KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.
WASHINGTON: GUARDS: JOHN WALL has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. His physical skills are off the chart, and now he's significantly cut back on head-scratching mistakes . . . It appears that BRADLEY BEAL is becoming the perfect running mate for Wall in the short and the long term. He continues to develop off-the-dribble skills to go along with his shooting. His broken wrist is expected to fully heal by late November . . . ANDRE MILLER is in more of a mentor role in Washington. He's 38 and averaged less than 17 minutes per night last season . . . GLEN RICE JR. tore up Summer League, but it's unlikely the gunner will become an efficient scorer . . . GARRETT TEMPLE gives them a defense-first option off the bench, but his playing time will be minimal again. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE takes Trevor Ariza's spot at the 3. He'll have much more space to work in, not that he's ever needed it . . . The Wizards will likely play it safe with NENE HILARIO's minutes during the regular season again. They'll need him fresh for the playoffs, and they have enough frontcourt depth to do it . . . Back surgery is going to keep MARTELL WEBSTER out for a huge chunk of the season. He's a question mark even after he returns . . . After a lost rookie season, OTTO PORTER should be able to break into this rotation, especially with Webster out . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES will provide some rebounding and energy behind Nen' . . . It's incredible that DREW GOODEN is still employed. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT made beautiful pick-and-roll music with Wall last year. There's no reason that shouldn't continue. Gortat is a fringe All-Star . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can mix it up for 20 minutes per night, especially against smaller 5's.

*Hornets-Wizards Preview* =========================

Charlotte (30-40) at Washington (40-32), 7:00 p.m. EDT

John Wall is concerned that the stumbling Washington Wizards could make only a brief appearance in the playoffs - and now his backcourt mate is again injured.

Just reaching the postseason figures to be difficult for the Charlotte Hornets with Al Jefferson not at 100 percent.

Wall and the Wizards may be without Bradley Beal as they try to end a four-game slide Friday night against the visiting Hornets.

Washington (40-32) had a five-game home win streak snapped with Wednesday's 103-101 loss to Indiana that began a stretch of five straight at the Verizon Center. Wall was spectacular with 34 points and six assists, but the Wizards blew a 10-point lead in the final 6 1/2 minutes.

"If we keep lapsing and doing these types of things, we will have an early exit from the playoffs," Wall said.

Beal made an early exit due to a sprained right ankle in the first quarter and did not return. The shooting guard has missed 18 games this season with wrist and toe injuries.

Embattled coach Randy Wittman didn't want to use Beal's latest injury as an excuse.

"Brad goes down; we gotta have some of our other guys step up," Wittman said. "That's it, sugarcoat it all you want, we gotta have other guys step up and play."

Charlotte (30-40) has dropped seven of nine after losing 91-88 at home to Brooklyn on Wednesday. The Hornets rallied from an eight-point, fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game before falling to remain outside the Eastern Conference's top eight teams.

"If we continue to play like we're playing, not very disciplined, we won't make it because these other teams coming up are all fighting for our spot too so they're going to be hungry as well," guard Gerald Henderson said.

Henderson and Jefferson each scored 23 points. Jefferson added 10 rebounds for his team-high 21st double-double while playing through a sore knee.

"I've always been the type of guy that I feel like if I can go, if I can play through pain, I'm going to go because one thing I have learned is you can't fool yourself," Jefferson said.

The Hornets have seen top scorer Kemba Walker miss 20 games this season due to injury, including all three meetings with the Wizards. Charlotte is 2-1 in those games, though Washington ended a five-game slide in the series with a 95-69 rout March 9.

Hornets starting forward Cody Zeller suffered a right shoulder sprain in that contest, and has missed seven of the eight games since. Marvin Williams has started in his place, averaging 9.0 points despite shooting 36.4 percent and 6.5 rebounds.

Wall, second in the league with 9.8 assists per game, and Walker will match up for the first time this season. Wall is averaging an NBA-best 95.0 touches with Walker third at 93.9.

The Hornets' growing frustration has been evident. Walker picked up Charlotte's fourth technical foul in its last five games in the loss Wednesday.

"We have to go to Washington and have everybody ready so we make less mistakes and we don't worry about the officials and stuff, we worry about playing better," coach Steve Clifford said.
