KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.
TORONTO: GUARDS: DeMAR DeROZAN has evolved from raw athlete into dangerous scorer. He gets to the line frequently enough that he's virtually guaranteed a 20-PPG average . . . There's some long-term worry with KYLE LOWRY. His stocky body type leaves little room for error on those contested threes he hits, and there's some question of motivation now that he's been paid. But he was so good last season, that the chances of a fall-off seem low . . . Along with being the primary back-up at point guard, GREIVIS VASQUEZ will play alongside Lowry at times to take ball-handling pressure off of him . . . LOUIS WILLIAMS should be closer to 100 percent in his second season off ACL surgery, though he's looking at a fourth guard role in Toronto. FORWARDS: AMIR JOHNSON will lead the rotation at the 4, providing rim protection, rebounding and hustle baskets . . . He's streaky, but uber dunker TERRENCE ROSS is reinventing himself as a three-point shooter . . . Stretch 4 PATRICK PATTERSON has added a corner three to supplement a below-the-rim game . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH's spastic style is a thing of beauty . . . JAMES JOHNSON returns to Toronto. He's more versatile than his doughy frame would suggest . . . Undersized big CHUCK HAYES will throw his weight around for 15 minutes a night . . . Draft night stunner BRUNO CABOCLO is likely headed for the D-League . . . Ditto DeANDRE DANIELS . . . Not too long ago multiple teams fought over LANDRY FIELDS, but those days are long gone. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS still has to add some nuance to his game (such as making physical contact with a defender when he sets a screen) if he's going to get full-time minutes. But the big upside is still there . . . LUCAS NOGUEIRA, a 2013 first-rounder picked up from Atlanta, gives them a rim protector . . . GREG STIEMSMA was added in early September to provide depth at the center position.

*Lakers-Raptors Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Los Angeles (19-51) at Toronto (42-30), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Toronto Raptors are close to clinching another division title, though their recent play hasn't been encouraging with the playoffs on the horizon.

Dwane Casey looks for better defense from his club Friday night when it hosts the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Raptors (42-30) clinched a postseason berth Wednesday by virtue of losses by Boston and Charlotte despite their 116-103 home defeat against Chicago, their second loss in six days to the Bulls. They'll clinch the Atlantic for a second straight year with a win or a Celtics loss Friday to the New York Knicks.

Toronto could have surpassed the Bulls for third place with a victory but instead trails by 1 1/2 games. Though the Raptors are all but assured of the division crown and no worse than the No. 4 seed, they still must finish with the fourth-best record or better for home-court advantage in the first round. They own a two-game lead over fifth-place and likely playoff opponent Washington.

Despite losing Game 7 at home last year to the Brooklyn Nets in the first round, the potential advantage could be crucial given Toronto's 18-17 road record, which includes losses in nine of 11. The Raptors, whose only second-round playoff appearance came in 2001, are 5-13 since Feb. 21.

"Our confidence is still high," said DeMar DeRozan, who has averaged 25.7 points in his last three against the Lakers. "All we need is that one game to get ourselves going."

Toronto has allowed 106.1 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting over its last 15 and let the Bulls shoot 60.8 percent Wednesday while only forcing eight turnovers.

"There's not a lot of defense being played in that situation," Casey said.

Kyle Lowry sat out for the third time in four games due to back spasms. Toronto fell to 2-4 without him, though Greivis Vasquez scored 22 and matched a career high with six 3-pointers while starting at point guard.

The Lakers (19-51) have won two of three, beating the league's two worst teams - Philadelphia and Minnesota. They've been sparked offensively by Jeremy Lin and Jordan Clarkson. Lin has averaged 22.3 points over his last three contests, while Clarkson has totaled 50 in his last two.

Clarkson hit two free throws with 0.3 seconds left in overtime to clinch a 101-99 win over the Timberwolves on Wednesday, the Lakers' third victory in 23 road games.

Clarkson, who scored 20, was discouraged by his 6-for-16 shooting and six turnovers, however.

"I think I took a few steps back," the rookie said. "I didn't take care of the ball well, held the ball a little too much on the offensive end. I've just got to keep growing, man, go back and watch the film, learn from it."

Coach Byron Scott could return to the bench after missing the last two games following the death of his mother. Assistant coach Paul Pressey has served as acting coach.

Los Angeles is 28-8 in the all-time series and won 129-122 in overtime on Nov. 30, getting 31 points and 12 assists from the since-injured Kobe Bryant. Lowry scored 29, though he was 10 for 28.
