KEY GAME INFORMATION
MILWAUKEE: GUARDS: The Bucks hope to fill a gaping hole at point guard with a committee approach. BRANDON KNIGHT, an undersized, athletically-overmatched combo guard, will get first crack at the job . . . Ex-Laker KENDALL MARSHALL, a heady floor general who can't shoot or defend, is an option as well . . . KHRIS MIDDLETON, a spot-up shooter, has a good chance to retain his starting job . . . New head coach Jason Kidd will try to rebuild O.J. MAYO, who could emerge as a serviceable sixth man, but looked wholly disinterested last season . . . The arrival of Marshall likely pushes NATE WOLTERS out of the rotation. He could be ticketed for the D-League at some point this season. FORWARDS: JABARI PARKER becomes the new face of this franchise. He can score as well as facilitate the offense. The only real question is what kind of defensive effort he puts in . . . GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO will be used at both forward spots and both guard spots as well. The Greek Freak is raw, but the Bucks will expand his role . . . After a season in Larry Drew's doghouse, the coaching change should bode well for ERSAN ILYASOVA. He's likely looking at a part-time role . . . JOHN HENSON will play some 4 and 5, though his lack of an offensive game limits his appeal . . . JOHNNY O'BRYANT III might push for a rotation spot once he returns from a knee injury in late November. He's one of the few big men on this team who can score around the basket . . . If DAMIEN INGLIS comes over, he's looking at a D-League stint. CENTERS: Kidd is a LARRY SANDERS believer, so after a season filled with injuries and knucklehead behavior, he'll have every chance to bounce back. When he's in the right place, he's an elite rim protector . . . Larry Drew favorite ZAZA PACHULIA is looking at a traditional back-up role now that Drew is gone.
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.

*Bucks-Lakers Preview* ======================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Milwaukee (32-25) at Los Angeles (15-41), 10:30 p.m. EDT

While their new point guard helped the Milwaukee Bucks avoid matching their worst skid of the season, the Los Angeles Lakers' emerging playmaker has them looking to equal their longest winning streak.

Michael Carter-Williams tries to guide the Bucks to another win when they open a four-game western trip Friday night against Jordan Clarkson and the Lakers, who seek a third straight victory.

After missing his first three games with Milwaukee because of a right foot strain, Carter-Williams made an immediate impact with seven points and eight assists in Wednesday's 104-88 home win over Philadelphia.

The 2013-14 Rookie of the Year averaged 15.0 points, 7.4 assists and 6.2 rebounds in 41 games with the 76ers before getting shipped to the Bucks (32-25) in a three-team deal completed minutes before last Thursday's trade deadline.

"(My teammates) make it easy for me," said Carter-Williams, who was limited to 17 minutes. "My job is just to run the plays and find them and get into the lane. It's fun. I'm having a great time. (My foot) felt good."

Milwaukee averaged 82.0 points and shot 39.9 percent while playing without a true point guard over its previous three games. Carter-Williams helped changed that as the Bucks averted their first three-game losing streak since Nov. 29-Dec. 3 by shooting 53.7 percent.

Guard Khris Middleton continued his strong play with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting. He's scored 17.2 per game over his last six and made 54.1 percent from the field in his past 15.

The Bucks, one-half game behind fifth-place Washington in the Eastern Conference, will now try to avoid a third straight road defeat as they face the Pacific Division-worst Lakers (15-41).

Following a 1-16 stretch, Los Angeles won its second straight and snapped a franchise-worst 11-game road skid as Clarkson had a career-high 22 points in a 100-97 victory over Utah on Wednesday. The injury-ravaged Lakers haven't won three in a row since Dec. 9-14.

Clarkson, a 2014 second-round draft pick, has averaged 15.0 points on 54.3 percent shooting over his last four games.

"I'm just trying to prove people wrong," he said. "I've got a chip on my shoulder every time I step on the court."

Clarkson and Jeremy Lin will handle the point guard duties after reserve Ronnie Price underwent season-ending elbow surgery Wednesday. Shooting guard Nick Young, who has averaged 19.3 points in his last three meetings with Milwaukee, could return after missing one game due to swelling in his knee.

Los Angeles has scored 107.7 per game in the last three after averaging 93.2 over its previous 15. The Lakers also allowed their lowest point total in eight games while forcing a season-high 21 turnovers versus Utah.

They'll try to keep playing well defensively against the Bucks, who shot 50.0 percent and hit 11 of 26 from 3-point range en route to a 113-105 overtime win over visiting Los Angeles on Feb. 4.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 25 and O.J. Mayo and Middleton added 21 apiece. Los Angeles forward Carlos Boozer finished with a season-high 28 points, and his 18.6 career average against the Bucks is his highest versus any East opponent.

The Lakers have dropped four in a row and six of seven in the series.
