KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm.
INDIANA: GUARDS: Indy couldn't find an upgrade on GEORGE HILL this offseason, and losing Lance Stephenson and Paul George means Hill will have to play a more traditional ball-handling role this year . . . RODNEY STUCKEY's combo-guard skills probably make him the best fit alongside Hill. Whether he's up to the task defensively will decide whether he's a full-time player or a time-share guy . . . C.J. MILES will help fill the need for perimeter shooting, especially with Paul George out . . . They have a solid veteran back-up in C.J. WATSON. He's the closest thing to a pure point guard on this roster, and is a bigger need for the second unit than the starting five. FORWARDS: PAUL GEORGE was poised for an MVP run, but he'll now miss the season after a compound leg fracture during Team USA practice. He's no guarantee to ever return at full strength . . . DAVID WEST's floor-spacing, mid-range game is key in this system . . . He was a dud in his first season with the Pacers, but Indy might have no choice but to plug LUIS SCOLA into their thin frontcourt rotation . . . DAMJAN RUDEZ is a stretch-4 with three-point range. He could push Scola for a rotation spot . . . The Pacers are hoping SOLOMON HILL is ready to be a second-unit glue guy . . . LAVOY ALLEN brings size and opposable thumbs . . . They seemingly have little use for CHRIS COPELAND after signing Rudez. CENTERS: As strange as it seems, ROY HIBBERT might benefit most from the departure of Lance Stephenson. The big man was referring to Stephenson when he talked about selfish play. Of course, Hibbert's atrocious performance late last season is a problem in and of itself . . . IAN MAHINMI has size and six fouls to give.

*Bulls-Pacers Preview* ======================

By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer

Chicago (38-23) at Indiana (26-34), 7:00 p.m. EDT

After ending a successful homestand with an impressive comeback victory, the injury-riddled Chicago Bulls would like to carry that momentum out on the road.

The Bulls play five of their next six away from home starting Friday night against the Indiana Pacers, who have joined the playoff hunt with their best stretch of the season.

Missing Derrick Rose, Taj Gibson and Jimmy Butler, Chicago (39-23) turned to E'Twaun Moore in Thursday's 108-105 win over Oklahoma City.

The fourth-year guard, who had averaged 1.9 points over his previous 39 games, scored 19 and drained a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining to help Chicago overcome Russell Westbrook's 43 points and close its seven-game homestand with five victories.

"The way E'Twaun competed on every play, that goes a long way," coach Tom Thibodeau said. "I thought we had a number of guys step up."

Nikola Mirotic scored a team-high 26 and continues to emerge as an offensive force for the Bulls. He has averaged 26.0 points in his last three games, including a career-high 29 in Sunday's 96-86 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Mike Dunleavy had 21 points against the Thunder in one of his best games since returning from injury Feb. 10, and Pau Gasol added 21 points and 12 rebounds for his league-leading 40th double-double.

Gasol hasn't enjoyed that same level of success against Indiana, matching a season low with six rebounds in each matchup with the Pacers this season. He scored 20 points in a 92-90 win Dec. 29, but managed only 12 in a 99-90 loss to Indiana on Nov. 15.

The Bulls have won nine of 12 but haven't played on the road since losing at Detroit on Feb. 20. They have dropped four of their last six away from United Center.

Indiana (26-34) has won nine of 11 and four in a row at home, a hot spell that has left the Pacers only a half-game behind Charlotte for eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Indiana was 12th on Jan. 31 after losing nine of 11.

The Pacers trounced New York 105-82 on Wednesday for their third straight win overall.

"We're just playing basketball the right way now," said George Hill, who scored a team-high 21. "I'm just trying to be aggressive and lead this team."

Roy Hibbert was out due to a scheduled day of rest, but expects to play Friday. Paul George will not be in the lineup, although the Pacers have begun to anticipate his return after the two-time All-Star practiced this past week.

Playing without George for the entire season hasn't left coach Frank Vogel feeling much pity for the Bulls' current injury troubles.

"We didn't make excuses when we had guys out. Now we're playing teams with guys out. That's the NBA," Vogel said. "I don't really spend a lot of time thinking about it other than just trying to win the next game."

Indiana's defense has held opponents to 94.4 points per game during the 9-2 stretch while scoring 101.2. The Pacers averaged 95.0 points over their previous 49 contests.

They've held the Bulls to 90.0 points per game in their last six matchups, but have managed to score just 91.3 in that same span.

"They're well-coached," C.J. Miles told the Pacers' official website about the Bulls. "They play hard. They have guys that are capable of making shots and plays. We have to come in like we came in (Wednesday)... and be ready to go out there and focus."
