KEY GAME INFORMATION

PHOENIX: GUARDS: This is GORAN DRAGIC's team, and he'll continue to thrive in head coach Jeff Hornacek's up-tempo system . . . ERIC BLEDSOE's contract extension took longer than planned, but both sides are happy it's done. Durability is a concern, but he's an explosive scorer who can defend, and a fringe All-Star when he's healthy . . . They do have a logjam in the backcourt with ISAIAH THOMAS coming in. Thomas would likely become a high-energy sixth man, a role he's better suited for than a starter . . . GERALD GREEN will see solid minutes considering he can play both wing spots. The question is whether the vastly improved three-point shooting was for real . . . It's a developmental season for 20-year-old rookie TYLER ENNIS . . . ARCHIE GOODWIN will need to polish both his point-guard skills and his shooting. FORWARDS: MARKIEFF MORRIS was a highly effective stretch-4 with the second unit last season, and he could be in for a full-time role now that Channing Frye is gone . . . Retained as a free agent, P.J. TUCKER will continue to be a glue guy in the starting five . . . MARCUS MORRIS has fallen behind his twin brother in the rotation. He's more of a 'tweener who doesn't quite fit in that stretch-4 role . . . Rookie T.J. WARREN fits Hornacek's system and should have his way with opposing bench players. He's a below-the-rim, mid-range shooter with limited upside, but crafty enough to pile up points against second-unit talent. He'll miss the first two weeks of the season with a fractured thumb . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER gives the Suns some depth at the 4-spot, and he fits the system with his long-range shooting. CENTERS: MILES PLUMLEE is the best option in an underwhelming rotation in the middle. He's an energy guy who does little else . . . He lost his rookie season, and ALEX LEN is still in the developmental stage. His upside is much higher than Plumlee's, and he might get minutes because of his screening and defensive mobility.

NEW YORK: GUARDS: A huge upgrade over Raymond Felton, JOSE CALDERON's shooting and low turnover rate make him a good fit in the triangle offense. Defense will be an issue . . . His shot selection will always be laughable, but J.R. SMITH will still have the occasional blow-up game . . . IMAN SHUMPERT never looked right last season. He won't get bumped from the rotation, but he's in danger of getting just part-time minutes . . . He'll defend, and if his strong shooting as a rookie wasn't a fluke, TIM HARDAWAY JR. will push his way into the starting five . . . PABLO PRIGIONI is a poor man's Calderon . . . SHANE LARKIN has some long-term upside, but is unlikely to contribute this season. FORWARDS: The triangle offense should play to CARMELO ANTHONY's strengths and open things up a bit more than the iso-heavy system they ran under Mike Woodson. He'll be in the running for another scoring title . . . It's another year of ANDREA BARGNANI. The Knicks are too thin to not play him, but his defense is atrocious and he hasn't shot it well in years . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE's monster deal expires after this season, and a trade is a possibility. In a best-case scenario, he can be effective for 20 minutes or so per night . . . Second-rounder CLEANTHONY EARLY has a chance to break into this rotation. He'll defend and pick up some hustle points . . . QUINCY ACY and TRAVIS OUTLAW will provide some much needed depth and energy for a team that can sometimes be lackadaisical on the court. CENTERS: With Tyson Chandler gone, it will be up to SAMUEL DALEMBERT to pick up the defensive slack. He's a capable rim protector and could be in for as much playing time as he's gotten in years . . . JASON SMITH is another defensive-minded big man. He's good in space but is not a polished shot blocker . . . COLE ALDRICH was good enough late last season to earn a bench spot in the 2014-15 campaign.

While the Phoenix Suns got a much-needed win last time out, the injury-plagued New York Knicks came up short again.

Things aren't likely to get any easier if Carmelo Anthony remains out.

Amid whispers of being shut down, Anthony's status remains unclear headed into Saturday's matchup with the visiting Suns.

The Knicks (5-23) own the NBA's second-worst record and are averaging 93.8 points to rank near the bottom of the league. They've dropped three straight and 13 of 14, including six in a row at home for their longest slide at Madison Square Garden since suffering seven consecutive defeats Nov. 3-Dec. 1, 2013.

New York returns home after falling 103-97 at Chicago on Thursday. Tim Hardaway Jr. shot 5 of 8 from 3-point range on his way to 23 points as the Knicks kept it close despite Anthony's absence.

The seven-time All-Star sat out for the second time in five games with a nagging sore left knee, an ailment that isn't likely to go away without some time off. Anthony is averaging a team-best 23.4 points after averaging 28.0 over the previous two seasons.

"Ultimately that has to be the player's decision, in terms of what he feels like is best for him and his career. Also, what's best for the team," coach Derek Fisher said. "I think Melo is smart enough to balance those things. He doesn't like to sit out.

"I think he's savvy enough to make the right decision at the right time."

Aside from Anthony, J.R. Smith missed his fifth consecutive game with a left foot injury. Cleanthony Early (knee) and Iman Shumpert (shoulder) remain out for New York, but Andrea Bargnani (hamstring) is getting closer to debuting.

"We have to go out there every night and play hard. We're trying to build something, we're trying to get something done," guard Jose Calderon said. "At the end of the day, you're representing a team, you're representing a city. ... We have so many injuries, so many things going on, we just need a couple close games to change the spirit."

Phoenix (13-14) is hoping to have done just that with Wednesday's 111-106 win at Charlotte. The Suns had dropped their previous six games, three of which were decided by a combined five points.

"Tonight was an important win for us," said Goran Dragic, who scored 20 points in his return from a two-game absence due to a strained back. "We were close in some games, but you start doubting yourself."

Isaiah Thomas had 23 points off the bench as the Suns stormed back from 17 down in the second quarter. Phoenix shot 52.4 percent and committed only eight turnovers after averaging 18.2 in the previous five games.

"It's tough when you've lost six in a row and you get down (by 17 points)," coach Jeff Hornacek said. "That's an easy time to just quit and say, `Here we go - number seven.' But our guys didn't quit."

Dragic is averaging 21.0 points on 53.8 percent shooting in his last eight games. He led the way with 32 as Phoenix easily got by New York 112-88 on March 28 to snap a three-game skid in the series.

Dragic also scored 28 during the Suns' last visit to MSG, a 98-96 overtime defeat Jan. 13.

The Knicks could surely use another big game from Hardaway, who has averaged 18.8 points during Smith's absence. Anthony is averaging 28.0 points in his last three games against Phoenix despite shooting 39.4 percent.
