KEY GAME INFORMATION
UTAH: GUARDS: TREY BURKE is likely the lead guard here, though it's really by default. He doesn't have the athleticism to make a lot of plays in the lane, and will have to rely on difficult shot-making . . . He continues to steadily improve, and there could be a bigger role available for ALEC BURKS. He'll have to develop a more consistent three-point shot before he really breaks out though . . . DANTE EXUM is an electrifying athlete, but he's making an enormous jump from essentially high school ball in Australia. He could be a gem in the long run, but don't expect him to do much as a rookie . . . TOURE' MURRY will likely play some garbage minutes. FORWARDS: He ascended to the alpha role in Utah, but GORDON HAYWARD had some struggles with the extra defensive attention. He should improve somewhat, as he knows what's coming, and has added a runner to his repertoire . . . DERRICK FAVORS will play more at the 4-spot this season, and he has the strength to power his way to easy baskets. He's a potential double-double guy . . . RODNEY HOOD had an up-and-down year at Duke despite his physical gifts. He has an NBA-caliber combination of size and athleticism, but right now he's a streaky shooter with a lot of rough edges on his game . . . TREVOR BOOKER is a solid second-unit big man, a defensive bruiser and good screener on offense . . . JEREMY EVANS can dunk, but provides little else . . . STEVE NOVAK will never be a full-time player, but he's still one of the league's elite shooters. CENTERS: He was disappointing last season, but ENES KANTER still has some upside on the offensive end of the floor. How he and Favors will mesh is yet to be seen . . . RUDY GOBERT is a shot-blocking fool, but still ultra-raw
MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system.

*Jazz-Grizzlies Preview* ========================

By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer

Utah (23-35) at Memphis (42-16), 8:00 p.m. EDT

A matchup with one of the league's worst teams came at just the right time for the Memphis Grizzlies' sputtering offense.

Tuesday night's matchup with visiting Utah figures to be more challenging given the Jazz's defensive progress.

The Grizzlies had averaged 89.2 points on 40.7 percent shooting during a 2-3 stretch prior to shooting a season-best 59.4 percent in a 101-97 win at Minnesota on Saturday. The Timberwolves own the NBA's worst field-goal defense (48.7 percent).

Marc Gasol scored 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting after being held to 14 or fewer in five of six. Memphis tallied 52 points in the paint and its bench was 14 of 22.

"It's been a tough, long week," said Gasol, who has averaged 21.3 points in his last four against the Jazz. "We finished 3-2 for the week. I wish it was different, 4-1 or 5-0 would've been better of course, but that's the way it went, and on to the next week."

Memphis (42-16), which holds a 1 1/2-game edge over Houston for the Southwest Division lead and second place in the Western Conference, is 32-3 when scoring at least 97 points.

The Grizzlies have been turnover-prone recently, committing a season high-tying 24 versus Minnesota after being charged with 17 and 16 in losses to Sacramento and the Clippers. They had averaged 12.8 previously.

"Their hearts are in the right place, they're playing hard, but we're just making some mistakes," coach Dave Joerger said. "We've got to get better."

Mike Conley hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 30 seconds left but was 5 for 13 and is 11 of 38 over his last three. He has averaged 21.3 points on 53.2 percent shooting in his last three meetings with Utah, however.

Zach Randolph's impact was also minimal as he finished with seven points, though he has scored 22.7 per game in his last three home matchups with the Jazz.

The Jazz (23-35) have limited opponents to 85.9 points per game on 39.1 percent shooting while winning six of eight. In that stretch, they held Dallas, Portland and San Antonio - which all average at least 100.6 points - to 81.3 per game.

Utah forced 23 turnovers and restricted Milwaukee to 39.2 percent shooting in an 82-75 victory Saturday, its second straight.

Rudy Gobert has averaged 3.5 blocks during the team's 6-2 run, while undrafted rookie Elijah Millsap has 2.1 steals per game in that span.

"Our whole team is evolving (defensively)," coach Quin Snyder said. "It's no one guy. It becomes infectious. Guys start having pride in that. I think we're seeing some of that evolving."

Trey Burke had 23 points and six assists Saturday and has scored 19-plus in three of four.

The Jazz have failed to win three consecutive games this season despite winning two in a row five times previously. They were limited to 90.4 points per game in the games immediately following those winning streaks.

Memphis has won eight of 10 in the series but split two meetings earlier this season. Utah won 97-91 in Memphis on Dec. 22, while Gasol scored 23 in a 100-90 road victory on Feb. 4.
