| | | DALLAS: GUARDS: MONTA ELLIS will be the Mavs' lead guard again, taking on even more ball-handling responsibilities with their black hole at point guard. In his first season in Dallas, he proved to be the perfect fit running pick-and-rolls in head coach Rick Carlisle's system . . . The Mavericks are in trouble if they have to rely on RAYMOND FELTON, a fringe rotation-caliber player even in his brief 'prime,' but he might end up the starter by default . . . JAMEER NELSON's poor defense makes him difficult to pair with Ellis, but offensively he's the best option . . . DEVIN HARRIS is a superior defender and a dangerous offensive player, but the questions are durability and how well he fits alongside Ellis . . . GAL MEKEL struggled offensively, but his defense is going to earn him minutes at both guard spots. He's a borderline rotation guy. FORWARDS: DIRK NOWITZKI came back on a discounted deal, but at age 36 he still has plenty left in the tank. He's a legit All-Star-caliber player . . . Dallas pried CHANDLER PARSONS from Houston, giving the team someone to run the floor with Ellis and shoot some corner threes in the half-court set. He figures to have a slightly smaller role than he did with the Rockets though . . . Last season in Utah, RICHARD JEFFERSON reestablished himself as a rotation player by adding a consistent three-point shot . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU gives the Mavs an energy guy who can play both forward spots . . . JAE CROWDER will have to fight to keep his spot in the rotation. He has yet to put it together offensively and he needs to add a three-point shot . . . GREG SMITH won't make a significant contribution unless his knee proves healthy. CENTERS: Durability is an underlying issue, but the Mavs were thrilled to bring TYSON CHANDLER back into the fold. He'll be much happier in Carlisle's defensive system than he was in Mike Woodson's switch-everything approach . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will play fewer minutes behind Chandler as an extra rim protector and rebounder. | | DETROIT: GUARDS: New head coach Stan Van Gundy's system is perfect for BRANDON JENNINGS, as it is heavy on high pick-and-rolls, which is where Jennings is most dangerous. He'll never be an efficient scorer . . . Detroit gave a good chunk of change to JODIE MEEKS, so he's likely to start as a spot-up shooter when he returns from a back injury in January . . . A Tskitishvili Award-winner as one of the stars of Summer League, KENTAVIOUS CALDWELL-POPE has a shot to carve out sixth-man minutes . . . After a mini-breakout with Chicago, D.J. AUGUSTIN is the insurance policy behind Jennings. He's also a great fit for Van Gundy's system . . . WILL BYNUM has been downright solid with the second unit, but he'll have to play his way back into the rotation . . . This is a redshirt season for SPENCER DINWIDDIE as he comes back from a torn ACL. FORWARDS: They'll keep shopping JOSH SMITH, who is miscast as a 3 on this roster . . . KYLE SINGLER will continue to see solid part-time minutes. He can play both wing spots and has become a good enough threat on corner threes . . . CARON BUTLER joins a crowded frontcourt. He's evolved into a three-point specialist in the latter part of his career . . . Van Gundy is a JONAS JEREBKO believer. The stretch-4 fell out of favor the past two seasons, but he has a chance to earn a big role off the bench . . . CARTIER MARTIN gives them another athletic wing who can shoot the three . . . Euro import LUIGI DATOME was a big disappointment last season. He'll have a tough time breaking into this rotation . . . TONY MITCHELL might be looking at another year in the D-League . . . GREG MONROE is an everyday double-double threat. He'll fill the stat sheet as he plays for a contract for next season. CENTERS: ANDRE DRUMMOND is a monster on the boards with Defensive Player of the Year upside once he improves in space. Offensively, he can dunk but not much else . . . AARON GRAY is here to fill out the roster once he's cleared to return from his heart problems. |

*Mavericks-Pistons Preview* ===========================
By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer
Dallas (17-8) at Detroit (5-20), 7:30 p.m. EDT
The Dallas Mavericks opened a back-to-back set against two of the NBA's worst teams by jumping out to an early lead and spreading their minutes around in an easy win.
The same could happen in Detroit, where the Mavericks face the Pistons on Wednesday night before returning home to face the defending NBA champions Saturday.
The Pistons (5-20) haven't won a home game since the second week of the season, dropping 10 straight since defeating Milwaukee on Nov. 7 to match a slide from Dec. 21-Jan. 31, 1994. They last topped that in a single season with a franchise-record 15 straight losses from Dec. 6, 1966-Jan. 31, 1967, but they strung 13 together from the end of '79-80 through the start of the following season.
They're also 0-7 at home against the Western Conference, while Dallas is 7-0 in visits to the East with 11 straight wins dating to last season.
For the Mavericks (18-8), Tuesday's 107-87 victory in New York required little from the starting five. Dirk Nowitzki had 16 points, while Monta Ellis scored 14 and was the only Dallas player to reach 26 minutes.
"I figured we were all on the bench and they were going to make a run, but our bench guys did a great job of closing the game out," Nowitzki told the team's official website. "... It's a late game here, we're going to get to Detroit late, and we've got a game tomorrow. So, that was much-needed in the fourth."
The Mavs had dropped three of five against some of the West's top teams, but a reprieve against the worst of the East could send them home with plenty of fresh legs ahead of their weekend matchup with San Antonio.
Tyson Chandler beat his former team for the second time this season, and dating to that first win over the Knicks on Nov. 26 is averaging 11.0 points and 13.5 rebounds.
"I feel like I've got a great opportunity with this team and I want to help lead this team to something special," Chandler said.
The Mavericks have won five straight and 10 of 11 against the Pistons. Josh Smith averaged 28.5 points in Detroit's losses to the Mavs a season ago.
The Pistons traveled west for a three-game trip with a 13-game losing streak weighing them down, yet they returned with a pair of victories.
Wins at Phoenix and Sacramento, though, were followed by a 113-91 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. Detroit held the Kings to 35.5 percent shooting in Saturday's 95-90 win but allowed the Clippers to connect on 53.8.
"They totally tore our defense apart," coach Stan Van Gundy said.
Jodie Meeks continued to progress, scoring 20 points in his third game back from a stress reaction in his lower back that had kept him out the entire season.
"I felt like I got into a rhythm," said Meeks, who was 5 of 10 overall and 3 of 5 from 3-point range. "It is only my third game back, so I have to take it day by day - and shoot it with confidence when I am open."
Detroit can certainly use the help on the perimeter, where it's shooting 28.1 percent from 3-point range in eight games this month.
Some of that has to do with the production of Brandon Jennings and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The starting backcourt has combined for 19 points in the last two games, though Jennings is in a longer slump.
The point guard is averaging 4.7 points and shooting 21.8 percent in his last seven games. In nine since returning from a three-game absence due to a sprained left thumb, he's shooting 23.8 percent.
