|
| | | DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder. | | PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility. |

*Mavericks-Suns Preview* ========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Dallas (20-8) at Phoenix (15-14), 9:00 p.m. EDT
Goran Dragic was asked why the Phoenix Suns have played better on the road than at home, and his scattered answer offered a number of possibilities.
After sweeping a three-game road trip, Phoenix returns home Tuesday night looking to end a three-game home losing streak against a Dallas Mavericks team still trying to adjust with Rajon Rondo on board.
The Suns (15-14) improved to 9-7 on the road with Sunday's 104-92 win over Washington after taking out Charlotte and New York. They're just 6-7 at home, though, and are the only team in the league with an overall record above .500 that owns a losing mark at home.
"Maybe we're just more focused (on the road)," Dragic said. "Maybe at home, we're thinking, `Oh we're playing at home. We can beat anybody at home.' Maybe we are too relaxed."
Whatever the reason, the Suns know they need to turn things around on their home floor - even though eight of their next 10 after this one are on the road. Coach Jeff Hornacek is hoping they can carry over the solid play from Sunday's victory, as the three-guard lineup of Dragic, Eric Bledsoe and Isaiah Thomas finished the contest in impressive fashion.
Bledsoe and Markieff Morris scored 17 points apiece while Dragic added 16, nine rebounds and three assists as Phoenix shot 51.3 percent.
"Maybe this is the game that helps us to get going because it was a full all-player, all-team effort," Hornacek said. "This is the way we need to play."
The addition of Thomas in the offseason posed questions for how Hornacek would find minutes for his guard-heavy roster, and he's often tinkering with the lineup and sticking with the hot hand.
Dragic is partial to the group that finished the game Sunday.
"Every time we play with three guards, we manage to close games," Dragic said.
Dragic had 28 points and a season-high 13 assists in the Suns' 118-106 road victory in the first meeting with Dallas on Dec. 6. Monta Ellis had 33 points in that contest but was held to 18 on 8-of-22 shooting on Monday as the Mavericks had their three-game winning streak snapped with a 105-102 home loss to Atlanta.
Dallas (20-9) set a season low for first-half points for the second straight contest and trailed by as many as 24 in the third quarter, but they outscored the Hawks 39-23 in the fourth to make it close.
Dirk Nowitzki scored 16 points and Rondo, playing in his second game since being acquired from Boston on Thursday, finished with 13 points and 11 assists.
"I think we're trying to figure each other out," said Tyson Chandler, who had 19 rebounds. "It's a new group out there. We're bringing Rondo in, but also we have a different second unit, trying to balance the lineups."
The Mavericks now look to bounce back on the road, where they've won six of seven. Dallas shot 43 percent in a win over San Antonio on Saturday and 43.3 percent against the Hawks, dropping to 4-6 when they shoot under 45 percent.
"We're just not playing very well," coach Rick Carlisle said. "We've got to play better, and we will play better. We're not a finished product here with this new alignment and we have work to do."
Dallas has won six of the last eight meetings in Phoenix. Ellis scored 24 points to help overcome 28 from Dragic in a 110-107 victory in the last matchup there Jan. 17.
