KEY GAME INFORMATION
DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder.
ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation.

*Mavericks-Hawks Preview* =========================

Dallas (39-20) at Atlanta (44-12), 7:30 p.m. EDT

Mike Budenholzer's ball-sharing, pass-happy scheme has the Atlanta Hawks in terrific harmony.

Despite their recent surge, the Dallas Mavericks aren't enjoying much tranquility.

The Hawks will try to complete their first season sweep of the Mavericks in 11 years Wednesday night at Philips Arena.

Budenholzer said he likes seeing his players get on each other when someone strays from his lessons of court spacing, pick-and-rolls and pass after pass.

Long known for isolation basketball, the Hawks (44-12) had to change their ways when Budenholzer was hired from the San Antonio Spurs prior to last season. Now there is balance, and success.

The Hawks hold 7 1/2-game lead over Toronto atop the Eastern Conference, and Budenholzer smiled Tuesday when talking about players policing themselves when there is a "lapse" in his system.

"I think it stands out with our players when we are not moving the ball the way we expect to and the way we want to," Budenholzer said. "They get on each other and they get frustrated and I think that's probably one of the best signs is when we don't move it the way we want to, the way we're expecting of each other, it stands out.

"From an implementation standpoint, when they start coaching themselves, when they start coaching each other, that's a huge step and obviously we'll keep coaching them too. But there's nothing like hearing it from your teammate."

The Hawks haven't lost more than two straight games, but they're trying to recover from a midseason downturn that followed a team-record, 19-game winning streak.

Atlanta lost four of seven, including an ugly 105-80 defeat to the Raptors on Friday, but bounced back with a 97-86 win at Milwaukee two days later.

Five Hawks average at least 11.8 points with Paul Millsap leading the way at 16.9.

"It's a fun way to play basketball," Kyle Korver said. "Whoever is on the court, you feel like you matter. Even if you don't shoot the ball, you're going to make the pass. You're going to set the screen, and what you do on that possession matters for us scoring. When everybody matters like that, you naturally play harder, you naturally buy in."

Jeff Teague's status is unclear due to an illness, potentially leaving Atlanta without it's second-leading scorer (16.8 ppg) and assists leader (7.3).

Dennis Schroder filled in for an injured Teague and scored a career-high 22 points in a 105-102 win at Dallas (39-20) on Dec. 22. Now, he could get the call to help Atlanta sweep the season series for the first time since 2003-04.

While the Hawks' success has stemmed from its tremendous chemistry, Dallas is dealing with animosity despite winning nine of 12 games and three in a row with Tuesday's 99-92 victory over Toronto.

Coach Rick Carlisle and Rajon Rondo exchanged words during a timeout in the third quarter, and the star guard was never inserted back into the game.

Asked if Rondo's absence was a coaching decision or disciplinary, Carlisle said he didn't return "because I'm the coach and that's the decision that I made at the time."

"I thought it worked out well," Carlisle said. "The other guys stepped up, and we were able to win."

When asked if Rondo would be Dallas' point guard against Atlanta, Carlisle said, "That's what we brought him here for."

Rondo had 13 points, 11 assists and three steals versus the Hawks on Dec. 22, his second game with Dallas since being acquired from Boston.

Monta Ellis, who had a team-high 18 points in that matchup, has totaled 43 points in the last two games after combining for 26 over the previous four.
