KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.

*Lakers-Grizzlies Preview* ==========================

By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer

Los Angeles (16-44) at Memphis (43-17), 8:00 p.m. EDT

The Memphis Grizzlies got a mental boost as well as one in the standings with a thrilling win over their closest pursuer in the Southwest Division.

They'll try to keep heading in the right direction by ending a rare home losing streak Friday night with a victory over the lowly Los Angeles Lakers.

Memphis (43-17) had dropped three of four and allowed Houston to get within 1 1/2 games in the division before a 102-100 road win over the Rockets on Wednesday. Marc Gasol provided the winning shot with 0.1 seconds left and finished with a team-best 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting.

Zach Randolph contributed 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists after missing Tuesday's 93-82 loss to Utah because of an illness.

"It was huge for us mentally because we hadn't been playing to our level of expectations," point guard Mike Conley said. "We've lost some games in the past few weeks that we feel like we shouldn't have lost. To lose (Tuesday) night in Utah and to beat a very good team in Houston that we know is going to be there in the playoff standings, it means a lot."

Conley was 6 of 9 from the field for 17 points after shooting a combined 30.6 percent during the team's 1-3 slump.

The Grizzlies will next try to avoid a third straight home defeat. The only other time they've lost consecutive games in Memphis since the beginning of 2014 was a three-game skid Dec. 19-26.

A visit from the Lakers (16-44), losers in 13 of 14 on the road, would appear to provide a great opportunity to end the current skid. Memphis has won five straight over Los Angeles for its longest winning streak in the history of this series.

The three matchups this season, though, have been fairly competitive with those games decided by a combined 14 points. Most recently, Memphis came away with a 109-106 victory Jan. 2 when now-injured Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant missed a 3-pointer as time expired. The Grizzlies' last two home wins in the series have been decided by five points apiece.

Los Angeles is heading into this visit having lost three in a row, including an 0-2 start to a season-high five-game trip. The Lakers led Miami by three with 4 1/2 minutes remaining Wednesday but were outscored 15-6 down the stretch in a 100-94 loss.

The Lakers' last three defeats have been by an average of 4.7 points.

"We gave ourselves an opportunity again, put ourselves in a position, but at the end of the day, we didn't take care of business," coach Byron Scott said. "... The end, as I told the guys, that's been killing us all season long."

Jeremy Lin had 12 points after scoring a combined 43 in his prior two games. He had 20 points in the most recent game against Memphis and has averaged 15.3 while shooting 54.8 percent in the three meetings this season.

Conley is averaging 21.3 points in his past four games against the Lakers.

It's unclear if Los Angeles' Nick Young will return after missing the last five games with a sore knee.
