| |  | HOUSTON: GUARDS: The postseason was a different story for JAMES HARDEN, but he was a dominant all-around performer during the past two regular seasons. He'll do the bulk of the ball-handling for the up-tempo Rockets . . . After looking for an upgrade during the offseason, it's back to PATRICK BEVERLEY at the point. He's the No. 4 or 5 option on offense, but his defense will keep him on the floor . . . There's little backcourt depth, so rookie NICK JOHNSON has a shot at the rotation. He's NBA-ready as a defender, but his offensive game is shaky . . . ISH SMITH will push for that back-up point guard job . . . ISAIAH CANAAN will have to shoot the lights out early to get a look in the rotation . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA is still here as a 3-and-D option. FORWARDS: TREVOR ARIZA slides into Chandler Parsons' old role, providing defense and three-point shooting. He has a chance for a career-best output offensively . . . The Rockets know they need an upgrade over TERRENCE JONES, but they struck out during the offseason. He's a hustle guy, but he's too much of a defensive liability at the 4-spot . . . After disappearing last season, DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS has a chance to play himself into a thin frontcourt rotation. He's a potential 7-foot floor spacer . . . JEFF ADRIEN will be a "little things" guy in the second unit . . . They wanted to leave CLINT CAPELA overseas, but he'll be in Houston. He might be the future at the 4-spot, but he's years away . . . KOSTAS PAPANIKOLAOU has potential as a versatile bench option. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD looked healthy again and was, at times, dominant. His game still has obvious flaws, namely free-throw shooting and an inability to step away from the basket, but there's no reason he can't flirt with 20-10 nightly while being among the league leaders in blocks . . . Ex-Rocket JOEY DORSEY returns after a strong stint in Spain. He'll bring some muscle (and six fouls) behind Howard. | | DETROIT: GUARDS: New head coach Stan Van Gundy's system is perfect for BRANDON JENNINGS, as it is heavy on high pick-and-rolls, which is where Jennings is most dangerous. He'll never be an efficient scorer . . . Detroit gave a good chunk of change to JODIE MEEKS, so he's likely to start as a spot-up shooter when he returns from a back injury in January . . . A Tskitishvili Award-winner as one of the stars of Summer League, KENTAVIOUS CALDWELL-POPE has a shot to carve out sixth-man minutes . . . After a mini-breakout with Chicago, D.J. AUGUSTIN is the insurance policy behind Jennings. He's also a great fit for Van Gundy's system . . . WILL BYNUM has been downright solid with the second unit, but he'll have to play his way back into the rotation . . . This is a redshirt season for SPENCER DINWIDDIE as he comes back from a torn ACL. FORWARDS: They'll keep shopping JOSH SMITH, who is miscast as a 3 on this roster . . . KYLE SINGLER will continue to see solid part-time minutes. He can play both wing spots and has become a good enough threat on corner threes . . . CARON BUTLER joins a crowded frontcourt. He's evolved into a three-point specialist in the latter part of his career . . . Van Gundy is a JONAS JEREBKO believer. The stretch-4 fell out of favor the past two seasons, but he has a chance to earn a big role off the bench . . . CARTIER MARTIN gives them another athletic wing who can shoot the three . . . Euro import LUIGI DATOME was a big disappointment last season. He'll have a tough time breaking into this rotation . . . TONY MITCHELL might be looking at another year in the D-League . . . GREG MONROE is an everyday double-double threat. He'll fill the stat sheet as he plays for a contract for next season. CENTERS: ANDRE DRUMMOND is a monster on the boards with Defensive Player of the Year upside once he improves in space. Offensively, he can dunk but not much else . . . AARON GRAY is here to fill out the roster once he's cleared to return from his heart problems. |

With Dwight Howard out, Josh Smith has played a significant role in keeping the Houston Rockets on a winning track.
Extending the Rockets' streak of victories to five would likely come with some added personal satisfaction for the power forward.
Smith will face the struggling Detroit Pistons on Saturday night for the first time since they waived him in December.
Smith has scored in double figures in each of Houston's four consecutive wins, the first time he's done that since joining the team Dec. 26. He had a team-best 18 points in a 99-94 victory over Dallas on Wednesday and recorded his first double-double in 20 games with the Rockets in a 93-87 win in Boston on Friday.
Smith finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Donatas Motiejunas scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 12 boards to make up for James Harden's rough shooting night. Harden missed 17 of 21 shots while scoring 14 points, dropping his league-best average to 27.0.
Howard missed his third consecutive game because of a sprained right ankle and coach Kevin McHale said Friday, "We won't have Dwight for a while, I'm sure, so we're going to just go out there and play."
Smith will try to shine again in his All-Star teammate's absence while leading the Rockets (33-14) to their second-longest win streak in 2014-15. They opened this season with six consecutive victories.
Houston will make that attempt against a Pistons team that's lost four straight with the last three defeats coming since leading scorer Brandon Jennings' season-ending Achilles injury. Detroit let go of Smith on Dec. 22 after a 5-23 start.
Coach Stan Van Gundy cited a need for an adjusted offensive approach and Smith didn't fit into his team's plans.
"He's taking the most shots. He's a high-assist guy. He's got the ball in his hands a lot," Van Gundy said. "We would have had to have reduced his role offensively. I don't think he would have been happy with that at this point in his career. I don't think it necessarily would have been fair to him."
It seemed that Detroit made the right move, winning its first seven games after his departure and 12 of 15 before its current skid, but the loss of Jennings has proved too much lately. The Pistons (17-30) were routed 89-69 by a previously 8-37 Philadelphia team Wednesday.
"I don't have anything to prove. I think I've proven everything on the body of work on being in the league. I just want to get a win," Smith said.
Detroit shot 30.7 percent - its worst performance in five seasons - and matched a season high with 20 turnovers. The Pistons were also 2 of 20 from 3-point range.
"We weren't ready to play," Van Gundy said. "I don't think I've ever coached a game where one team's effort was that much better than my team's effort. I mean, it was a joke.
"It was embarrassing and humiliating, and I told them in there that I'm embarrassed as a coach that I did that poor of a job. And if they're not embarrassed, they don't belong in the NBA."
Heading into their first matchup this season, the Pistons have lost a series-worst seven in a row to the Rockets and would set another series mark with a fourth consecutive home loss.
