchup.
