KEY GAME INFORMATION
BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench.
BOSTON: GUARDS: RAJON RONDO's name is etched on the trading block. Regardless of where he lands, his injured knee should be 100 percent healthy . . . With an improved three-point shot, AVERY BRADLEY has become a complete player. His defense guarantees minutes regardless . . . MARCUS SMART seems to be waiting in the wings for a Rondo trade. In the meantime, he'll back up both guard spots. Just like in college, he'll be brilliant at times, but inconsistent . . . Local product PHIL PRESSEY will stick around as a No. 3 point guard . . . EVAN TURNER was a disaster in Indy. He'll have a tough time making this rotation . . . MARCUS THORNTON was acquired as a trade throw-in. The Celtics don't have big plans for the remorseless gunner. FORWARDS: He's isn't a legitimate No. 1 option, but JEFF GREEN will be the go-to guy again. He hasn't been able to handle the extra defensive attention, becoming increasingly inefficient . . . He has plenty of limitations on both ends of the court, but JARED SULLINGER is a crafty scorer. He'll get close to starter minutes as the Celtics search for offense . . . BRANDON BASS will see time at the 4 and the 5. He's made a pledge to improve offensively, but more likely he'll be a defensive presence and a screen-setter . . . JAMES YOUNG missed most of the summer healing a neck injury. He's going to do some damage running the floor, but he doesn't have the skills for the half-court game in the NBA . . . GERALD WALLACE is playing out the string. CENTERS: KELLY OLYNYK has the most upside in this frontcourt. His rare mobility and skill set for a 7-footer made a difference last year. It's just a question of whether he can hold up defensively down low . . . TYLER ZELLER gives them another solid 7-footer who opposing defenses have to account for. He'll fit well in head coach Brad Stevens' system . . . JOEL ANTHONY isn't going to get off the bench.

*Nets-Celtics Preview* ======================

By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor

Brooklyn (12-15) at Boston (10-16), 1:00 p.m. EDT

Winning streaks of even three games have been hard to come by for every team in the Atlantic Division except first-place Toronto.

The Brooklyn Nets will try to do it for the first time this season Friday night when they visit a Boston Celtics club that has managed to accomplish it only twice.

The results for the Nets (12-15) since Dec. 5 have been no surprise given the matchups. They lost to Atlanta, Cleveland and Chicago, then beat Philadelphia and Charlotte before another three-game skid against Miami, the Raptors and the Cavaliers. Their current two-game run has come at the expense of Detroit and Denver.

The victories have Brooklyn on the verge of winning three straight for the first time since April 4-8. The Nets won three of more in a row seven times last season.

The Celtics (10-16) are in third place behind Brooklyn but have managed a pair of three-game win streaks. The most recent surge featured victories over the 76ers, Orlando and Minnesota before they lost Sunday at Miami and to the Magic on Tuesday.

Boston was horrendous at the start against Orlando, trailing 26-9 after one quarter, but the Celtics rallied before falling short in a 100-95 defeat.

"We didn't play very well," coach Brad Stevens told the team's official website. "That was fool's gold there at the end. I credit the guys that were in at the end."

The league's two worst teams, New York and Philadelphia, trail the Celtics in the Atlantic behind a combined 9-48 record. The 76ers, however, will also get a chance to post a third straight win Friday at Portland. The Knicks won their second and third games of the season but haven't won back-to-back contests since.

It all seems to be adding up to a cakewalk for the Raptors, who are 22-7 and chasing their second straight division crown. Brooklyn appears to have the best shot at closing the gap, but its trails Toronto by nine games.

The Nets can pick up some steam with their next two at Barclays Center before a Dec. 30 visit to Chicago. The recent play of Mason Plumlee has also sparked an upswing.

In the last two games, Plumlee has a combined 40 points on 18-of-24 shooting and 25 rebounds. He had 19 points and 13 boards - including five on the offensive glass - in Tuesday's 102-96 win over the Nuggets.

"It's a good feeling, but it's just something to build on," said Plumlee, who has averaged 18.1 points on 67.5 percent shooting and 10.6 rebounds in his last seven games - all starts due to a back injury that sidelined center Brook Lopez. "I'm not where I want to be. It's a step in the right direction. It feels good to be where I was at. It's still a ways to go."

Plumlee has had to shoulder a lot of work in the paint in the absence of Lopez, but Brooklyn's regular starter returned to action against Denver and had six points and four boards in just over eight minutes. Lopez, however, has said he's fine with a bench role if coach Lionel Hollins wants Plumlee to continue starting.

"Mason's been great, man. His energy, his effort, taking the challenge and playing some of the premier 4s and 5s in this league," said Joe Johnson, who scored 27 points Tuesday. "I think he's been doing a tremendous job filling in for the absence of Brook."

While Lopez will likely get increasing minutes with each game, starting point guard Deron Williams remains day to day with a strained right calf.
