|
| | | MILWAUKEE: GUARDS: The Bucks hope to fill a gaping hole at point guard with a committee approach. BRANDON KNIGHT, an undersized, athletically-overmatched combo guard, will get first crack at the job . . . Ex-Laker KENDALL MARSHALL, a heady floor general who can't shoot or defend, is an option as well . . . KHRIS MIDDLETON, a spot-up shooter, has a good chance to retain his starting job . . . New head coach Jason Kidd will try to rebuild O.J. MAYO, who could emerge as a serviceable sixth man, but looked wholly disinterested last season . . . The arrival of Marshall likely pushes NATE WOLTERS out of the rotation. He could be ticketed for the D-League at some point this season. FORWARDS: JABARI PARKER becomes the new face of this franchise. He can score as well as facilitate the offense. The only real question is what kind of defensive effort he puts in . . . GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO will be used at both forward spots and both guard spots as well. The Greek Freak is raw, but the Bucks will expand his role . . . After a season in Larry Drew's doghouse, the coaching change should bode well for ERSAN ILYASOVA. He's likely looking at a part-time role . . . JOHN HENSON will play some 4 and 5, though his lack of an offensive game limits his appeal . . . JOHNNY O'BRYANT III might push for a rotation spot once he returns from a knee injury in late November. He's one of the few big men on this team who can score around the basket . . . If DAMIEN INGLIS comes over, he's looking at a D-League stint. CENTERS: Kidd is a LARRY SANDERS believer, so after a season filled with injuries and knucklehead behavior, he'll have every chance to bounce back. When he's in the right place, he's an elite rim protector . . . Larry Drew favorite ZAZA PACHULIA is looking at a traditional back-up role now that Drew is gone. | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation. |

*Bucks-Hawks Preview* =====================
By JON PALMIERI STATS Editor
Milwaukee (14-15) at Atlanta (21-7), 7:30 p.m. EDT
Almost nobody predicted the Atlanta Hawks would be challenging for the best record in the Eastern Conference this season.
The Milwaukee Bucks might be one of those very rare exceptions.
After silencing their critics with a run of victories against top-tier competition, the Hawks look to continue their dominance of the sub-.500 Bucks on Friday night.
Though the Hawks reached the playoffs for the seventh straight season in 2013-14, they only won 38 games and made minimal changes over the summer, leaving most to believe the team would only see a slight improvement, if any.
Atlanta (21-7) has instead flourished in its second season under coach Mike Budenholzer, sitting atop the Southeast Division and trailing conference-leading Toronto by just one-half game.
Since opening 7-6, the Hawks have won 14 of 15 and five straight. They rallied from a 13-point deficit in a 107-104 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. DeMarre Carroll scored a career-high 25 points and Al Horford added 20 for Atlanta, which limited the Clippers to 40.2 percent shooting and never relinquished the lead after scoring the first nine points of the fourth quarter.
The five-game winning streak has come against Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Dallas and the Clippers. Only the first and last wins in that stretch came at home.
"Everyone kind of said let's wait and see who they are when they start playing some tougher teams," guard Kyle Korver said. "We've had a tough little stretch here and I think we've played well. We won some games on the road and obviously it was a big win here."
Tuesday marked the Hawks' eighth straight home victory, their longest run since capturing 10 in a row from Nov. 25, 2010-Jan. 8, 2011. They haven't lost at home to the Bucks (14-15) since Nov. 10, 2010, taking the past five meetings at Philips Arena. Atlanta has won seven straight and 10 of 11 overall in the series.
Outstanding defense has been a constant during the 14-1 run for the Hawks, who have limited opponents to 91.4 points per game and 41.8 percent shooting.
The team's depth was also evident after starting point guard Jeff Teague missed three games with a left hamstring strain before returning to face the Clippers. Dennis Schroder made his fourth consecutive start Tuesday, averaging 11.3 points and 6.5 assists in those games.
This has also been a successful first two months for Milwaukee, which needs only one win to match last season's victory total of 15, the lowest in franchise history.
The Bucks were unable to achieve that Tuesday against visiting Charlotte, getting outscored 34-24 in the third quarter en route to a 108-101 defeat. Brandon Knight had Milwaukee's first 30-point game this season with 34, but the four other starters combined for only 27.
The team held a players-only meeting 50 minutes after the game.
"Just trying to figure things out," said forward Khris Middleton. "Nothing drastic. No fights, no arguments. Just in there talking trying to get better."
Knight averaged 26.0 points on 63.0 percent shooting in last season's three games against the Hawks. He made 9 of 15 from 3-point range in that span.
Atlanta's defense will face another challenge against a Bucks team that has scored 100 points in 12 of its last 14 games and ranks first in the NBA with a 49.9 shooting percentage in December.
