|
| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system. | | MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO is a fine ball-handler and creative passer, but it would be nice if he knocked down some shots . . . The Wolves are still trying to move KEVIN MARTIN's contract. He has devolved into more of a spot-up shooter . . . ANDREW WIGGINS should immediately contribute for this team. He'll be an elite defender, sooner rather than later, and should be able to produce points as well . . . Shoot-first combo guard MO WILLIAMS will head up the second unit . . . J.J. BAREA is also likely to be moved. He can still do the Mighty Mouse, sixth-man thing . . . On paper, CHASE BUDINGER is a great fit alongside Rubio due to his shooting and movement off the ball. He has to stay healthy though . . . Head coach Flip Saunders is high on ZACH LaVINE, a pure athlete who didn't do much of anything as a freshman at UCLA. FORWARDS: THADDEUS YOUNG is now the best player in this Timberwolves frontcourt. He'll lead the team in scoring and eats up rebounds as well . . . ANTHONY BENNETT should play some significant minutes with this team. He's a good scorer and will try to prove that he was just not ready to come into a bad situation last season . . . COREY BREWER has established himself as a solid defender on the wing who can knock down some threes and run the floor well . . . GLENN ROBINSON III should earn immediate minutes due to his defense . . . SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD gets new life with a new coaching regime coming in. He could be a crafty second-unit scorer . . . RONNY TURIAF is a big body who can protect the rim. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a big part of this offense without needing plays designed for him. He's arguably the top offensive rebounder in the NBA . . . GORGUI DIENG impressed late last season and should be ready for a bigger role. He and Pekovic might be in a timeshare by the season's second half. |

*Grizzlies-Timberwolves Preview* ================================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Memphis (41-15) at Minnesota (13-43), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Memphis Grizzlies can hardly afford to get bogged down in a lengthy losing streak in a competitive Southwest Division and will try to end their brief skid in a visit to Western Conference's last-place team.
The Grizzlies, though, couldn't pull out a road win over the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this month and will try for a better result Saturday night.
Memphis (41-16) has seen its 3 1/2-game lead over Houston in the division dip to 1 1/2 after back-to-back losses and four consecutive wins by the Rockets. It's also just 3 1/2 games ahead of third-place Dallas.
The Grizzlies had one of their lowest-scoring efforts of the season Friday, a 97-79 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Clippers. With 20 points, Zach Randolph was the only Memphis player to score more than 12.
Memphis had won 16 of 19 before its two-game skid, and the Grizzlies' drop in scoring production has finally caught up to them. They've averaged 90.5 points in their last eight games - 10.8 fewer than in their first 49 - a stretch that began with a 90-89 loss in Minnesota on Feb. 6.
"We're having major problems scoring the basketball," coach David Joerger said. "We need to have guys step up and make shots. We've got to get the ball moving. We've got to get screening and we've got to get cutting."
Memphis blew a seven-point lead in the last 2 1/2 minutes at Minnesota as its season-best eight-game win streak ended. Ricky Rubio led the his team's rally by scoring eight of his 17 points in the final 1:47, including the go-ahead free throws with 10.2 seconds remaining.
Minnesota (13-44) had won five of eight before failing to take advantage of short-handed Chicago in a 96-89 road defeat Friday. The Bulls were missing stars Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol, then had Taj Gibson leave with a sprained left ankle in the first quarter.
They pulled away for good by scoring seven of the game's final 10 points.
"We fought against a good team on the road and had a chance to win," Rubio said. "You've got to move on and go to the next (game)."
The Timberwolves will try to bounce back with a season-high third consecutive home win and a third straight win over Memphis at home.
The teams have split their last six overall meetings.
Andrew Wiggins had a team-best 18 points in the latest home win versus Memphis and is averaging 20.8 points on 50.8 percent shooting in his last four games.
Marc Gasol had a career-high 32 points - later matched - in Memphis' 105-101 home victory over the Timberwolves on Oct. 29, and Randolph contributed 25 on 12-of-16 shooting. Gasol had 15 points in the loss in Minnesota and Randolph was held to a season-low six.
Veteran forward Kevin Garnett could play Saturday after resting in Chicago. He had five points, eight rebounds and two blocks in 19 minutes in his emotional return to Minnesota on Wednesday, a 97-77 victory over Washington.
