KEY GAME INFORMATION
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.
OKLAHOMA CITY: GUARDS: Everything should be a full go with RUSSELL WESTBROOK. His attacking style of play will always carry some injury risk, but he hasn't lost any explosiveness to this point . . . REGGIE JACKSON wants to start, but it's a question of whether the Thunder can survive defensively with him and Westbrook in a small backcourt. Jackson is certainly their second-best offensive guard . . . ANTHONY MORROW can flat-out shoot. He can't do anything else, but that floor spacing might be enough to get him 20 minutes per night . . . If the light doesn't turn on, JEREMY LAMB will be on the outside of this rotation. FORWARDS: Once he returns from his foot injury in late November, it should be the same old story for KEVIN DURANT, the reigning NBA MVP . . . He still struggles defensively in space, but SERGE IBAKA will be right there among the league leaders in blocks again. Throw in a reliable mid-range game, and more offensive responsibility with Durant out, and he's a fringe All-Star . . . NICK COLLISON takes charges, but doesn't do much else . . . Rookie MITCH McGARY could be pushing Collison for minutes by midseason . . . ANDRE ROBERSON could get another handful of starts as a defensive presence on the wing, but he rarely plays 20-plus minutes . . . PERRY JONES is on the fringe of this roster. CENTERS: Is this it? Could this be the season that the Thunder finally stop playing KENDRICK PERKINS? . . . STEVEN ADAMS came on strong late last season and is probably already better than Perk. He can defend and moves the ball offensively.

*Hornets-Thunder Preview* =========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Charlotte (10-19) at Oklahoma City (13-16), 8:00 p.m. EDT

While Russell Westbrook is helping Oklahoma City stay afloat without Kevin Durant, Kemba Walker has Charlotte riding high without underachieving Lance Stephenson.

In a matchup between a pair of hot point guards, the Thunder will try to win back-to-back games without their MVP for only the second time, while the visiting Hornets seek their fifth straight win Friday night.

Durant missed his fourth straight contest Thursday and his sprained right ankle could keep him out a while longer. The 2013-14 scoring champion, who also missed the first 17 games with a broken right foot, isn't expected to Charlotte.

Westbrook will again try to carry the Thunder (14-16) after finishing with 34 points, 11 assists and five steals in a 114-106 win at San Antonio that evened their record at 2-2 since Durant went down.

The All-Star has totaled 74 points and 17 assists in his past two games and averaged 33.4 and 8.6 over his previous five. He's also scored 20-plus in 14 straight - the longest streak of his career. Westbrook had 26 points on 10-of-12 shooting in the most recent meeting with the Hornets, a 116-99 home win March 2.

"You just have to rally behind (Westbrook)," fellow guard Anthony Morrow told the team's official website. "He's a leader, natural born. He comes out there and plays hard."

The Thunder, who are 7-14 without Durant, look to avoid their third straight home defeat as they go after their eighth consecutive victory against the Hornets. They've won 11 of 12 at home in the series dating to the franchise's days in Seattle.

Stephenson has been a disappointment with 10.2 points per game on 38.6 percent shooting after signing a three-year, $27 million deal in the offseason. Now he's expected to miss his fifth straight game with a hip injury.

The Hornets (10-19), however, have won a season high four in a row without Stephenson following a 6-19 start.

Walker has shined in his absence, averaging 24.3 points while hitting 13 of 28 from 3-point range in his last six games. He finished with 27 points and backcourt mate Gerald Henderson added 20 in Tuesday's 108-101 win at Milwaukee.

Behind Walker, the Hornets are averaging 107.8 points with a 40.7 3-point percentage during their winning streak. Charlotte, which forced 20 turnovers Tuesday, is also giving up 89.7 per game and 35.7 shooting from beyond the arc in its past three.

"We're making progress and, in this league, that's what good teams do," coach Steve Clifford said. "The last three or four games we've been moving the ball well."

Walker will try to end his struggles against the Thunder after averaging 7.8 points on 25.5 percent shooting in five career meetings. He's totaled 10 points while missing 21 of 26 shots in his three visits to Oklahoma City.

The Hornets have a plus-7.5 rebounding margin over their last four, which bodes well heading into a matchup with a Thunder team ranked second in the NBA at plus-3.5.

Al Jefferson, averaging a team-high 8.2 rebounds, had 25 points, seven boards and seven assists in Oklahoma City last March.

The Thunder's Steven Adams had 16 points and 15 rebounds on Christmas Day, while Serge Ibaka added 21 and nine. Adams is averaging 11.0 boards over his past four games and Ibaka is pulling down 8.6 in his last six versus Charlotte.
