KEY GAME INFORMATION
NEW YORK: GUARDS: A huge upgrade over Raymond Felton, JOSE CALDERON's shooting and low turnover rate make him a good fit in the triangle offense. Defense will be an issue . . . His shot selection will always be laughable, but J.R. SMITH will still have the occasional blow-up game . . . IMAN SHUMPERT never looked right last season. He won't get bumped from the rotation, but he's in danger of getting just part-time minutes . . . He'll defend, and if his strong shooting as a rookie wasn't a fluke, TIM HARDAWAY JR. will push his way into the starting five . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a poor man's Calderon . . . SHANE LARKIN has some long-term upside, but is unlikely to contribute this season. FORWARDS: The triangle offense should play to CARMELO ANTHONY's strengths and open things up a bit more than the iso-heavy system they ran under Mike Woodson. He'll be in the running for another scoring title . . . It's another year of ANDREA BARGNANI. The Knicks are too thin to not play him, but his defense is atrocious and he hasn't shot it well in years . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE's monster deal expires after this season, and a trade is a possibility. In a best-case scenario, he can be effective for 20 minutes or so per night . . . Second-rounder CLEANTHONY EARLY has a chance to break into this rotation. He'll defend and pick up some hustle points . . . QUINCY ACY and TRAVIS OUTLAW will provide some much needed depth and energy for a team that can sometimes be lackadaisical on the court. CENTERS: With Tyson Chandler gone, it will be up to SAMUEL DALEMBERT to pick up the defensive slack. He's a capable rim protector and could be in for as much playing time as he's gotten in years . . . JASON SMITH is another defensive-minded big man. He's good in space but is not a polished shot blocker . . . COLE ALDRICH was good enough late last season to earn a bench spot in the 2014-15 campaign.
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.

*Knicks-Hornets Preview* ========================

By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer

New York (7-36) at Charlotte (18-25), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The New York Knicks are finally having fun, and winning surely makes a difference.

Carmelo Anthony and Langston Galloway are big reasons for both.

Anthony and Galloway look to continue spurring the Knicks' longest winning streak of the season Saturday night against the Charlotte Hornets.

Just over a week ago New York (8-36) was enduring a franchise-record 16-game losing streak, but the team has shown signs of life while winning three straight.

"I think it's just effort, energy, attention to details," Anthony said. "I think the guys that have been helping us and contributing to these last couple of games, (those) guys are hungry. They're showing it, they're playing like it. They're having a lot of fun. We're having a lot of fun out there now. I think that comes with putting forth the effort and the energy and being able to see results from there."

Anthony is doing his part, averaging 25.3 points in four games after missing six with a sore left knee that's hampered him for much of the season. The forward was named a starter for next month's All-Star game at Madison Square Garden, but a much less-heralded Knick is also providing a spark.

Galloway, an undrafted rookie out of Saint Joseph's, is averaging 15.7 points on 51.4 percent shooting in three games after getting 9.8 per game while converting 36.1 percent over the previous four.

The guard totaled 15 points and eight rebounds while Anthony's 25 points led the way in a 113-106 win over Orlando on Friday.

Galloway and forwards Lance Thomas and Louis Amundson are on their second 10-day contracts. Thomas chipped in a season-high 16 points off the bench against the Magic, while Amundson has six rebounds and two blocks as a starter.

"We've mixed in some personalities and some guys into this group, who have a core toughness about them that I think is effecting everybody," coach Derek Fisher said.

The Knicks will need to decide soon if Galloway, Thomas and Amundson are worth retaining beyond their short-term deals.

"I don't think it's just because the guys are on 10-days or their new," Fisher said. "That's what a team is; everybody plays a different role and has different ways of contributing to the group. You can't always look at a stat sheet and decide how impactful a player is on his team. I think we have a number of guys that their character, their integrity is always going to allow them to continue to fight through to be resilient."

That attitude was lacking - and so was Anthony's presence - in a 110-82 home loss to Charlotte on Jan. 10.

Anthony had 32 points at Charlotte on Dec. 5, but New York allowed Kemba Walker to drive the lane and hit a layup with time expiring to down the Knicks 103-102.

Walker is averaging 21.9 points in his past seven meetings with the Knicks and scored 28 last month. The guard may be looking forward to this matchup after being held to eight points while making 3 of 14 from the floor in a 129-90 loss at Cleveland on Friday.

Al Jefferson, though, would like to build on his 22 points and 11 rebounds from Friday. The center totaled 20 points and nine boards over the two previous games after sitting out nine - including the trip to New York - with a strained left groin.

He's averaging 24.3 points over his last four games against the Knicks.
