KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.
MIAMI: GUARDS: He's a shell of his former self, but the Heat will have to squeeze more regular-season minutes out of DWYANE WADE. His effectiveness could depend on whether or not he finally develops a three-point shot . . . The point guard situation is getting muddied, but the Heat dug deep to re-sign MARIO CHALMERS. He'll top the PG depth chart again . . . NORRIS COLE is likely too small and too erratic to ever be a starter, but he'll continue to play solid minutes with the second unit . . . The Heat seemed to grab SHABAZZ NAPIER on draft night because he's a LeBron James favorite. Now that James is gone, the rookie could be the odd man out in the point guard rotation. He'll have to overcome subpar measurables. FORWARDS: LUOL DENG is most certainly not LeBron James, and he won't fill anything resembling James' new role. He does give them a strong role player, a defensive stopper and secondary scorer . . . JOSH McROBERTS will facilitate the offense at times and generally serve as a floor-spacing, stretch-4. Miami is built to go small with him and Chris Bosh up front . . . DANNY GRANGER is trying to reinvent himself after an injury-filled couple of seasons. He can play both forward spots and might fit best as a stretch-4 in head coach Erik Spoelstra's system . . . UDONIS HASLEM is essentially a mascot during the regular season . . . JAMES ENNIS could break into the rotation later this season. He was tremendous in Summer League play. CENTERS: CHRIS BOSH is the best player on this team by a significant margin. He'll be the focal point of the offense most nights and should flirt with the 20-10 numbers he used to put up in Toronto . . . CHRIS ANDERSEN will often pair with Bosh in the frontcourt, taking some of the defensive heat off Bosh against bigger lineups.

Because of this information, no power rating or computer score edges are posted for this game.

*Lakers-Heat Preview* =====================

Los Angeles (16-43) at Miami (26-33), 8:00 p.m. EDT

(AP) - To say the Miami Heat have been presented with a new problem every day since last season ended, that would be an exaggeration. But not by much.

Yet, somehow, the Heat find themselves still in the mix for an Eastern Conference playoff spot, hanging on to the No. 7 position with 23 games left starting with Wednesday night's home matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.

For the Heat (26-33), strange has become normal. Players who weren't in Miami when the season began now find themselves in key roles, arguably the team's most vital player saw his season end after a major health scare threatened his life, and a roster that needed rebuilding after LeBron James left last summer has needed constantly, almost-daily rejiggering since.

"This year," guard Dwyane Wade said, "there's been no normal. Not for us."

Of Miami's starting five on opening night, only Wade and Luol Deng remain in the Heat mix. Norris Cole and Shawne Williams were traded and Chris Bosh's season is over because of blood clots on a lung.

Nearly two dozen starting lineups have been used, four players left in a trade, two players were acquired in that same trade, two players were waived, two players have had seasons end because of injury or illness and finally four others have been signed to either free-agent or 10-day contracts.

"Never seen anything like this," forward Udonis Haslem said. "I doubt very many people have ever seen anything like this."

Miami's starting center, Hassan Whiteside, got turned down by basically every other NBA team but has essentially become an overnight success with the Heat. The leading scorer in Monday's 115-98 win over Phoenix, Tyler Johnson, entered the night with 64 points in his NBA career. The team's two most recent additions, Henry Walker and Michael Beasley, are playing with no guarantees past next week.

Miami's perpetually changing playbook is still getting tweaked now that the Heat are more up-tempo after landing Goran Dragic from Phoenix on Feb. 19, the same day team officials were learning that Bosh's season was almost certainly over.

"You wake up and you're on eggshells," Wade said. "I think everybody is, because something might happen."

Dragic's play has been up and down in six games with Miami, but his success against Los Angeles (16-43) could prove useful. He's averaged 20.5 points in four contests against the Lakers this season, including a 24-point, nine-rebound effort on Jan. 19.

Los Angeles has lost two in a row after a rare three-game winning streak, falling 104-103 at Charlotte on Tuesday. Jeremy Lin scored a game-high 23 points, and Nick Young missed his third consecutive game with a sore left knee.

"We come out lackadaisical and the other team comes out with more aggressiveness," coach Byron Scott said. "It takes us three, four or five minutes to get back into it. And we don't have that room for error."

Los Angeles' win at Utah last Wednesday snapped a 12-game road losing streak, but the Lakers have lost their last six in Miami. They fell at home to the Heat 78-75 on Jan. 13.

Ending that skid in South Florida won't be easy. Los Angeles is an NBA-worst 1-9 on the second of back-to-backs.
