KEY GAME INFORMATION
HOUSTON: GUARDS: The postseason was a different story for JAMES HARDEN, but he was a dominant all-around performer during the past two regular seasons. He'll do the bulk of the ball-handling for the up-tempo Rockets . . . After looking for an upgrade during the offseason, it's back to PATRICK BEVERLEY at the point. He's the No. 4 or 5 option on offense, but his defense will keep him on the floor . . . There's little backcourt depth, so rookie NICK JOHNSON has a shot at the rotation. He's NBA-ready as a defender, but his offensive game is shaky . . . ISH SMITH will push for that back-up point guard job . . . ISAIAH CANAAN will have to shoot the lights out early to get a look in the rotation . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA is still here as a 3-and-D option. FORWARDS: TREVOR ARIZA slides into Chandler Parsons' old role, providing defense and three-point shooting. He has a chance for a career-best output offensively . . . The Rockets know they need an upgrade over TERRENCE JONES, but they struck out during the offseason. He's a hustle guy, but he's too much of a defensive liability at the 4-spot . . . After disappearing last season, DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS has a chance to play himself into a thin frontcourt rotation. He's a potential 7-foot floor spacer . . . JEFF ADRIEN will be a "little things" guy in the second unit . . . They wanted to leave CLINT CAPELA overseas, but he'll be in Houston. He might be the future at the 4-spot, but he's years away . . . KOSTAS PAPANIKOLAOU has potential as a versatile bench option. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD looked healthy again and was, at times, dominant. His game still has obvious flaws, namely free-throw shooting and an inability to step away from the basket, but there's no reason he can't flirt with 20-10 nightly while being among the league leaders in blocks . . . Ex-Rocket JOEY DORSEY returns after a strong stint in Spain. He'll bring some muscle (and six fouls) behind Howard.
BOSTON: GUARDS: RAJON RONDO's name is etched on the trading block. Regardless of where he lands, his injured knee should be 100 percent healthy . . . With an improved three-point shot, AVERY BRADLEY has become a complete player. His defense guarantees minutes regardless . . . MARCUS SMART seems to be waiting in the wings for a Rondo trade. In the meantime, he'll back up both guard spots. Just like in college, he'll be brilliant at times, but inconsistent . . . Local product PHIL PRESSEY will stick around as a No. 3 point guard . . . EVAN TURNER was a disaster in Indy. He'll have a tough time making this rotation . . . MARCUS THORNTON was acquired as a trade throw-in. The Celtics don't have big plans for the remorseless gunner. FORWARDS: He's isn't a legitimate No. 1 option, but JEFF GREEN will be the go-to guy again. He hasn't been able to handle the extra defensive attention, becoming increasingly inefficient . . . He has plenty of limitations on both ends of the court, but JARED SULLINGER is a crafty scorer. He'll get close to starter minutes as the Celtics search for offense . . . BRANDON BASS will see time at the 4 and the 5. He's made a pledge to improve offensively, but more likely he'll be a defensive presence and a screen-setter . . . JAMES YOUNG missed most of the summer healing a neck injury. He's going to do some damage running the floor, but he doesn't have the skills for the half-court game in the NBA . . . GERALD WALLACE is playing out the string. CENTERS: KELLY OLYNYK has the most upside in this frontcourt. His rare mobility and skill set for a 7-footer made a difference last year. It's just a question of whether he can hold up defensively down low . . . TYLER ZELLER gives them another solid 7-footer who opposing defenses have to account for. He'll fit well in head coach Brad Stevens' system . . . JOEL ANTHONY isn't going to get off the bench.

*Rockets-Celtics Preview* =========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Houston (32-14) at Boston (16-28), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Houston Rockets are showing the ability to morph into a team with a functional bench to complement James Harden and Dwight Howard.

Lately, reserves have had to fill in entirely for Howard, who will miss a third straight game Friday night when the Rockets visit the Boston Celtics.

Houston's star center will reportedly miss at least the team's stops in Boston and Detroit before having his ailing right knee re-evaluated. After an MRI Wednesday, the team revealed via its official Twitter feed that Howard is suffering from edema in the knee, which is caused by fluid building up in body tissues.

His absence didn't keep the Rockets (32-14) from a third straight win Wednesday, defeating Dallas 99-94 with 47 points coming from reserves.

For the season, the Rockets rank near the bottom of the league with 27.2 bench points per game while shooting 40.4 percent, which is better than only Charlotte. In the last four, they've averaged 42.8 points on 47.4 percent shooting.

Part of that increased contribution Wednesday came from the return of Terrence Jones, who had 10 points in 21 minutes of his first appearance after missing 41 games due to nerve inflammation in his left leg.

Joey Dorsey has started at center and scored a total of four points in the past two, but reserve Josh Smith has helped make up for Howard's lost production. He's averaged 14.3 points while shooting 55.9 percent during this winning streak.

"I'm starting to find my way, starting to find spacing and other avenues to be productive and efficient," said Smith, who saw plenty of the Celtics (16-28) as a starter in the Eastern Conference but has been limited to 11.5 points on 33.3 percent shooting in his last two matchups.

Field-goal attempts were evenly distributed against the Mavericks, with Donatas Motiejunas taking a team-high 16, James Harden 14 and Smith and Corey Brewer 13. Harden averaged 20.0 shots in the previous 13 games Howard missed.

"We've got so many weapons now," said Harden, who averaged 37.0 points in his previous four before scoring 17 against Dallas. "We've got a lot of depth on this team, a lot of guys that can contribute. When we've got so many guys contributing - six guys in double figures - it's kind of hard to beat us."

Harden scored 26 against the Celtics in a 104-90 home win on Nov. 1, but he's been limited to 17.3 points on 37.8 percent in three career starts in Boston. Jones was healthy for the early-season meeting, scoring 25, and is averaging 20.3 points while shooting 66.7 percent in three games against Boston.

The Rockets have won three straight in the series while limiting the Celtics to an average of 89.0 points and 35.9 percent shooting, and Houston will be trying for its eighth win in 10 meetings.

The Celtics return from a 3-3 road trip against the West, though they're a bit down on its conclusion - Wednesday's 110-98 loss at league-worst Minnesota.

"If you want to make it to where we're trying to make it, these games cannot happen," Jared Sullinger said after scoring 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting.

It was largely the bench that kept the Celtics close, scoring 47 points on 52.5 percent shooting. Over the last 13 games, Boston's averaging a league-best 44.2 bench points.

The Celtics are two games out of the final playoff position in the East. After Houston, they face four teams with sub-.500 records.
