|
| | | LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: Head coach Doc Rivers pretty much hands the offense over to CHRIS PAUL, who is very much in his prime. He has a chance to lead the NBA in assists and steals again . . . He was banged up during the regular season, but J.J. REDICK fit nicely next to Paul when healthy . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD will reprise his sixth-man role. He can still fill it up, though he'll lose a bit of playing time if Redick stays healthy . . . JORDAN FARMAR is still hanging around L.A., this time to back up Paul. He'll run point for the second unit . . . C.J. WILCOX is arguably the best shooter in the rookie class, but he's not guaranteed to grab a rotation spot. FORWARDS: He still has flaws in his game, but BLAKE GRIFFIN continues to evolve into a more complete player. His improved shooting, both mid-range and at the line, is a testament to that . . . The Clippers failed to land an upgrade at small forward, so MATT BARNES might be the starter by default again. He's a good glue guy, though his streaky shooting is a frustration . . . The Clippers retained GLEN DAVIS in free agency. "Big Baby" can do some damage against opposing second units during the regular season. CENTERS: Rivers made DeANDRE JORDAN into a full-time player last season. He's a rim protector and rebounder who has made some strides defending in space, but there's a reason the Clippers spent on another big man . . . SPENCER HAWES gives them a different look at the 5-spot, and he can play alongside Jordan as a floor-spacer as well. | | PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel. |

*Clippers-76ers Preview* ========================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Los Angeles (47-25) at Philadelphia (18-54), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Things couldn't have gone much better for the Los Angeles Clippers in the opener of a three-game road trip against the NBA's worst team.
They would appear to have another favorable matchup against the lowly Philadelphia 76ers.
Los Angeles goes for a sixth consecutive victory and seventh in a row over the 76ers on Friday night.
The Clippers (47-25) have outscored opponents by an average of 14.0 points during their run after blowing out New York 111-80 on Wednesday. DeAndre Jordan finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Chris Paul dished out 16 assists before Los Angeles' starting five received some well-deserved rest in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach.
Jordan made all seven shots to raise his field-goal percentage to 71.3, the NBA's highest mark since Wilt Chamberlain set the record at 72.7 percent in 1972-73.
"I knew we had to come out with the right mindset and intensity to win the basketball game," Jordan said. "You can't play teams' records, you've got to play the game and take care of business."
The Clippers, who shot 56.4 percent for their second-highest mark this season, outscored the Knicks 42-18 in the paint and 17-0 in transition. They surrendered a season-low 33 first-half points.
"Our pace was really good and part of that was because our defense was so good in the first half," J.J. Redick told the team's official website. "We limited them, and when we can get out after stops and the move, we're pretty good."
Los Angeles has been pretty good against Philadelphia, too. The Clippers have taken the last six in the series by an average of 23.2 points, including a 127-91 rout on Jan. 3.
Paul had 24 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds in 30 minutes to lead six players in double figures for Los Angeles, which had 30 fast-break points to the 76ers' eight.
Philadelphia (18-54) has won three of five, though each of those victories came against teams with losing records. The 76ers beat Denver 99-85 on Wednesday to salvage the finale of a three-game road trip.
Nerlens Noelhad 14 points, 15 rebounds, four steals and four blocks and Robert Covington scored a career high-tying 25 of the bench. Noel is averaging 15.3 points over the last eight games, and he leads all first-year players with 8.0 boards, 1.8 steals and 2.0 blocks per game.
"People have to start talking about him for rookie of the year," coach Brett Brown said of Noel. "You don't repetitively bang out these types of performances and produce the numbers he's producing. He's a complete game changer. He's a complete defensive presence when he's lurking to block shots. He continues to improve."
Covington, who scored 21 the night before against Sacramento, has shot 11 of 17 from 3-point range over the last two games. He scored 15 points in a 6:16 span in the third quarter Wednesday.
"They were just leaving me open," Covington said. "My teammates have confidence in me, I have confidence in myself and I just let it fly."
Covington scored 23 while making 4 of 7 from long distance against the Clippers in January.
Redick had 17 in that game, and he's averaging 21.8 in his last 11. The former Duke star has made 36 consecutive foul shots and 68 of 69 since Jan. 5 for the NBA's best percentage (98.6) during that time.
